Opteka FF240 overview

  • 1Description

The FF-240 Gearless Follow Focus Rig with 15mm Rod Kit for DSLR Cameras from Opteka is a compact DSLR rig bundled with gearless follow focus. It is constructed from aluminum and ABS material and is designed to work with all DSLR cameras and prosumer camcorders. The bundled follow focus is adjustable for virtually any lens and has a gearless feature to minimize bulk and add a sleek look. A quick-release plate lets you easily switch the camera between tripod and handheld use.

The gearless design utilizes a special rubber ring to securely grasp the focus rings on a lens. This facilitates fast lens changes, eases operation, and allows for a more affordable follow focus. The focus knob is tilted towards the user allowing for single user operation. Designed to have only a single, direct point of contact, this eliminates play (deflection) found in geared systems. The focus knob can be adjusted horizontally to accept a wide range of lens sizes.

    Opteka FF240 reviews

Gearless Follow Focus Rig with 15mm Rod Kit for Digital SLR Cameras is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice bit of kit I have only had a little time to play around with it, but it seems well-built and it fits my Panasonic GH3 long lens perfectly. The rods are very long, though, probably much longer than needed for most lenses. This made it difficult to put the camera in a case with the rig on it. I swapped them out for shorter rods and now I can leave it set up on my camera with the lens so I can just grab and go.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Well, the 15mm rod system isn't bad... Had this thing for about 2 years now(not sure why it is rated as a new item at the moment)and the gearless system sounds like it's a good idea but it fails pretty hard. I tried it on every lens that I had with zoom rings and focus rings and it isn't accurate at all and only even affects the lens about 40% of the time and you have to be sure to make it really tight which often accidentally shifts your camera and makes it shoot at a wierd angle. I recently replaced it with the C1 from Neewer and it works literally about 100x better. I still use the rail system because that works well enough, it isn't exactly complicated or anything and I need a coin to tighten it to my camera and it gets difficult if I attatch it to a tripod or rig or anything like that but I don't tend to take it off so that isn't much of an issue. When I bought it, I got it for about $ bucks Canadian and I think that was even a bit steep since I only use the rail system and will probably replace them soon. For the price of this you could probably get a cheap camera cage with a built in rail system and just grab the Neewer C1 and you'll end up getting a lot more for your money and not having a follow focus that just sits there and slighly nudges the lens focus.
