M-Audio MICRO DAC overview

  • 1Description

The Micro DAC from M-Audio is a USB digital-to-analog (DAC) converter with two outputs—one analog and one digital. Taking the form of a slim USB stick, the Micro DAC plugs right into your computer or laptop, and, once there, transforms your digital signal into audio of a higher quality than a typical headphone jack. With the Micro DAC, you plug your headphones into the port on the side; for high-impedance headphones, you can flip a gain switch to boost the analog signal, thereby driving the volume to higher levels. An optical output can transfer pure digital signal from the Micro DAC to other digital sources. The Micro DAC comes with a carrying pouch, a USB extension cable, and a coaxial digital cable.

    M-Audio MICRO DAC reviews

Micro DAC USB Digital to Analog Converter is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Much improved sound from my laptop This M-Audio Micro DAC gives fuller bass and enhanced highs. The sound is excellent and certainly beats the native sound card in a laptop. It is very slightly larger than a flash drive. An added benefit is if your sound card craps out, this device will still let you hear what's going on. But note that it provides only audio out and does not have a microphone input.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well, very nice construction I'm not bowlegged with excitement like other reviewers but will say this device does just what I wanted. Can't say it drastically improves the audio quality or volume from MacBook Pro. But it does eliminate the Mac's tendency to fade out 60-90 min. especially watching movies. Though the impedance switch seems to do little, it's nice to have. For sure, I can say the audio quality is excellent and just maybe the digital out will be useful too one day. By the way, the included extension is very useful. Rather than the converter's weight hanging from your USB port, the included male/female USB extension is long enough to rest the converter out of the way.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Impressed I am what you'd call a cheap audiophile. I want good sound, but I don't want to spend a lot. I bought this item when it was on sale, and it has worked great. I am using it on an inexpensive, medium grade headphone; the M_Audio DAC makes them sound a lot better. I even used it with a $13.00 pair of ear buds, at it seems that the worse your headphones are the bigger the improvement you can expect. I won't comment on whether or not it's worth the $100.00 B&H is asking, but if you can get it CHEAP it's worth it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Size and Great performance. This converter really surprised given the performance that it gives and the portability. Gives me the clarity and robustness I was lacking for my headphones.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Sierra compatible I was unable to get this to work on latest version of Sierra, Mac OS. Their website did not have a compatible driver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yeah - This is it! Purchased this through B&H when the item was marked down 75% (Happens a lot). Works awesomely on my desktop HP Windows PC (haven't hooked it up to my Windows laptops or MAC). I'm using Sony MDR-XB500 headphones with an impedance of 40 ohms. The sound difference is like regular TV to 4K. I've only tested listening to files converted by me to iTunes, and they sound fantastic. Just pure, clear audio - no embellishment, no artificial highs or lows. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bargain DAC when on sale I rarely listened to music from my PC as the quality of the on-board DAC was minimal. When the M-Audio when on sale I thought I would give it a try and I'm glad I did. The bass is tight and the mids are well defined. It'll only sound as good as the music files allow so don't judge it by playing your MP3 files. You'll need FLAC or similar in order to appreciate the difference.
