Steinberg UR22 MKII overview

  • 1Description

The UR22mkII from Steinberg is a two-input, two-output USB 2.0 audio interface that features dual D-PRE microphone preamps coupled with 24-bit/192 kHz converters. With a dedicated high-impedance switch, a separate headphone jack, and phantom power supply, the unit is perfect for mobile musicians, touring DJs, or the small personal writing studio. Additionally, the unit can be switched to CC (Class Compliant) mode, allowing the interface to work with the iPad 2 or later. This feature requires Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit (iPad 2nd and 3rd generation) or Lighting to USB Camera Adapter (iPad 4th generation and iPad mini), and an external power supply with a micro-USB form factor (adapter and power supply not included). Combining the unit with an iOS audio application, such as Steinberg's Cubasis, provides an even more portable audio recording solution.

Audio input is available via two Neutrik XLR/TRS combo inputs, both with peak indicator LEDs, and global switchable +48V phantom power, enabling the use of condenser microphones. A Hi-Z switch on input two allows for direct recording of electric guitar or bass without the need of a DI box. Latency-free hardware monitoring is available and the Mix knob allows for blending the direct signal and the output of the host. Independent headphone and main output controls provide for adjusting the monitor and phones level individually. The device also functions as a MIDI interface, allowing for connection of external MIDI devices.

A Loopback function consolidates all playback tracks and input channels, routing the mix to the user's internet streaming software for easy live streaming of performances to the internet. When the function is active, incoming audio signals from a microphone, guitar, or line source will be merged to the playback signal from Cubase or other DAWs inside the computer. The merged signal will then be sent back to the computer for streaming.

The interface is compatible with all major audio editing, mastering, and music production software that support ASIO, Core Audio, or WDM standards. This unit comes with a copy of Cubase AI DAW software. Based on the same core technologies as the full Cubase DAW, the AI version offers an intuitive feature set for composing, recording, editing, and mixing. Also included is Cubasis LE, a streamlined version of Steinberg's popular iOS music production app, offering professional music production on your iPad. Housed in an all-metal chassis with two TRS outputs, stable drivers, and USB connectivity, the interface provides a comprehensive feature set in a professional yet affordable device.

    Steinberg UR22 MKII reviews

UR22mkII - USB 2.0 Audio Interface with Dual Microphone Preamps is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Big problems with MacBook Pro I was very excited to get my UR22mkII only to find that it locks up every 5min or so and you have to either set the audio device to the internal or the thunderbolt monitor and then back to the UR22mkII to get it to work again. Also unplugging the usb and then plugging it back in works too, then it works for another 5min and then locks up again. Works fine on a windows PC with no issues. It's been months now and still no update to fix this. I wish I could return it but its been months. So much for steinberg support, and this was the newer version too. If you have a Mac with OS10.11.3 beware, this will not work and there is no sign that they are working on fixing the problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good interface for budget home studio This box is an upgrade from my presonnus audio box, I hate dealing with steinberg for anything because of poor customer service, needless to say I was shocked when I got this interface to work within 2 minutes of hooking it up, no hoops to jump through, no lengthy registration process, just plug n go. My system is a amd 8320 octocore processor/32 gb ddr3 1600, 2tb 7200rpm hdd, and stock amd r9 video card.i have everything hooked up to a pair job lsr305s.I use ableton live 9.5 and komplete 10, the box works great at 24/96000, eats up some extra cpu once you crank the resolution to 24/192,000, but that is to be expected I guess. Over all its a good buy, and it sounds better than any presonnus, or focusrite box I've tried.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Little Kit This little box is pretty great. I use it in my small home setup and it does the job nicely. Latency is great and the preamps are clean and clear at normal levels. I really like that it has MIDI I/O because I use it with an electric piano and don't have to burn another USB slot. This thing is built like a tank too...I would have no problem taking it on the road. The only thing I've run into so far that I'm not thrilled with is how noisy the preamps get at higher levels. It's not really noticeable at normal microphone levels, but if you need a lot of clean gain...this will not cut it. Really though, this is a cheap 2-channel all-in-one box; you can't expect to get studio-grade preamps built in. You can still make some great sounds with this little guy though. I was between this and the Focusrite, and went with this because of the possibility to use it with an iPad if I ever wanted to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, intuitive While most of what I use this for is voiceover, it has everything you want in a simple interface.Good support from the manufacturer. Very happy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Serious Driver Issues on Windows 10 Experiencing the same major driver issues on Windows as many others. Windows reports "Problem w Unrecognized USB Device installed" with the Steinberg/Yamaha required driver. Have tried both multiple uninstall/reinstalls of the current and beta drivers with same results. The UR22mII quickly loses connection to both Windows and Premiere CC after the driver reinstall process. PIA ! A web search reveals longstanding driver issues with this device and Windows that Steinberg is failing to address. Apparently the "Beta" driver that was supposed to address this and go out of Beta status by now is still in Beta probably because it doesn't work - Windows still reports it as an Unrecognized USB device with both the latest Windows and beta driver. A real mess and time waster.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recording on iPad When I discovered my Focusrite was not compatible with my iPad, I looked for another solution. I subsequently learned about Steinberg converters from watching Pete John's YouTube channel. He showed a UR-12 in one of his videos so I decided to follow his lead. I needed two input channels to connect my Roland so I purchased the UR-22. It has performed flawlessly. For the price point it is a fantastic buy considering its quality construction. I'm now considering a UR-44 for the additional routing advantages.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from QUIET Im using the UR22 as an interface with my laptop using Cubase Elements 9.5. My setup is ultra simple. A Yamaha MOX6 and tons of plug ins. You may have heard that the UR22 monitors in mono which is true. A bit of getting used to. But then on playback oh my...flawless. This thing is 24 bit 192k and it sounds it. This unit defines bang for the buck. A gem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Correction of Negative Review Due to Bad Driver Error After many further driver replacements and tweaking of settings, I found the problem which we thought was a bad driver was corrected by replacing the USB cable that came with the unit. Now the UR22mkII is working for 2 days without problem. So appears to be a bad Steinberg USB Cable.
