Kirk NC-200-500 overview

  • 1Description

This Kirk Quick Release Lens Collar is a replacement collar for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens. It allows your lens to quickly mount and un-mount to an Arca-type compatible clamp. An easy-to-grip locking knob enables smooth rotation for changing your camera between portrait and landscape orientation when mounted to a tripod or monopod. The collar is machined from 6061 T6 aluminum and weighs 8.1 oz.

It is recommended to to use the optional LS-2 Lens Support in conjunction with this collar and the Nikon 200-500mm lens in order to decrease lens drop or play when the rotation knob is loosened for smoother, more precise movements and control.

    Kirk NC-200-500 reviews

Quick Release Lens Collar for Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK, not that much better. I originally got the Kirk lens plate for the Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 lens, and that worked very well on my gimbal head. Then I decided to try this full collar. It is a simpler solution, given that you don't need an additional plate. However, I didn't find it to be a significant improvement over the original Nikon foot and Kirk plate, at least not a $ improvement. It is not really lower, and not really sturdier. Although it seems to have the ability to open so that the lens can be removed from the cradle without unmounting the camera, it is not easy to do that because the hinge point extends a bit and runs into the lens when you try to open the clamp wide enough to remove the lens.Overall, it just wasn't worth the price to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Improvement Over Nikon's When I got my 200-500, checked its tripod collar for wiggle or anything that might transmit shutter vibration to the lens. While I couldn't find any, I did notice flex at the point where the collar attaches to the foot. In the field, I often carry large lenses with body attached clamped to my tripod. Due to the weight of this combination I felt the single 1/4-20 might break under some circumstances (I could be wrong about that). So it seemed like the Kirk replacement might be a good investment. I was pleased to find it has no flex. The foot is also longer so it makes a better handle to carry the lens. When I shoot without a tripod, I like to rest the foot in the palm of my left hand and the Kirk foot feels more comfortable due to its length. The Kirk replacement collar is well made, lightweight and sturdy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Two Parts Better I prefer this to the Nikon collar supplied because of it's Arca Swiss dovetail - it's one piece, lighter and sturdier. I also prefer that I can take it off while the camera is attached. I don't like the fact that the screw is not captive and I have to be careful (otherwise 5 stars). I also feel the price is high, but Im glad Kirk went to the effort to supply this clearly superior product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very stiff and not smooth I have a number of Kirk products which are great, however, this collar is not one of them. Most importantly it does not turn smoothly or easily, even when loosened and actually, as it rotates, it abrades small amounts of brass from the screws which protrude from the lens to fit in the collars groove. I've taken it on and off multiple times to ensure that this is not "user error" to no avail. And this is not exactly a complicated piece of equipment - there aren't may ways to fit this on. Secondly, and this is a rather minor point because once the collar is on and working I wouldn't take it off very often, the locking screw is not captive. So once you take the collar off you have the collar and the screw. I'd prefer a captive screw so that you don't have to fiddle with a loose screw after removal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great! While the Tripod foot that comes with the 200-500 is better than what is on other lenses, it is not quick release. Also the Kirk is beefier. Over all, it was worth buying the collar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As Expected Simple, sturdy, fits perfectly, similarly priced to the RRS piece if they made one but they don't. Eagerly awaiting the stabilizer accessory which is on back order. The Nikon foot is fine but not Arca Swiss comparable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well built, more useful replacement I purchased this product to save the original lens foot, and expect better usability. Firstly, build quality of this foot is superb, it is durable and perfectly fits my Nikon 200-500. Second, it is very useful to use with monopod or tripod because this lens foot natively has Arca-Swiss mount comparing to Nikon’s original design. Also foot length is longer than the original one, it is better for me to handle the weight. I am happy to use this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed For that amount of money you'd expect something superb. Yeah, it feels sturdy but rotation of the ring is very harsh and you feel how metal scratches against metal. If i knew i would go for the chinees substitute with is 5 times cheaper. Waste of money
