ASUS AC3100 overview

  • 1Description

When ultra fast Wi-Fi is a must, the RT-AC3100 Dual-Band Wireless-AC3100 Gigabit Router from ASUS doesn't disappoint. Supporting the enhanced 802.11ac networking standard and operating on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, this router supports a maximum wireless data throughput of up to 3167 Mbps. This enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity allows for low latency gaming, streaming of 4K multimedia content, downloading of large files, and much more. In addition to the 802.11ac networking standard, this router also supports 802.11a/b/g/n network standards making it easy to connect nearly any Wi-Fi enabled device to your network.

On the outside of the RT-AC3100 you will find four adjustable antennas featuring AiRadar beamforming technology supporting a transmission distance of up to 5,400 square feet (500 m). With beamforming technology the wireless signal is beamed directly to the connected device for a more focused, more reliable connection. This ASUS router not only beams the signals to your devices, it has the ability to support more devices without slowing down thanks to MU-MIMO technology.

If a wired connection is what you desire, you can connect to any of the four Gigabit Ethernet ports. Dedicated link aggregation support provides bandwidth of up to 2 Gbps when a super fast Internet connection is required. Inside the RT-3100 you will find a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor along with 128MB flash memory and 512MB of RAM to ensure the router operates smoothly when being pushed to the max.

AiMesh Technology
The RT-AC3100 supports ASUS' own AiMesh technology to create a whole-home Wi-Fi system with enhanced performance. In testing, enhanced network speeds were achieved over long distances, even after the signal from an off-the-shelf multi-hub system was out of range. This means that with AiMesh, your network can cope with demanding tasks like 4K UHD streaming even at the remotest corners of your home or garden.
NitroQAM Technology for a Seamless Experience
Whether you're gaming online in a heated competition or streaming a live event in 4K/UHD, lag and buffering are simply not an option. NitroQAM (1024-QAM) technology on the RT-AC3100 delivers a combined 3167 Mbps Wi-Fi speed, ensuring everyone on your network can enjoy smooth streaming and low-latency online gaming.
Free GPN Game Accelerator Inside
Ping time and variance are critical technical parameters that affect responsiveness in online gaming, and their values depend heavily on the route game packets take to and from their destination. The Gamers Private Network (GPN) powered by WTFast automatically performs route optimization, choosing the most efficient route for game packets, resulting in consistently-lower ping time and minimal packet loss. With RT-AC3100 this optimization is free, so users can enjoy the results on virtually every competitive multi-player online game - at no extra cost.

Please note, the RT-AC3100 owners get the basic WTFast solution free, without ads. The free version is limited to accelerating one device at a time, and includes WTFast technical support. Users can pay to upgrade to the premium version for simultaneous acceleration of multiple devices.
Adaptive QoS
Boost your gaming bandwidth with Adaptive QoS (Quality of Service), which allows you to easily prioritize gaming packets and activities. You can even assign full dedicated bandwidth while gaming under gamer solo mode, making RT-AC3100 the perfect ally for low latency gaming anywhere in your home.
Cross-Platform Compatibility
Network speed impacts every device you game with on every platform you game on. The ASUS RT-AC3100 delivers bandwidth and coverage for all your gaming devices, from consoles to PCs to mobile devices, and supports every operating system, including Windows, Mac OS and Linux.
Free Up PC System Resources During Gameplay
Networking is only half the equation when it comes to game performance. Anti-virus programs and 3rd party applications can consume valuable CPU and memory that could be reallocated to your game. With AiProtection on the RT-AC3100 you can confidently turn off these utilities while you game, ensuring every available drop of resource is spent enhancing your game.
Bandwidth for All
RT-AC3100 is able to support multiple high speed connections and even maintain multiple simultaneous Full HD 1080P streams. Beyond content consumption, the RT-AC3100 enables a smarter home, supporting IP cameras, thermostats and a variety of devices you don't even own yet.
Enhanced Coverage
With a four-transmit, four-receive (4T4R) antenna design, both Wi-Fi range and signal stability improve dramatically with the ability to reach distances up to 5,400 ft (500 m). AiRadar beamforming further focuses Wi-Fi signal on your devices, making your Wi-Fi faster, clearer and stronger.
Power Processor, Faster Transfers
The RT-AC3100 comes equipped with a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor bringing computational capability to the next level. USB data transfers enjoy up to over 100 MB/s speed and the router download/upload speed (WAN-LAN throughput) up to 1800 Mbps.
4X Capacity Wi-Fi with MU-MIMO Technology
MU-MIMO gives nearly every compatible device its own dedicated full-speed Wi-Fi connection, so that multiple devices can connect at the same time without slowing down the network. In fact, RT-AC3100 is able to connect to multiple MU-MIMO-compatible clients at each device's maximum speed simultaneously, unlike standard single-user MIMO where individual devices have to wait for sequential transmissions.
ASUS AiProtection
ASUS AiProtection powered by Trend Micro ensures your online experience is safe and secure. By combining automatic vulnerability detection, malicious site blocking and parental controls, AiProtection keeps everyone safe and sound.
Parental Controls
Advanced parental controls help you to prevent users from visiting inappropriate websites, for example keeping young children safe from viewing adult content. You can also restrict the times that each device or guest account can access the internet, by applying scheduled time limits.
Your Sharing Center
With built-in USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, you can connect USB-enabled devices, such as external storage drives, printers, or a 3G/4G dongle to your ASUS router and share them conveniently with other users via Wi-Fi. And with USB 3.0, you can enjoy up to 10X faster data transfer speeds.
Integrated Link Aggregation
The RT-AC3100 features Link Aggregation, which combines two teaming LAN ports (the 1st and 2nd port) into one superfast wired connection for up to 2 Gbps using two Gigabit Ethernet cables. With Link Aggregation enabled on your NAS, clients can unlock unprecedented transfer speeds.
The RT-AC3100 features the enhanced, intuitive ASUSWRT user interface, which gives you easy access to both the 3-step web-based installation process and a wealth of robust advanced options.

