Canon PRO-1000 Overview

Marked with the distinctive red line normally found on Canon's professional lenses, the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 offers large-format photo prints up to 17" wide in up to 2400 x 1200 dpi resolution. This professional photographic inkjet printer can print borderless at up to 17 x 22" as well as work with thick 27.6 mil fine art media.

The PRO-1000 features Canon's outstanding FINE printing technology with a large print head. This is leveraged with an 11-color LUCIA PRO pigment-based ink set and a Chroma Optimizer cartridge to create prints with fine detail and a wide, accurate color gamut. The Chroma Optimizer cartridge improves color consistency on coated papers and reduces the difference in ink droplet height to ensure a smooth ink layer and less metamerism.

Mobile Ready
Connectivity is a highlight of the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000, with USB 2.0, Ethernet, and built-in Wi-Fi options available. Wireless printing furthers the printer's capabilities by adding compatibility with Canon's PRINT App, PIXMA Cloud Link, and PictBridge.
The iOS/Android PRINT App allows users to wirelessly transfer images and files for print from a mobile device, as well as remotely monitor ink levels and printer status. PIXMA Cloud Link provides access to Google Cloud Print for printing documents directly from cloud-based servers.

As a wireless PictBridge enabled printer, the PRO-1000 lets you link a PictBridge compliant device such as a compatible digital camera or smartphone to the printer through wireless LAN, and print captured images directly without using a computer.

FINE Print Head
The imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 uses Canon's FINE printing technology with a 50% larger print head than in previous offerings. FINE (Full-Photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) works with 1,536 nozzles for each color to produce impressively detailed prints on a variety of fine-art papers with deep blacks and accurate quality colors.
Anti-Clogging
The FINE print head institutes a tubular ink delivery system. This generates faster print speeds and reduces the possibility of clogging. Additionally, ink ejection conditions are precisely checked with sensors, and if a clog is detected, another nozzle automatically provides backup, preventing wasted prints due to clogging and reducing the frequency of nozzle cleaning.
LUCIA PRO Inks
A set of 12 individual ink cartridges consists of 11 standard inks and a Chroma Optimizer cartridge that improves color consistency on coated papers and reduces the difference in ink droplet height to ensure a smooth ink layer and less metamerism. The 11 standard inks include four monochrome inks that reduce bronzing, increase black density, and expand dynamic range in the shadows for excellent grayscale prints.
Fast Image Processing Engine
Equipped with the L-COA PRO Image Processing Engine, the PRO-1000 can quickly and accurately determine printing paths and patterns in order to work as quickly and efficiently as possible. This enables bordered 17 x 22" photos to be created in just 4 minutes 10 seconds while a two-way vacuum feeder keeps media flat and quickly and accurately feeds the media.
Other Features
  • A 3.0" color LCD is available on the front of the unit for easily viewing settings and making adjustments
  • Minimum droplet size of 4pl for finely detailed imagery
  • 1GB of standard memory for handling large files with ease
  • Rated EPEAT Silver, ENERGY STAR qualified, and RoHS Directive Certified to guarantee efficient power consumption
  • Print Studio Pro v2.0 is plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom with 16-bit processing will help you easily send high quality large-format files to the printer for making vivid, detailed photographic prints
  • Media Configuration Tool enables customization of the media settings in both the driver and printer and can make adjustments such as print head height and vacuum strength
  • Accounting Manager will help users track use and cost of consumables such as ink and media in order to determine print costs, and it can manage a number of users in a multi-unit environment
  • Device Management Console can manage multiple PRO-1000 printer and monitor activity such as error messages and printer information

Canon PRO-1000 Reviews

Never going back

I have been printing on my Pro-1000 for over a year now and I am absolutely astounded at the quality of my prints! Never before have I had such quality and magnificence. All my customers tell me just how beautiful their prints are when delivered. I use fine Art paper and the clarity on each grade of paper from smooth to textured is very beautiful. In the near future, I will be buying another Pro series printer that will enable me to print even larger prints from the Roll paper.

It was simple to setup and I was printing in about 30 minutes. I would advise anyone that is wanting to print photos out to sell or just to hand out to family and friends this would be the printer to get.

