Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

Apple weds high-res 4K visuals into its sleek 5mm thin 21.5" iMac with Retina 4K Display. With a 4096 x 2304 native resolution, this iMac provides 9.4 million pixels, which is 4.5 times more than the Full HD 1080p 21.5" iMac. The Retina 4K display also features a wider color gamut. Using a P3-based color gamut, the Retina 4K display provides a 25% larger color space than standard sRGB displays. And with more available colors, the images will appear more vivid and reveal greater detail.

The iMac houses a quad-core 5th-gen Broadwell 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB of 1867 MHz LPDDR3 onboard RAM and integrated Intel HD Graphics 6200. For storage, the iMac has a 1TB 5400 rpm HDD.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi (backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n) for the speediest hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.0, as well as an SDXC card slot for extra storage, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, and a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

For ports, the iMac has dual Thunderbolt 2 ports (which also double as Mini DisplayPorts) and four USB 3.0 ports. You'll be able to connect with various compatible components. If you would rather go wireless with your peripherals, you can use Bluetooth 4.0 technology where compatible.

Retina 4K Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 4096 x 2304 resolution, this iMac features 9.4 million pixels, which allows for crisp, clear text and support for 4K photos and videos. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the Retina 4K display without having to crowd around it. The Retina 4K display also features a wider color gamut for true-to-life color. Moving beyond the typical sRGB display, this iMac features a P3 color gamut, achieved by shifting the Retina 4K display from standard white LEDs to advanced red-green phosphor LEDs. Now all three colors - red, green, and blue - are more equally represented and show off real-world color with more balance and precision.
5th-Gen Broadwell Quad-Core Intel Core Performance
The iMac houses a quad-core 5th-gen Broadwell Intel Core i5 processor. Its quad cores can reach a stock speed of 3.1 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 3.6 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 5th-gen Broadwell Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance. Combined with 8GB of 1867 MHz LPDDR3 onboard RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200
With integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200, the iMac delivers visual effects and 3D graphics that exhibit raw power. The iMac simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 4096 x 2304 pixels on an external display.
Thin Design
The iMac with Retina 4K display maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40 percent less volume than the 2011 iMac. Using an advanced welding method called friction-stir welding, Apple was able to join the front and the back of the iMac together directly.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.0
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the iMac takes desktop Wi‑Fi speeds over the top. When it's connected to an 802.11ac base station - including AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule (both sold separately) - you can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps. That's triple the previous 802.11n standard, which means you'll get up to three times faster Wi‑Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80 MHz-wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever. Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Thunderbolt 2
Expand the capabilities of your Mac. Connect high-performance peripherals. Transfer data at high speed. Even daisy-chain multiple devices. And the iMac with Retina 4K display has Thunderbolt 2, delivering twice the bandwidth - up to 20 Gbps - for fast data transfers. While the Thunderbolt 2 ports double as mini DisplayPorts, the iMac with Retina 4K display cannot be used as a standalone monitor like its predecessor. It can, however, be used simultaneously with an external display and can output up to a 3840 by 2160 resolution.
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four USB 3.0 ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.

    Apple iMac reviews

21.5" iMac with Retina 4K Display (Late 2015) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Apple iMac Brings Tears? iMac 21.5 3.1 Intel Core I5 with Retina is SLOW with standard SATA disk! Sit and watch the spinning color wheel. Buyers rightfully assumed that a newer computer would be improved. I expected dazzling speed. However, our 2008 iMac seems at least as fast. I almost cried. The Keyboard did not include a number keypad (critical item.) Now I have an old IBM keyboard attached. Otherwise, the computer is wonderful. It looks great. Retina display is fantastic. No one will settle for regular resolutions once they see it. All is terrific except the old technology on the hard disk and the useless keyboard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have NO BUYERS REMORSE! Opening the box is a joy. Apple has made that process a treat and shows how much attention has gone into the design of everything. OK.... WOW. The color and details are awesome. I like that the 21.5 iMac Retina display is a great fit for me. I think a larger iMac would mean looking all around to see what's in front of me. The 3.3 GHz Intel Core i5 is quick and the 8 GB of Ram is sweet. A word of warning from my experience. Turn on the computer and let it help you get going and follow the process but... don't migrate from an old OS (at least not right away.) That migration sets your new iMac to act like your old computer with all it's bad habits. If you want your old photos you can import them separately. Same with programs especially if you purchased them from Apple since they are in the cloud and you can download them all. Getting to set things up is going to take hours with up dates etc. Don't rush. I have absolutely NO buyers remorse. I love this iMac.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get the 4k! We've been looking for an iMac for a while, and finally decided to get one when the 4K was introduced. I think its worth the extra $$$ for the 4K - I saw them side-by-side, and you can tell the subtle difference - pictures and movies are just a bit sharper. The one thing that I might have done differently is get the fushion HD. I read reviews about getting it but ignored it. My wife does a lot on photos and she has found that this model is a bit slow when there are too many photos. Consider getting the fushion HD!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Computer! This is a great computer! It is super fast and easy to navigate. I took the plunge and transitioned from a PC to a Mac. I am very happy that I did. The 4K display is stunning. Some reviews complain about the speed of this computer. I have found the speed to be more than sufficient. I had never heard of, or purchased anything from B&H Photo. I was hesitant at first but decided that I could not pass up this wonderful deal. I am so happy with this purchase. The customer service at B&H is wonderful. My iMac arrived quickly and well packaged. Thank you B&H Photo!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Picture I bought this computer to replace my late 2009 model of the same size and performance level. I am very pleased with it so far. This is slimmer and lighter than my old one, which failed to power on, and was found to be unrepairable by my local Apple-certified repair center. The picture you get is so clear and sharp! It powers up quickly compared to all my old pc's. I had my old unit backed up to my Apple Airport, but have not restored those items to this one yet, pending the possible non-Apple-authorized repair of the old one. It is so easy to retrieve that information when you first set up the new one, as it shows you the backup on Airport once you establish your wireless connection. The new, thinner mouse and keyboard are battery-less, thanks to a recharging cable that connects them to the iMac via a usb port for charging. So far I have used them for two weeks and have not charged either of them. I already had an external cd/dvd/blu-ray drive, so the lack of an internal one is no problem. The only (small) shortcoming is a somewhat muffled sound as compared to the old one, but I guess the thinness comes at a price. I think the headphone jack could be used to connect to external speakers, but I really do not feel the need to do so. I did opt for the extended warranty because I fear the price of even a small repair could be high due to the compactness of all those internal workings and the inability to open it up as I did with my old pc tower designs and fix it myself. Them days is gone forever!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great machine, If you are in the market, Treat Yourself Now I know why Apple devices are spoken of so highly. I'm very happy with the iMac. I like the ability to sync other Apple devices at my control. The programs included are excellent and the phone service for questions has been excellent. Additionally Apple offers free 1 hour workshops (with no maximum # of visits) at many of their stores for training and to help you become familiar with many of the included programs. The store trainers are also excellent - patient, knowledgeable, encouraging, and always seem to have the answer. My recommendation: buy one, you will like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great device for the money I ordered this iMac to replace a Mac mini which I was using to edit, index, and then burn photos to CD. I burn 400 to 500 cds a day with 4 burners operating simultaneously and the Mac mini used to get short on resources causing program freezes and crashes. This iMac hasn't even had a hiccup. And the display is beautiful.