    ASUS AC3100 reviews

    RT-AC3100 Dual-Band Wireless-AC3100 Gigabit Router is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is NOT the RT-AC88U but Still an Outstanding Router I admit up front that my purchase of this router instead of the RT-AC88U was my own fault due to haste. Internet searches for the RT-AC88U turn up many AC3100 hits and a lot of the sellers confuse the two in their write ups. The only difference seems to be that the AC3100 has the basic 4 ports instead of the RT-AC88u's 8 and it doesn't claim the game accelerator feature. Not a big deal for me, and my old router was getting sketchier every day, so I did not bother trying to return. For only $20 more though, might as well go all in and get the RT-AC88U. All that said, the AC3100 performs flawlessly with easy set up, powerful web-based router management features, and great signal throughput. I'm getting about 30 - 40% (70 - 80 MBps or so) of my hard wired speeds (around 260 MBps) which is a good 400 - 600% improvement over my old router. Wireless speeds are impacted by many factors, including the device that is accessing the signal, and I can probably adjust what is turned on in the router setting to gain more. The improvement is so significant right now that I won't bother tweaking for awhile. Bottom line, excellent product with a rich feature set that I have yet to fully explore. The AC3100 should be a long term solution but for just $20 more, consider the RT-AC88U and the four extra ports for network drives and such.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast but nott the BAM! I was looking for I have it connected to my desktop so it's the same as all other routers. Everyone else in my family is wireless and are enjoying mildly faster speeds. I should have benchmarked from my wife's laptop before and after upgrade but I didn't. MIMO will be nice once I get the right devices in my house upgraded. These days it's not the router but the ISP's that are the bottleneck. The enhanced security is pretty cool. Upgrading from an N router would be substantial I would imagine. From another AC router there was very little difference.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performance is great I'm extremely satisfied with the performance of this router. Slow download speeds and dropped connections are a thing of the past (at least so far). The administration pages are easy and intuitive to use. The only negative is I occasionally have difficulty logging into the router. Haven't figured out why and it could be user error.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving it so far. Definitely getting better connectivity than my last Asus router, particularly on the 5G bands. No issues thus far, but I only bought this a month ago. So may update the review accordingly later on. Will try to update in about 6 months. Re: B&H; loving the service so far. Timely delivery and competitive prices.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Defective? I had an old failing netgear with wired variable speeds but wifi that ran roku from 40 feet without any delays at HD. I tried this Asus and found that the roku couldn't pick up netflix or Amazon from time to time and the quality drifted from Standard to HD. Oddly enough, even though I am on the 100MB/s program I did get readings of 75 MB/s download when 15 feet away. With this strong signal I figured that there was a set up issue. I contacted tech and tried changing the channels away from what my neighbors had...narrowed the bandwidth...tried smart off and on...updated the firmaware after resets. My readings and drops were worse at around 25-30MB/s. I reset and updated and hoped for the original download speeds but it remained low. I don't know what the problem is but after many hours of tweaking I'm done with this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great upgrade over aging Apple Network We upgraded to this router after having an Apple AirPort Network (Time Capsule (wireless-n) along with an AirPort Express to boost the signal in the front of the house). With the old network, we would get 30-40mbps (on a good day) in the front of the house (we pay for 60mbps). After upgrading to this router we get full wireless speeds in the front without the need of a range extender! We have a bunch of devices connected to the network (iPhones, iPads, a MacBook pro, Lifx smart lightbulbs, a Ring video doorbell, a smart tv and a Amazon Fire stick) and we used to have problems with audio and video cutting out on the Fire stick, slow internet and delayed notifications from the doorbell. After upgrading to this router, devices seem to stay connected and are more reliable than before. Some tips with this router: - This is the same exact router as the RT-AC88U, however it only has 4 ethernet ports instead of 8. If B&H starts to carry the 88U, I would definitely go for that model. Performance wise, you shouldn't see a difference. - Upgrade the firmware once you hook it up. I had a couple issues in the beginning but once I upgraded the firmware, everything worked a little better. - If you want to share a printer with Macs just by using this router, good luck! I couldn't get it to work by plugging it into the usb port on the back of the router. I ended up turning off the routing/wireless capabilities on the old Time Capsule (which basically turns it into a network switch) and plugged the printer to the back of that. As soon as I did that it worked! By doing this, you can also backup your Mac to the Time Capsule as you did before. Overall, this is a great router. After a month of owning it I'm glad I upgraded. Everything seems to be faster and more reliable than before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy setup & very flexible user interface Easy setup-great user interface with plenty of options to make changes as needed. Improved coverage & speeds over the Netgear router that this one replaced. Very happy so far...B & H prices are on par with Amazon but I prefer B & H due to excellent customer service & fast shipping. Thanks & keep up the great work!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Completely overrated I had hoped this would give me a range beyond 30 feet but nope. In addition to being worse than my old router in range, it sometimes just stops responding and I have to hard restart it. I could not possibly regret the purchase more.
