This enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity allows for low latency gaming, streaming of 4K multimedia content, downloading of large files, and much more. In addition to the 802.11ac networking standard, this router also supports 802.11a/b/g/n network standards making it easy to connect nearly any Wi-Fi enabled device to your network.

On the outside of the RT-AC3100 you will find four adjustable antennas featuring AiRadar beamforming technology supporting a transmission distance of up to 5,400 square feet (500 m). With beamforming technology the wireless signal is beamed directly to the connected device for a more focused, more reliable connection. This ASUS router not only beams the signals to your devices, it has the ability to support more devices without slowing down thanks to MU-MIMO technology.

If a wired connection is what you desire, you can connect to any of the four Gigabit Ethernet ports. Dedicated link aggregation support provides bandwidth of up to 2 Gbps when a super fast Internet connection is required. Inside the RT-3100 you will find a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor along with 128MB flash memory and 512MB of RAM to ensure the router operates smoothly when being pushed to the max.

AiMesh Technology

The RT-AC3100 supports ASUS' own AiMesh technology to create a whole-home Wi-Fi system with enhanced performance. In testing, enhanced network speeds were achieved over long distances, even after the signal from an off-the-shelf multi-hub system was out of range. This means that with AiMesh, your network can cope with demanding tasks like 4K UHD streaming even at the remotest corners of your home or garden.

Ping time and variance are critical technical parameters that affect responsiveness in online gaming, and their values depend heavily on the route game packets take to and from their destination. is this AC3100 or AC88U? I know they sell AC88U in the U.S market with 8 x Gigabit LAN

AC3100 is a speed rating and this router and the 8 Port AC88U have almost exactly the same hardware and do have the same speed rating. If you look into the AC88U you will see that it is a 4 port router with an additional 4 port switch added in the same housing. Even if it was a true 8 port router, adding a unmanaged 8 port gigabit switch to the 4 port version will give you a a cooler running system with more ports and have added only about 100 microseconds (or 1/10 millisecond) in latency. In short paying more that $20 for the 8 port version is mere vanity.

Highly variable depending on wall materials interference, placement in the center of your home vs a corner in the basement, but it certainly could manage 4200 sqft in a decent wood based environments if the neighbors were not blasting the joint with their wifi signals.

I specifically want the AC88U for its 8 wired ports, but I don't see that listed. Does B&H not sell the AC88U?

In short if you buy a $16 unmanaged gigabit switch and add it to the four port router. you will not ever know the difference of 1/10 a millisecond. Explanation: If you get deep into the architecture of the 8 port AC88U (great router (I love my four port version for sale here) you will see the AC88U is a four port router with an extra four port switch in the same cabinet. Adding an outboard 4 or 8 port gigabit switch will give you the same results within at most 100 microseconds (not milliseconds, microseconds!) and you will also know which ports have that negligible advantage. You would need to have very specialized network speed testing gear to detect the difference or you could take the housing off and look at the .architecture. You will not be able to tell in gameplay or with a conventional speedtest. I have been using this exact model for multiple HD streaming and video file transfer work and have never had a problem, and the factory authorized merlin software (available for no extra charge) is the bomb if you want to nerd out with custom programming and VPN's ect.
