SLR Magic SLRA50-1.33X Overview

The SLR Magic Anamorphot-50 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter allows you to expand your creative horizons, enabling you to capture footage with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio on your camera with a 16:9 sensor. This results in an image that out of the camera will look distorted, as if your subjects were stretched taller and thinner than normal. This is easily corrected in post with virtually any modern NLE, creating an image suitable for viewing on wide-screen.

The Anamorphot-50 features adjustable focus marked normal and near. The near adjustment allows you to focus on subjects closer than 6.5' away; setting the adapter to normal allows you to focus on subjects from 6.5' to infinity. It mounts to lenses with a non-rotating front and a front thread diameter of 62mm. Three included step-up rings allow you to mount the Anamorphot onto lenses with 58, 52, or 49mm front thread diameter. SLR Magic recommends that the Anamorphot-50 1.33x be used with lenses that have a front element that is physically no larger than 50mm in diameter.

A 16:9 sensor records an image with an aspect ratio of approximately 1.78:1, and if you want to convert that to a more cinematic widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 you could crop your image in post. However, this leads to a loss in resolution and image degradation. The Anamorphot 1.33x squeezes the image horizontally, which creates the classic tall / thin image that must be "de-squeezed" in post. The anamorphic process allows you to capture your image using your entire sensor, so there is no loss in resolution when compared with cropping your image.
The Anamorphot-50 1.33x screws onto your lens's front, providing the classic anamorphic effect. Once screwed onto your lens, you use the push/pull locking ring to align and lock the Anamorphot-50.
The Normal/Near adjustments ring allows you to fine-tune the focus of your lens for shooting subjects closer than 6.5'.
It features a 77mm filter thread so you can attach optional filters, diopters, or the SLR Magic Rangefinder Cine for improved focus functionality.

My first anamorphic solution. It allowed me a way to satisfy my curiosity about the format. I've used it to shoot to entire short films on my Black Magic Cinma Camera 2.5K, attached to vintage Nikon Still lenses. I've also attached it to my old Video 8 camera and Super 8 Camera to try the format in other formats

I am pairing this with the Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM with excellent results. The EF 24mm does not extend or rotate when focusing, making it an ideal choice for use with the 1.33x adapter. Used with my (yes, old school) BMCC I get a 40mm horizontal anamorphic field of view which is really very versatile. Also, the lens image stabilization is nice for handheld work. I did add a Smallrig lens support on rails, just for peace of mind, as the lens with adapter is fairly long and front heavy. It flares nicely if you want it to and sharpness and contrast, to me, seem more than adequate - even nice. When looking at options and seeing some of the wacky rigs folks work up to shoot anamorphic, this is really a much better solution.

I am really happy the I ordered the anamorphic-50 and not the 40. I have used it in conjunction with my 50mm lens and my 85mm lens which required a step-down ring, but no big deal. At f/5.6 and at f/8 the results are decently sharp and look good with a little work in post. Things are sharp enough, and my few photos I have shot with it have been good. I have to make a few more tweaks and I would love to get the cinema range finder and the diopters, but for some reason I struggle to find those attachments sold separately. I bought this lens adaptor as a relatively low cost way to shoot anamorphic for video and also anamorphic still photography. I do find the adaptor easy to hook on and fairly easy to use. I could definitely recommend this product to people who really research and understand its limitations, because there are definitely limitations. Beyond that the build quality feels pretty solid and I am not sure about the price point on this item, seems a little high, but I am still happy with my purchase. I will kick it up a star or star and half if it continues to perform well as I use it and also once I get my hands on the attachments I need, which will likely make shooting video with it easier. I do not mind the dual focus style for photos, but for video I am going to need another solution.

Wow! (Issues with some lenses)

This adapter isn't for everyone but I'm in love. At first I was a bit disappointed with how terribly soft and level of chromatic aberration in the image, but that was because I was trying to shoot way too wide open. When I stopped down to f/7 and higher the image started to look amazing. The bokeh even at f/7 was really pleasant. Using taking lenses that lack focusing hard stops may be an issue though because of the weigh of the adapter. My canon 50mm f/1.4 focus ring will just spin and spin and not able to push or pull the adapter, making focusing impossible. I bought the rangefinder adapter but it wasn't for me. This isn't just a pop and play adapter and takes way more time to get your shot, but I love the results.

