Drobo DR-B810N-5A21 Overview

  • 1Description

Enhanced read and write features found on the B810n 8-Bay NAS Enclosure from Drobo provide rapid data transfers to and from multiple users. The data tiering feature nearly eliminates the delay between multiple read and write processes when used with solid state drives, while the hot data cache feature prefetches data during the read process to predict what data will be read next to enhance read speeds. Combine the enhanced data transfer rates with dual Ethernet failover ports and you have a comprehensive, network-attached storage solution. When used in concert, the bonded Gigabit Ethernet ports provide nearly double the performance that would be achieved with a single port, and they can also be used separately to connect the Drobo to two different networks.

With the Drobo B810n, you can share files across platforms, as it supports computers running Mac, including macOS High Sierra, as well as Windows and Linux. You can even use the Drobo DR feature to create offsite data backups to ensure your data is safe in the event of system failure, theft, natural disaster, etc. For added peace of mind, Drobo has included a built-in battery designed to power the internal RAM, keeping directory structures safe until the power returns.

Once the Drobo B810n is set up, you can choose from a large catologue of DroboApps. These apps help to increase the functionality of this NAS storage device with features such as cloud backup services, streaming music and video apps, and much more.

General Features

BeyondRAID Technology
To expand the storage capacity of an array, BeyondRAID enables additional disk drives to beinserted into empty drive bays. These new drives are automatically and transparently configured for use in the array without user intervention. However, if all drive bays are occupied, simply replace the smallest capacity drive with a higher capacity one and BeyondRAID will do the rest. Unlike traditional RAID arrays, the BeyondRAID technology in Drobo enables different drive capacities to work in the same unit. The B810n supports up to 64TB of storage.

  • Thin Provisioning
  • Instant Expansion
  • Mixed Drive Size Utilization
  • Automatic Protection Levels
  • Single or Dual Disk Redundancy
  • Virtual Hot Spare
  • Data Aware
  • Drive Re-ordering
Hybrid Storage & Tiering
The Drobo B810n moves beyond manually tuning an array for applications that have different storage requirements. Its ability to automatically tier frequently used transactional data from stored data that's seldom used enables businesses to consolidate storage resources and share that storage across all connected clients and their applications.

When using the hybrid storage option, Drobo's Data Aware Tiering leverages high-capacity hard drives (HDDs) for bulk storage and high-performance solid state drives (SSDs) for transfer acceleration. The result is fast redundant storage with a fast read cache for an application-optimized solution that requires no manual tuning.
Optimized for Business
Similar to business applications, Drobo is ideal for building a highly scalable networked storage system or fast backup target.
Designed for Hosting and Delivering Large Video Files
This 2nd generation 8-Bay Drobo can be used with a variety of security surveillance applications as well as hosting large amounts of video contained in a library. It is based on a quad-core Marvell processor with 2GB of RAM and it uses a highly tuned Linux operating system giving it a five times performance boost over its already fast predecessor, the Drobo B800fs.
Drobo Dashboard
Drobo Dashboard is an administration tool to centrally manage all your Drobos. It displays the status of all of your Drobos as if they were right in front of you. In fact, it provides the same status lights and storage capacity usage gauge that are on the front panel of each of your Drobos. This allows you to easily check the health of all your disk drives. Plus, the dashboard handles all administration tasks simply and easily without you needing to become a storage expert.
Battery Backup Protects Your Data from Power Loss
Drobo protects your data from loss in the event of a sudden power outage. This protects directory structures, ensuring Drobo will remount on you computer. Drobo has a battery inside and RAM to keep structures from being lost. When there is a power outage, data is stored on internal flash-based nonvolatile storage. Your data is safe until power returns.

