The Spreading Wings S1000+ Octocopter with Zenmuse Z15-A7, A2, Transmitter Batteries, and Case Kit put together by B&H features the essentials required to get you started as a Sony a7S or a7R aerial cinematographer.

It features the DJI A2 flight control system – a collection of hardware components that control mixing, regulate power, provide sensor data, and include a 2.4 GHz DR16 receiver. The flight control system features attitude and GPS attitude flight modes, offering the pilot varying degrees of autopilot intervention depending on skill level and preference. In GPS mode it is possible to hover in a fixed position, which is ideal for capturing static video shots. In attitude mode, the flight controller will use IMU data to keep the aircraft stable, but when hovering it may drift due to inertia or wind currents. The A2 also features return to home, Intelligent Orientation Control, and other features made possible thanks to computerized, GPU-based flight control. The built-in receiver is compatible with Futaba FASST series and DJI DESST series transmitters (radio controllers). Third-party receivers are also supported.

For stabilizing and moving the camera in flight, this bundle features the Zenmuse Z15-A7, a 3-axis gimbal specifically for the Sony a7S and a7R cameras. The airframe features a dampened gimbal mounting bracket with a low mounting position. Additionally, the landing gear can be raised, allowing an unobstructed 360° of visibility. For the moment the gimbal is calibrated exclusively for use with the Sony FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA lens.

The featured Futaba 14SGH is 14-Channel, 2.4 GHz Computer transmitter that can be programmed to control the S1000+ itself or the Z15 gimbal. The transmitter features 14-channels and supports receivers with the FASSTest, FASST, and S-FHSS protocols. The "H" in the model number indicates that the throttle gimbal is smooth rather than ratcheted, which is considered the preferred arrangement by many heli fliers.

Two 13,000mAh flight batteries are included and can power both the S1000+ and the Z15 gimbal at the same time. A watertight hard case is included to pack away the S1000+ and accessories in.

  • DJI Spreading Wings S1000+ Professional Octocopter
    Featuring a removable upper center board for easier installation of flight electronics as well as a redesigned power distribution system, the Spreading Wings S1000+ Professional Octocopter from DJI continues the legacy of the original S1000. The S1000+ is a collapsible, eight-propeller RC helicopter designed to carry a DSLR or similar-sized camera. With a 24-pound maximum takeoff weight, it is intended to serve as a camera platform, allowing professional videographers and photographers to add dynamic aerial shots to their productions. It is designed to work with either the A2 or WooKong-M flight control systems, which are available separately.

    For stabilizing and moving a camera in flight, the S1000 is compatible with any of the Zenmuse Z15 series gimbals. The airframe features a dampened gimbal mounting bracket with a low mounting position. Additionally, the landing gear can be raised, allowing an unobstructed 360° of visibility.

    The S1000 is designed to power 6S lithium-polymer batteries. It will support capacities between 10,000 and 20,000mAh, and requires a discharge rate of at least 15C. With a 15,000mAh battery and a take-off weight of 21 pounds, it is estimated to fly approximately 15 minutes.

    Note: Assembly is required and a flight control system is not included.

    What's New for the S1000+

    Removable Upper Center Board
    The upper center board can be removed for easier installation of the A2 or WooKong-M flight control system, an iOSD module, the Lightbridge Air Unit, and other electronic components
    Redesigned Power Distribution
    New for the S1000+, the power distribution layout has be redesigned to make it simpler and enhance safety. Gold-plated metal bearings with a special screw design secure the power cords, helping to ensure cables will not come loose during flight

    Performance

    Take-Off Weight and Flying Time
    Weighing approximately 9.7 pounds, the S1000+ is able to support a take-off weight of up to 24 pounds. This means it can handle camera payloads up to the approximate size of a Canon EOS 5D Mark III. With a 21 pound take-off weight and a 15,000mAh battery it features an estimated flying time of approximately 15 minutes
    Propulsion System
    At the end of each prop arm is a 40A electronic speed controller (ESC). When combined with its 4114 pro motor and high performance 1552 folding propellers, it is capable of a maximum thrust of 5.5 pounds

    Camera Mounting

    Low Gimbal Mounting Position
    The S1000+ supports all of DJI's Zenmuse Z15 series gimbals for camera stabilization and control. The frame keeps the gimbal low, using a specially designed bracket. Additionally, the landing gear retract in flight so that full camera panning is possible
    Damping Design
    The gimbal and battery are mounted on the same bracket, with dampers placed between the bracket and the frame. This is designed to significantly reduce high-frequency vibrations to help make shots clearer and sharper. The battery tray's position also makes it more stable and accessible for mounting and dismounting