Very good!

Hi I'm South Korea DOP KIM Chang-Gyun. I buy two anamorphot at B&H. My Canon 80D camera with Canon EF-S 24mm F2.8 STM lens(52mm filter size)=40mm Anamorphic lens and Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM lens(52mm filter size)=55mm Anamorphic lens and Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM lens(49mm filter size)=80mm Anamorphic lens All This lens can use auto focus mode but some time change NEAR-NOMAL. My short film shoot Canon EF-S 24mm lens(=40mm Anamorphic lens) only. https://youtu.be/Ig0j8RvDGyY Thank You! ^^

I like this lens adapter and how it works with my Panasonic G9 with Panasonic prime lenses. Expect to put some work into learning how to use it. I think there is a great deal of potential in anamorphic for what I do. Make sure you check for proper alignment of the adapter and taking lens each time you pull the camera out of the bag. This is an inexpensive way to get into anamorphic and find out if it works for your particular style.

Great Lens! Cinematic feel

I love the lens, have it mounted on some vintage glass on full frame and am kinda blown away by how fantastic the images turn out with this. Really feels like the next level and a great hack to instantly make your movie more cinematic or increase production value. I mostly got this for the wider fov and compression. Plus I've always been a huge fan of anamorphic. A couple things to note. Focusing is super easy, I was worried it'd be really difficult but for the most part you can focus through it like nothing. This was a concern of mine so figured I'd point that out. Now for the unfortunate... I watched dozens of reviews of this product, saw the blue flares, fell in love with the look of this adapter, so I go to b&h and buy this adapter.. when i look at the front i dont see any blue but instead green? So i try shining a light into the lens and to my surprise no blue flares... instead theres really subdued green flares... it's a shame because this was not indicated anywhere.. even the pictures on b&h show a blue lens coating. I kinda feel jipped.. I'm not yet sure if I'll return the adapter and look for the older copy. Other than the false marketing and disappointment in this new coating, the adapter is pretty amazing otherwise

will it work with a Sony a6400 + [SEL18135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS]?

Since the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens has a 55mm filter size, you will need a 55mm to 62mm step-up ring to mount the SLR Magic Anamorphic Adapter.

question

I got a Canon T2i (APS-C) and a Sigma 30mm prime and Canon 50mm prime. Will this work on any/or both of those two lenses?
Asked by: Danial K.
SLR Magic recommends that with the Anamorphot-50 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter that you use lenses in the 35-85mm focal length. So probably the 30mm will vignette and not be optimal.

Does the SLR anamorphic lens adapter fit on the rokinon cone lenses
Asked by: Thulani
No it will not. typically Rokinon Cine Lenses have 72-77mm filter threads and the SLRMagic Anamorphot is designed for lenses that are 62mm filter threads or less. attempting to use larger lenses will likely cause a vignette (a dark ring around your footage).

question

Hi there, in the Box is written 49 to 62mm Step-Down Ring - shouldnt it be Step-up ring? And What is the brand of this Rings?
Asked by: Vinicius Berger A.
The view taken as to rig nomenclature is that the adapter is stepping down to the taking lens. At this time, the manufacturer of the rings is assumed to be SLR magic.

Hi, does this work with the Sony fe 90mm, f2.8 ?
Asked by: Anonymous
It does not. For a full frame camera the focal length must be between 40-85mm. This lens is too telephoto. Your best option for a telephoto lens that is Full Frame E-mount is the SLR Magic Cine 75mm f/1.4 FE Lens for Sony E-Mount, B&H # SL7514FE. That lens is the proper focal length, has the proper outer diameter and filter thread for the Anamorphot adapter. https://bhpho.to/2EQPSXm

Will this work with the Rokinon 50mm T1.5 lens ?
Asked by: Gianfranco
The anamorphic adapter will work best with lenses that offer a threading of 62mm or less and a front element diameter of 50mm or less. You can work with a larger threading but it is not optimal. The Rokinon 50mm T1.5 lens offers a 77mm with a lens element diameter not that far off. A lot of these taking lenses have to be experimented with what work best.