    Drobo DR-B810N-5A21 Reviews

    B810n 8-Bay NAS Enclosure is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from easy, stable but slow I doubt anyone is buying a drobo for speed or as primary storage. If so, don't. It works great as a backup that you can work off of if needed. Read speed is slightly over 100MB/s and read is around 80-90MB/s with 7200rpm drives. ssds are obviously faster.I have it setup with (8) 8TB drives (ST8000NM0055). No issues. I am annoyed that this drobo required the new version of drobo dashboard. the new version doesn't come with an iscsi initiator anymore. So I was forced to buy one for $ just to continue using my B800i drobo.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I can NOT recommend this device nor it's manufacturer This is my first negative review of a product, so I'm going to keep this short: This device failed within 2 weeks of receiving it. Drobo tech support got it working again, but a month later (after transferring 13 TB of data to it) it failed again. After 4 months of round and round with Drobo, 4 replacement units and countless phone calls, they finally convinced someone in their development team to VNC into my computer in order to terminal into the Drobo. My support log is 42 pages long, which is completely unacceptable. This was the most painful experience I've had with a manufacturer in my 25 years of business. Stay away from Drobo! I lost money, time and the trust of my staff because of Drobo. Thanks goodness for B&H's great customer support, because they took back the unit (albeit after a restocking fee).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Bad but not Great I bought this to replace my very aging Thecus N8200XXX. It's simple and straight forward and quite a bit faster than the Thecus it's replacing. I'm using the rack mounting bracket and the first thing that stands out is that the power switch is on the back and inaccessiblewhen the unit is mounted. As was already mentioned, it can run Plex and all kinds of neat apps, but it really shouldn't. The processor gets overwhelmed even scanning the media and then your NAS dissapears from the network. As long as you use it as a simple file server it does ok though.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Imporved but still only good for Backups... I purchased this to replace my Thecus N6850. BIG mistake. I knew I was in trouble, when Dashboard said it didn't support the 6TB drives after a reboot during setup. Another reboot corrected it. While the Drobo has it's pluses, speed is definitely not one. Great for Backups but not for everyday or media usage. CPU? Can you say low end of the spectrum. Now I understand why they don't give specifications. This supports apps, desired and one reason for purchasing. BUT the apps are useless, if the NAS is to slow to run them efficiently. Example. PLEX, you cannot stream a converted video not even on the local network without PLEX reporting the network is to slow. It's not the network but the Drobo. It's CPU is maxed and struggling to keep up. Bottom line, if you need a backup only device, this may be for you. If you need a reliable workhorse by a THECUS TopTower.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from $5,000 Paperweight I say $5,000 because obviously you have to purchase the HDDs separately, but what good are they without a working enclosure. Since we purchased this Drobo it has given us nothing but trouble. It will work for a few weeks, then stop letting us transfer anything to it. The solution (according to Drobo customer service)? To wipe the whole thing each time. Yeah, thats practical for a business to be wiping 96TB of data. What exactly are we supposed to do with that data? Well, we had to purchase ANOTHER $5k raid system just to hold the data so we could format the Drobo. Absurd. Anyways, stay away. And for those interested, we bought a Synology DS1817+ when we had to back up all this data and so far it has worked great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERY FAST!!!!!!!!! SUPER LIGHT-SPEED!!!!!!!!! THIS THING IS LIGHTING FAST!!! i don't know whats the deal with this guy and uploading uploading videos. i tried to upload large 10 gig videos to the drobo and it works perfectly fine and FAST. the thing with the problem the other dude has is that he has slow internet speed. he thinks that once you buy the drobe it is supposed to be fast as they say in their advertisements. the thing is its true, it is very fast but you need fast internet to begin with. its not the other way around where you buy drobo = fast internet out of nowhere. Its your ISP is providing you with slow internet. anyway the drobo is very fast ad good for managing my things. very easy to use software and all. i use these hdd for our company. Rated 5 out of 5 by from works ok, easy setup works fast enough on my small 10 user network to share large files. net uses unmanaged gb ethernet switch. expansion is easy just hot swap a drive and drobo does the rest. was able to insert old drives of different sizes to fill the bays, so very cost effective to start using it. no need to buy a bunch of new drives to make it work. will see how it works under full load but so far so good.