Contemporary Technology Amazes me

What an improvement in technology this machine reveals, Especially compared to my Epson 3880, which I loved (and spent plenty of time making repairs for this or that). Others have complained about too much ink use by this machine, but my experience is that the ink use is pretty much normal for a machine of this scope. And worth it, for its level of performance and accuracy. My only concern is that my work is mostly black and white. Epson had more grades of black ink than Canon, but so far the black ink performance seems satisfactory.

Good unit but INK is overpriced.

The unit is great and prints are beautiful. However, replacement ink is 70% of the cost of the original printer. That is outrageous. If Canon wants people to use their printers, they need to come up with a more economical ink cartridge system. There needs to be a bulk ink option.

Rough start, but love it

I bought this printer to replace my Epson 3880, which was a fantastic machine before it died after 12 years. Estimated arrival for the Canon was December 14 but an email informed me that it would come on December 11, which was thrilling. Someone had to be home to sign for it so I spent the entire day at home. It didn't come. A new email said it would be arriving December 12, I had to be gone, so my wife sat home all day to sign for it and it did not arrive. She was not happy with me. New email said December 13, I sat at home all day, did not come. So I informed FedEx I would pick it up so I could get my life back; they called on the 14th (how about that) and it arrived. The documentation was not helpful when it came to setting up ICC profiles. Everything had a magenta cast, and was dark. After a few days of internet searches I finally found a blog that solved it. It was really quite simple when explained clearly. Once I figured it all out I was thrilled with the color and detail. I now love the machine!

Quality printer, hands down.

My old Epson 3800 finally died the death of the black ink switch. Knowing this was coming, I had been researching a replacement for months. Looking at the current offering of a 17 printer from Epson, I was unimpressed with reported flimsy plastic feed and output trays. More importantly, there were too many reports of paper feed issues to seriously consider another Epson. In contrast, the Canon won me over. The delivery was prompt and in excellent condition. Setup was straight forward and simply easy.Performing the head alignment and color calibration was easily performed. My first color calibration print that I use was simply perfect. The next day was spent building custom profiles for some of my special papers, loading those through the media installer. In the past weeks, I have printed normal workflow images that include vibrant fall color shots. Seriously, the output from this printer is stunning! Importantly, the printer build quality is solid. Seeing and feeling conveys this to be a truly professional printer. Paper feed is flawlessly spot-on and the vacuum feed assist is impressive. The machine operates so quietly that at times I have to look up to see that it's working. I am grateful for the months I spent researching a replacement, and for the truly solid professional printer I found in the Canon Pro 1000.

The Pro-1000 is the best purchase I have made for my photography business. No more relying on printing facilities for my work. With the 17 x 22 printing size, I am able to sell prints straight from the studio to my customers. The colors from this machine are excellent, brilliant and closely matching the colors set in Lightroom and Photoshop. I highly recommend this printer.

Retired my Epson P800 for a Canon IPF 1000

With no new printers to enter the market, I had to choose between the two older models: the Epson P900 and the Canon IPF 1000. My history is with the 3880, then moved to the P800. Even when printing twice weekly, I had problems with clogged ink nozzles, forcing me to waste ink during the cleaning process. The Canon IPF 1000 over the last six weeks has not clogged once. I also like buying a new print head without sending the printer in for repair. The negatives about the IPF 1000 are that it has old technology and does not come with a paper roller.

Because of its weight it will most likely be very expensive. It's packed very well but an overseas shipment might be rougher than domestic. Check with Canon for vendors closer to the delivery point.

Can I also use this printer to print text documents?
Asked by: Curtis
Yes, you can print text documents on normal bond or copy paper, though the ink is expensive enough that if you're going to be doing a lot of that, you'd be better off having a small dedicated document printer, and use this printer for only photos. A full ink set is over $700, it's not cheap to operate.

Epson offers light gray and light light gray inks in their p900. Does Canon offer the same levels of gray in the pro-1000? What is the "photo gray" ink position for? Is it the same shade or lighter than the "gray" ink position?

Both the Epson P900 and Canon Pro1000 have a matte black and photo black as well as 2 shades of grey. The 2 grey shades are very similar.
