Desmond MRA-1 overview

  • 1Description

Helping to achieve exacting camera-to-subject distance, the Worm Drive Macro Rail from Desmond is a focusing stage offering fine-tuned control across a 2.2" / 55mm adjustment range. The rail is driven by a knob-controlled worm gear and index scales, in millimeters, are printed on both sides of the rail for consistency. Cameras can be mounted on top of the rail via the integrated 1/4"-20 screw, which uses a 1.8" / 45mm-diameter thumbwheel to secure cameras in place. The base is a 55mm-wide Arca-type dovetail plate, which also incorporates a 1/4"-20 socket, for versatile mounting options. Additionally, the rail features an all-metal construction for higher precision and greater durability.

    Desmond MRA-1 reviews

Worm Drive Macro Rail is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantasticv value at the price This product is well made and easy to use. I'm use it to accurately manually focus for macro photography. Definitely a bargain piece of kit given it is sturdy and well made and easily supports a Canon 1D size camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for the price I have been using this device for about a week, and I am quite impressed. The mechanism is well built and moves smoothly. Because the camera does not stay over the center of the tripod, you MUST securely attach this device to a very stable tripod. There is a small bit of lateral motion in the device itself, but I have not found it significant. My focus-stacking results are much improved over manually moving the subject or changing the camera focus between shots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, even better price! Venus Laowa 60mm 2X Macro lens, or 90mm Tamron f/2.8 Macro, Canon camera 5D Mk III, 5D sr, 7D Mk II body and this little gizmo make macro focusing really easy! You get it close, with this on the tripod between the tripod and the camera, and the adjustment knob lets you quickly dial in the exact focus. What's not to like? The 90mm Tamron Macro can be handheld, since it has image stabilization, but this rail becomes an absolute MUST for the 60mm; the focus point is so shallow, even at high f/ numbers. Great product, even better price!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from yes So far I am pleased with this considering the low price. It installs quickly and it gives me the extra length to get the close ups.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good rail for the price but not perfect I bought this rail because of the worm drive mechanism and the price was very good compared to similar rails. Overall, I like it. The three things I don't like about it are: 1. There is no grippy rub mat on the thumb screw base to keep it tightly secured to my camera. No matter how much I honkered down the large ring that tightens the screw to the camera, the camera could still easily be rotated around. It needs to have a piece of soft rubber or something glued to the support base to prevent that problem. 2. When I received the rail, one of the hex screws that connects the base to the worm drive mechanism was loose causing lots of lateral motion. I was able to easily tight it with a hex key wrench and that solved the problem. That should have been checked before the item left the factory. 3. There is a lot of play in the worm drive thumb screw, meaning that it works fine while you are turning it in one direction, but if you want to reverse directions, the screw is completely loose for about 1/8 turn before it engages the worm drive again. This really isn't a big deal, as the worm drive has enough friction to keep it from moving, but I'm not sure why the thumb knob has to work that way. Seems like it could have been made in a fashion that would not allow any play in it at all. Otherwise, it is a good rail that does what it is supposed to. I would recommend this macro rail for anyone on a budget who is looking for a single-direction macro rail. A worm drive rail is way better than the rack-and-pinion type rails, in my opinion.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Ok I was impressed with the smoothness of this focus rail and I like the scale. The unit I received was a little wobbly. I had to tighten the screws to the mounting plate from moving around. I will still use it but it's not that great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Been needing something like this for my Macro work Works as is should. Gives me another option for focus stacking and general close-up focusing with a 1:1 lens. Worth the purchase for sure.
