Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. Overview

Offering a versatile wide-angle to portrait-length range, the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. is a fast standard zoom from Leica designed for full-frame L mount mirrorless cameras. The 18 elements in 15 groups lens construction incorporates four aspherical elements and 11 anomalous partial dispersion elements, which help to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range for notable image sharpness and clarity. The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture benefits working in a variety of lighting conditions and also offers greater control over focus position for working with shallow depth of field techniques. Designed for consistent performance at all focal lengths and focusing distances, the versatility this lens affords is well-suited to nearly any photographic application.

Complementing the imaging performance is an apt 3.5-stop effective Optical Image Stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. A silent and precise autofocus motor also benefits both stills and video capture, and utilizes an internal focusing mechanism to quicken overall performance. This focusing design also prevents the front 82mm filter ring from rotating during use to better enable the use of circular polarizing or graduated filters. Additionally, this lens features Leica's AquaDura hydrophobic coating on the front and rear elements, to guard against moisture and smudging, and a fully dust and water-sealed design to protect the lens during use in inclement environments.

Wide-angle to portrait-length 24-90mm L mount zoom is designed for use on full-frame mirrorless cameras, and can also be used on APS-C-sized models where it will provide a 36-135mm equivalent focal length range.
The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture is ideal for working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over focus position for selective focus applications.
Four aspherical elements and 11 anomalous partial dispersion glass elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range and increase image sharpness and clarity.
A multiple-axis Optical Image Stabilization system compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting with slower shutter speeds.
A stepping motor with linear positioning offers smooth, silent, and precise autofocus performance for focusing as closely as 11.8" at the 24mm focal length position, or as closely as 17.7" at the 90mm focal length position. Only a single lightweight element is moved during focusing for quickened speeds.
The water-repellent AquaDura coating has been applied to the front and rear optical surfaces to protect against moisture and other elements.
Weather-sealed design protects against dust and moisture to benefit working in trying shooting conditions.
Internal focusing design prevents the front filter ring from rotating during operation to better enable working with circular polarizers, graduated ND filter, or other types of filters dependent on a specific orientation.

90MM IS WORTH THE DIFFERENCE IN COST OVER 70MM.

PURCHASING A LEICA BUNDLE I STARTED WITH THE 24-70MM F:2.8 ASPH. MADE IN JAPAN. TAKING MANY PICTURES I FOUND THIS LENS NOT TO BE AN EQUAL IN IMAGE QUALITY TO MY LEICA APO 90-280MM. SOLD MY 24-70 AND PURCHASED 24-90 FROM B&H. THIS 24-90 EQUALS MY 90-280 IMAGE QUALITY. JUST FINISHED A HOSPITAL COMMERCIAL JOB . 90% OF PICTURES TAKEN AT 90MM. THIS 24-90MM ASPH IS WELL WORTH THE ADDED INVESTMENT. ONE GETS WHAT THEY PAY FOR!

Best zoom lens

Big, heavy, and utterly gorgeous

I never thought I'd have this lens, though I'd seen so much written about it. But by strategically selling some M lenses and gritting my teeth, I managed to buy it. There's a certain grim irony to this, in that I'd gone to an M10 with M lenses precisely to get rid of the bulk and weight of my former Canon 1Dx and its monster lenses. Now I'm walking around with this behemoth mounted to my (also new) SL2-S, and I must say the size and weight limitations simply melt away into irrelevance when I see what this thing can do. To be clear; I have not used any native SL primes on this SL2-S or its predecessor SL, so I can't make a judgement as to whether those who say as good as a prime at every focal length are correct, or deluded. I merely know that the quality of the lens is stunning to me; and it redeems what I'd thought of as an inadequate AF system in the SL2-S. That body in combination with this lens is quick and sharp and fun to work with. One significant aspect of a 'standard' zoom of this kind is that it obviates frequent lens changes; I've noticed that the SLs tend to get dust on their sensor at the least provocation, so the fewer lens changes I can get away with, the happier I am. The design philosophy is, of course, Leica's and thus potentially eccentric, depending on your point of view. The outside surface of this lens is untroubled by anything so vulgar as a switch, or so prosaic as a depth-of-field scale, having just the (very smooth) zoom and focus rings. I possess a Sigma 105 mm macro lens which features an aperture ring, and I'd dearly love to have that on this lens too, as I find that mode of interacting with DoF very intuitive. But that is not how Leica works, so changing focus or IS mode requires an (admittedly quick) trip to the camera's menu system. All this, however, is merely a matter of habituation. Aside from the weight, it has to be mentioned that this is not a good lens for discrete 'street shooting.' One might as well walk around with a shoulder-mounted 1970s Camcorder, trailed by a whole production crew, wearing a hat labeled PHOTOGRAPHER. But this is a minor quibble, as far as I'm concerned. Is it worth its price? As ever, a very subjective question; I thought long and hard about the L-mount alternatives, and about a handful of (non-Leica) primes, but kept coming back to the combination of flexibility and image quality. If I had all the money in the world, of course I'd outfit myself with array of Leica SL primes -- but it's not as though they weigh a great deal less, or take up a great deal less space. In short, in my view this lens is hardly, if at all, a compromise. It just does the business and does it supremely well. For me, that's worth the price and weight penalty; I'll be shooting it with pleasure long after I've forgotten the pecuniary sting.

I owned three other Leica cameras and prime lens and this is the first zoom Leica lens. I’m very impressed with the image it produces. Although it’s rather large and heavy I guess one has to make sacrifices to get the best images!

Great!

Beautiful Rendering

Love the rendering that this lens has. Handles well and has nice neutral colors. I like that is matches the other Leica lenses in 82mm size. My complaints are Price, Size and the lens exhibits some peripheral focus shift (mostly toward the outer zone of the image) and it is particularly noticeable as you approach 90mm. The variable aperture is not ideal and the depth of field throughout the range is compromised because of it. The overall rendering of the images however are very nice.