    Airframe Design

    Foldable Propellers and Collapsible Frame
    All eight arms can be completely folded down and the 1552 folding propeller can be tucked away, minimizing the S1000+'s size for transportation. To fly, simply lift the frame arms up, lock them in place with the red clips, and power up the system
    Efficient V-Type Mixer
    The mixer in the S1000+ is designed to provide large amounts of propulsion while maintaining power efficiency. Acting in tandem with the flight control system, it will work to keep the aircraft stable and flying even after the loss of a rotor. Integrated into the center frame is a power distribution system using DJI's proprietary coaxial cable connector

    The mixer is designed to be easier to install or replace by eliminating the need for soldering. All frame arms as well as the retractable landing gear are made from carbon fiber, to help ensure a low weight profile and high structural stability
    Inclined Prop Arm
    Each prop arm features 8° inversion and a 3° inclination, making the aircraft more stable when rolling and pitching, and at the same time more flexible when rotating
    Sparkproof Plug
    The main power cord uses an AS150 sparkproof plug for positive and a XT150 plug for negative to prevent accidentally mixing up polarities, and preventing short circuits that could damage sensitive electronics
  • DJI A2 Flight Control System for Multi-Rotor Aircraft
    The A2 Flight Control System for Multi-Rotor Aircraft from DJI provides the autonomy that four, six, and eight rotor aircraft require for stable flight. The A2 breaks down into five main components: the MC (main controller) with CAN-Bus hub and receiver, IMU, GPS, PMU, and LED. The IMU, GPS, and PMU provides the MC with altitude, acceleration, location, orientation, and other data which gets combined with any pilot instructions and translated into motor response. The system supports Quad I, Quad X, Hex I, Hex V, Hex Y, Hex IY, Oct X, Oct I, and Oct V motor mixes. The included receiver is compatible with Futaba FASST series and DJI DESST series transmitters.

    A2 Flight Control System

      The A2 flight control system is comprised of the main controller, IMU, GPS, PMU, and Bluetooth LED indicator

      Main Controller
      The aircraft's equivalent of a CPU. The main controller takes pilot input and, factoring in data from the IMU, GPU, and other sources, instructs the ESCs at the motors. In addition, the A2 main controller incorporates a 2.4 GHz DR16 receiver which is compatible with Futaba FASST series and DJI DESST series transmitters (radio controllers). To connect peripherals, the main unit features a CAN-bus terminal with 12 output channels

      IMU
      The IMU, or inertial measurement unit, is the primary source of information used by the flight controller so that the aircraft can maintain a stable flying condition. It uses a combination of accelerometers and gyros to collect this data

      GPS
      The GPS allows the aircraft to keep track of where it is in two-dimensional flight. This enables various types of assisted flying not otherwise possible, such as keeping the aircraft in a fixed hover while shooting video. A high gain antenna mounts on the end of a stock installed on top of the frame

      PMU
      The power management unit (PMU) regulates power being fed to the flight controller and other components. It features voltage detection and alarming, and has an extendable CAN-bus port

      LED Bluetooth Indicator
      The LED-BTU-I module provides the USB and Bluetooth connectivity required so you can adjust various flight control parameters using a computer or mobile device. Bluetooth wireless communications can be extend using the 2.4G Bluetooth Datalink, which relays Bluetooth data over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for use with the iPad Ground Station, a waypoint-based autopilot mapping system
    Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC)
    On multi-rotor aircraft-- as with airplanes--pressing "forward" on the transmitter (radio controller) moves the nose forward. However, because multi-rotors are largely symmetrical, it can be easy to lose track of which way the nose is pointing, causing the controls to become counter-intuitive. To avoid this, IOC--when enabled using the assistant software--defines movement relative to the pilot so that, for example, pressing forward will always result in the aircraft moving forward from the pilot's perspective
    Point of Interest (POI)
    When the GPS signal is good, users can record the current position of the aircraft as a point of interest by a preset switch on the transmitter (radio controller). The aircraft can achieve a circling flight around the point of interest with the nose pointing at the POI in an area of 16.4 to 1,640' radius, when the roll command is given. This function is ideal for shooting of a fixed or stationary object, creating an aerial tracking shot
    Intelligent Landing Gear Function
    Once you enable the Intelligent Landing Gear function in the assistant software, the landing gear will default at the lower position when the aircraft is on the ground. The system will also lower the landing gear in an emergency, the event of motor failure, or on auto landing, to protect the aircraft and gimbal. You can lower or retract the landing gear using a switch when the aircraft's altitude is over 16.4' from the ground
    Return to Home Failsafe
    Assuming the GPS has been properly calibrated and enough satellites are available, the aircraft will automatically return to its home point in the event contact with the transmitter (radio controller) is ever lost

