The Foundation 3.1+ from Pittsburgh Modular is a stand-alone, fully modular synthesizer modeled after the vintage modulars of the 70's and features no hardwired signal path or fixed-voice architecture to restrict creativity. The Foundation 3.1+ is an expandable version of the Foundation 3.1 analog modular synthesizer, which is housed in the larger Move [208] desktop case and includes a black plastic panel that can be easily trimmed as new modules are added to keep the case looking clean.

The instrument is comprised of 13 modules including a MIDI-to-CV Converter, two oscillators, an LFO, a multifunction toolbox, a mixer, a mixer/mult, a lopass gate, a multi-mode filter, two envelope generators, a dual VCA/mixer, and an output module with stereo headphone and dual-mono outputs. The case offers an integrated power supply and Eurorack bus system capable of powering up to 26 modules. The Foundation 3.1+ is compatible with all Eurorack-format modules and ships with 18x 1/8" / 3.5mm patch cables.

  • MIDI 3 - MIDI-to-CV Converter - Eurorack Module

    The MIDI 3 from Pittsburgh Modular is a 3rd generation MIDI-to-CV converter compatible with the Eurorack format and is designed to convert MIDI note messages into the analog control voltages used by modular and other analog synthesizers, allowing synthesizers to be controlled by a MIDI keyboard, sequencer or DAW. The MIDI 3 has a robust feature set including monophonic and duophonic MIDI response modes, assignable CC and dedicated velocity outputs. Additionally, the module offers a feature-rich clock source with tap tempo, MIDI and external gate-clock dividers, and multiple arpeggiator responses.

    The two CV outputs can be used to control the pitch of an oscillator, cutoff frequency of a filter, or any other voltage-controlled function. The two gate outputs can be used to trigger envelope generators or any module expecting a gate or clock source. The MIDI 3 is 6hp wide, 1.4" / 35mm deep, and uses 50mA of power. The module ships with a ribbon cable.

    Performance Modes
    • Monophonic: Monophonic mode works great when using a modular as a single-voice synthesizer patch. Channel 2 Gate and CV outputs mirror the outputs of Channel 1. Monophonic mode has several keyboard responses to choose from. Last-note priority, low-note priority, and high-note priority. Each response is available with and without gate retriggering
    • Duophonic: The MIDI 3 module uses the two sets of Gate and CV outputs to allow two notes to be played simultaneously. The first MIDI note is sent to Channel 1 Gate and CV outputs and the second is sent to Channel 2 Gate and CV outputs. Duophonic mode has three keyboard response modes to choose from. Unused channel and new-note priority, unused channel and low-note priority, and split-keyboard priority. Duophonic mode is perfect when working with a two-voice modular-synthesizer patch
    • Arpeggiator: The MIDI 3 module includes a robust arpeggiator mode with multiple mono and duophonic responses to choose from. Available responses are monophonic response as played, double-triggered monophonic response as played, random monophonic response, random monophonic with a random Channel-2 gate, and random duophonic response with dual random gates. The arpeggiator can be clocked using tap tempo, MIDI clock, or external gate
    Clock Modes
    • Internal Clock: The internal MIDI 3 clock utilizes the tap tempo button to modify the rate of the internal clock. The internal clock is used to clock the arpeggiator and is also output to the CLOCK jack
    • External MIDI Clock: The external MIDI clock responds to MIDI start/stop messages and MIDI tempo from an external MIDI clock source. The external MIDI clock is used to clock the arpeggiator and is also output to the CLOCK jack. In external MIDI-clock mode, the tap tempo button cycles through five available clock divisions
    • External Gate Clock: The external gate clock responds to gate signals patched into the CLOCK jack. The external gate clock is used to clock the arpeggiator. In external-gate clock mode, the tap tempo button cycles through six available clock divisions

    The Waveforms Oscillator from Pittsburgh Modular is a wide-range, high-quality complex voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that is designed to be the core of a modern, analog Eurorack modular synthesizer. The Waveforms module offers a full complement of standard waveforms including sine, triangle, saw, and pulse, as well as a sub-octave generator and a unique modulatable blade wave, which generates a saw wave one octave above the core frequency and creates a living, breathing, and evolving waveform that is still capable of tracking 1V per octave.

