Reikan FoCal Hard Target Reviews

Adhesive Problems

The target is good quality. The adhesive pads supplied are for permanent mounting and cannot be removed without damaging paint. Reikan should either give a warning or supply a removable adhesive.

Makes calibration easier

This made my lens calibration easier than downloading a paper copy of the target. This made my lens calibration much easier (thanks to larger size) and provided rigid target.

Can’t do what it claims

You can’t use a D-5 ii with a canon 24-70 Lense. As the picture on there box shows with focus control. It will not balance no matter what you do. I email support with no help just a run around. It’s hard to swallow the issue when your complete set up is in their picture?

Warped But Usable

I got two of these. They both were warped/bowed in by 3mm (1/8 inch). I contacted Reican and here is what they said about them: The warping is not what we expect (the materials used should be very stable and provide a flat surface). Having said that 3mm difference between the center and edge of target shouldn't be an issue. Two reasons it will work, firstly Focal analyses a very small section of the target. It is just the area directly around the focus point that forms part of the area used for analysis. If you look when FoCal is running the calibration or the PDF reports, the image crop area shown is the area FoCal analyses. The small area used alone is enough to discount slight warping but there's another reason as well.  FoCal is generally concerned with what will happen in the real world when using the camera. The camera and lens together are not so precise as to show a 3mm difference in focus depth. You would need an incredibly shallow depth of field in order to see a difference of 3mm. I do think though even with a deformation between edge and middle of 3mm that's not really a factor because the area being analysed is very much just the center area or area directly around the focus point. I compared the quality of the image on the FoCal Target to those I had printed out on an inkjet printer on matt paper. Personally I think just printing these out on an inkjet with matt paper is just as good.

Destroys walls

The double-sided adhesive squares that ship with this, intended for mounting it on a wall, should under no circumstances be used. Upon removal they stripped the paint off my wall. They are using an adhesive compound that is *not* intended for removal, and cannot be dissolved using common household solvents. It's baffling that they would ship something so clearly ill-suited for its intended use.

Need this for long lenses

I ordered this in addition to the FoCal Pro. That system needs ultra consistency and this flat, rigid, non reflective target makes that easier to achieve. I think it's well worth it even if somewhat overpriced for what it is. I used the included small target for most testing but this large target came in very handy sometimes when you are testing at a longer distance.