    It is also possible to assign a button using the assistant software that, when pressed, will cause the aircraft to automatically return to the home point
    One-Motor Fail Protection
    Available when the aircraft is in attitude or GPS attitude mode. In the event one motor fails the aircraft can maintain a stable flying condition, enough that it can safely be brought back home and landed

  • DJI Zenmuse Z15-A7 3-Axis Gimbal for Sony a7S / a7R
    The Zenmuse Z15-A7 3-Axis Gimbal for Sony a7S / a7R from DJI performs two key functions: keeping the camera level and providing stabilization, thus helping you transform a larger multi-rotor UAV, such as the S1000+ or S900, into a platform for professional aerial video and aerial photography. Featuring ±0.01° control angle accuracy, the Zenmuse Z15-A7supports three operation modes; two optimized for aerial video and photo use and one for FPV (first person view) applications. The gimbal is operated using a dedicated stick on your transmitter (hand-held radio controller), and the receiver must have at least four free channels that can be assigned to gimbal operation.

    Each version of the Z15 Gimbal is designed for a specific camera and lens combination. This version is for the Sony a7S / a7R with the Sony FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA lens. Additionally, it is specifically balanced for this precise setup. Additions to the camera or lens, such as filters, can increase the weight and alter the weight distribution potentially damaging the gimbal.

    Note: Installation may require soldering.
    Compatible Hardware
    The Z15 Gimbal requires a larger multi-rotor UAV aircraft, such as the S1000+ or S900, that has installed either the A2 or WooKong-M flight control system. Depending on the system, the Z15 Gimbal is installed in, additional separately available electronics and mounting hardware may be required. apart from the flight control system, the receiver must have at least four open channels, and the transmitter must be programmable to support gimbal operation
    3-Axis Rotation Control
    The control method is designed to be simple and intuitive: the gimbal-assigned transmitter stick has direct control over the relative rotation speed. The design incorporates a tail potentiometer to increase control, stability, and precision, and the internal slip rings avoid needlessly complicated wiring. Both the power and signal lines are integrated into the tubes of the gimbal, which provides unhindered control axes, allowing the gimbal to pan and tilt ±360° and roll ±40°
    Multiple Control Modes
    Orientation-locked Control Mode: Keeps the gimbal locked with the aircraft nose direction

    Non-Orientation-locked Control Mode: Gimbal point stays the same regardless of which way the nose is pointing

    Back to Mid-point Mode (FPV Mode): Centrally locks the gimbal in the direction of the nose. In this mode the leveling and stabilizing functionality of the gimbal is negated

    Integration of the IMU Module helps reduce the amount of wiring required for installation. Plus, the gimbal provides a specially designed and customized video output module

    Windows Assistant Software

    Camera Shutter Control Supported
    With a properly configured transmitter it is possible to trigger the camera's shutter release remotely at the ground-end thanks to the integrated shutter control module

  • Futaba 14SGH 14-Channel 2.4 GHz Computer Radio System
    The heli-optimized 14SGH 14-Channel 2.4 GHz Computer Radio System from Futaba is a transmitter (radio controller) that can be programmed to control a multitude of RC aircraft, including fixed-wind planes, helicopters and multi-rotors, and gilders. It can also be used with certain production equipment, such as video stabilizer gimbals, that have compatible receivers. The transmitter features 14-channels and supports receivers with the FASSTest, FASST, and S-FHSS protocols.     The programmable computer is able to store settings for up to 30 models internally, and this memory can be expanded using an SD or SDHC card up to 32GB in capacity. To access the menu to change settings or view data from the aircraft (where supported) there is a 1.8 x 3" back-lit LCD screen. The transmitter is configured for Mode 2. Mode two is the most common in the U.S., however users in other countries may be accustomed to a different Mode.
