Like all camera that are new to you, there is a period of learning all its capabilities. I am still on that journey but have been impressed. I wanted a point and shoot that will generate RAW files that I can processes in Lightroom. Took it on a hike in the Flagstaff, AZ area and found it easy to use, versatile, captured quality images and could be carried in my pocket. That was everything I was looking for. The documentation is excellent and there is a wealth of YouTube video to offer additional help. I do not shoot video so I cannot comment on that aspect, regular photography was great. I think this is the beginning of a wonderful relationship.

A compact point and shoot that's close to a DSLR

I was looking for a compact camera with a lot of DSLR type features and control. I like the eye level view finder and fast lens of this camera. I bought this camera because I wanted a better compact camera than my Canon SX210 IS. There is no comparison. It is easier to hold because it has a better grip. It has better image quality and auto focus. It actually compares more closely to my Nikon D7100 than the SX210. I love my the D7100 but I wanted a second smaller camera when I don't want to carry a heavy DSLR. The G5X won't replace the D7100 but I'm very satisfied with the G5X as a light weight compact 2nd camera. It's a little big to fit in a pocket but I have been able to slip it into a pocket most of the time.

well constructed; good photos; easy to use. a little heavy and slightly bulky for fast use travel camera, but if you get the right size belt pouch, which is very difficult to find, believe it or not, it is then easy to withdraw camera from pouch and replace quickly. i primarily bought the camera for the viewfinder and larger sensor.

Great Pocket Camera packed with Features!

So far, I am really enjoying this camera. I have been shooting Canon DSLRs and a Canon RP mirrorless for several years, and wanted something smaller as an easy take along camera I could fit in my purse. However, I didn't want to give up all the features I was used to with my other cameras. Some of the things I was looking for were: viewfinder (screens are hard to see in bright sunlight), shooting RAW (to make editing more fulfilling), 1 inch sensor (not as big as APS-C, but better than micro two-thirds), easy to read menus (I was already familiar with Canon), convenient buttons and dials (took a little learning curve, but easy to use), and small size, but not too small. This fits the bill with all of those features. Other additional bonuses were some special shooting modes, such as astrophotography (although I use manual with my other cameras, it'll be fun to try this more automatic mode for the Milky Way). It has a good solid feel, sturdy and easy to hold in my hand. It has a built in interval timer that I use for time lapse photography. The articulating screen is wonderful, and I prefer Canon's variable angles and tilts. Storage is an SD card, the same kind I use in my other cameras. Battery life has been decent. I still use my higher end cameras for most of my work, but the picture quality with this camera is pretty good. I wish the zoom would be longer (24-100 equivalent) but other than that, it has all I wanted and more!

Soft lens. Very soft.

Im still in testing mode but so far the images Im getting have lots of soft pictures. My last Canon P&S was a G16 and that gave me excellent results. I have seen reviews that mention sample variation so Ill keep at it. Not impressed to date. Possible return.

Inconsistent auto focus to the point it cannot be counted on. I have Canon DSLR's & also older Canon G series cameras, all have been great except for the G5 X. My one & only very regrettable purchase of a Canon product.

What case or bag do you use to carry the G5X? ...

What case or bag do you use to carry the G5X? I've been using a Lowepro Dashpoint 30 which is alright but a little short if I put a small thin neckstrap in the case as well.

One of the annoying aspects about this camera is how easily the controls are changed taking the camera out of a case. I have settled for a sort of fanny pack actually a pouch with a belt from Photo District News! The fabric is strong enough to safely hold the camera and the zippered opening large enough to put the camera in or take it out without any problem. I haven't seen any commercial holder anywhere near as good. They all are too tight or massively padded. Try finding an old lens cap [type for a view camera lens not snap-in] to protect front lens blades. Also, with this I can easily get the camera out quickly or eve on the run. This pouch also has a small pocket good to a spare battery, filter, etc. I think a camping store might be a place to come up with something like it.

does it have a viewfinder?
Asked by: Robert
Yes, it has a digital screen showing you what picture the camera will take. This was the primary reason that I bought this camera. Stand alone view finders on small cameras suffer from parallax. I have not seen this problem with this camera.

Does the macro work as well as the Canon G16?
Asked by: Miriam A.
My previous Canon was the G12, Miriam, so I can't make the exact comparison you've requested. For what it's worth, I'm very happy with the macro on the G5 X, and it sees very similar to what I experienced on the G12. I shoot almost exclusively in manual mode.

Is the G5 X dust proof?
Asked by: Cynthia S.
I've owned the G5X for almost a year now. While it is well built, I wouldn't say it's dust proof, especially because the lens moves in and out.

Does this camera have rear curtain flash sync with the built in flash or the external Canon flash EX270II, and what is the max sync speed with the built in flash and the above mentioned external flash ?
Asked by: Steve
The camera has a rear curtain flash. I don't have a EX270 II flash so I have no information on it. The max sync speed with the built in flash is 1/2000sec.

What is the guide number for the built in flash ?
Asked by: Steve
Do not know the exact guide number, but it is quite effective for some fill light when needed. I am a retired pro that sold all his gear. I love this little camera!