    The oscillator provides 5 octaves of 1V-per-octave tracking and a frequency range starting as low as 7 seconds per cycle, allowing it to double as an LFO. Additional features include oscillator reset for hard sync, attenuated linear or exponential FM input, pulse width, and a pulse-width CV input. LFO1 (top) offers a triangle-based low-frequency oscillator that utilizes Frequency and Shape controls to generate shifting waveforms. The Shape control varies the shape from a sawtooth (full left) to triangle (12 o'clock) to ramp (full right). The shape also adjusts the pulse width of the Pulse output.

  • Mixer - 4-Channel Mixer / Attenuator - Eurorack Module

    The Mixer from Pittsburgh Modular is a flexible, low-noise four-channel mixer and/or attenuator for audio and CV that can be used in several ways. Three of the four channels have an output that removes the channel from the mixer circuit and allows it to become a stand-alone attenuator. Each pot is wired with a logarithmic volume curve that is tuned for use with audio, but will function with CV as well.

    Patching the output of channel 1, 2, or 3 will remove it from the mixer circuit. Channel 4 cannot be removed from the mixer, but if channels 1 through 3 are being used as attenuators, then channel 4 is the only input remaining and can be used as a buffered attenuator. The Mixer module is 8hp wide, 0.8" / 20mm deep, and requires 20mA of power. The module ships with a ribbon cable.

  • Mix Mult - 3-Channel Mixer / 2 Passive Mults - Eurorack Module

    The Mix Mult from Pittsburgh Modular is a multi-function utility module that combines three functions into a single module, including a high-quality three-channel mixer and/or attenuator and two sets of passive multiples. The mixer/attenuator section functions as a flexible, low-noise three-channel mixer and/or attenuator for audio and CV. Patching into the output of channel 1 or 2 will remove that channel from the mixer circuit and turn the channel into an independent passive-signal attenuator. Channel 3 cannot be removed from the mixer circuit. However, if channel 1 and 2 are all being used as attenuators, channel 3 can be used as a buffered attenuator. The mixer knobs utilize a logarithmic volume curve that is tuned for use with audio, but it will work with CV as well.

    The bottom of the module contains two sets of passive mults or multiples. Patching a signal into one of the multiple jacks will split the signal to the remaining two jacks, allowing a single audio or CV signal to be used in two places at once. The Mix-Mult module is 8hp wide, 1.0" / 25mm deep, and requires 20mA of power. The module ships with a ribbon cable.

  • Lopass Gate (LPG) - Filter, VCA, Low-Pass Gate - Eurorack Module

    The Lopass Gate (LPG) from Pittsburgh Modular is a triple-mode module that combines three functions into a single module, including a VCA, low-pass filter, and low-pass gate. The voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) controls the volume of a sound, while the low-pass filter utilizes a Sallen-Key design, which is a classic 2-pole, 12 dB per octave filter that is used in the Korg MS-20 and MS-10 synthesizers to produce a warm and buttery sound. Resonance has been added to further push the filter into sonic mayhem and snarls when approaching self oscillation.


    The low-pass gate circuit combines the low-pass filter with the VCA to simulate the characteristics of natural instruments. Louder sounds have more harmonic content, while quieter sounds contain less harmonic content. The LPG utilizes a vactrol circuit offering a fast and tight attack with a slower decay, which lends itself to organic percussive sounds with a natural decay. The vactrol can be controlled by the "Ping" input, which reacts to any gate of square-wave signal. The Lopass Gate module is 8hp wide, 1.4" / 36.5mm deep, and requires 30mA of power. The module ships with a ribbon cable.

    LPG Controls
    • Frequency Control Knob: In filter mode, the frequency knob controls the center frequency of the filter. In VCA mode, the frequency knob controls the pass-through signal level. In low-pass gate mode, the frequency knob controls both the center frequency of the filter and the pass-through signal level
    • Resonance Control knob: In filter mode, the resonance knob controls the amount of resonance. In VCA mode and low-pass gate mode, the resonance knob is not active
    • Mode Switch: Switch between the 3 module modes. VCA position (up) enables VCA mode, LPG position (center) enables low-pass gate mode, and FILTER position (down) enables low-pass filter mode
    • Frequency CV Input Control Knob, CV Input, and Invert Switch: CV input controls. The CV input knob attenuates the incoming CV signal. Invert switch inverts the incoming CV signal

  • Filter - Classic Multi-Mode Analog Filter - Eurorack Module

    The Filter from Pittsburgh Modular is a classic voltage-controlled, analog, state-variable filter. The module offers a smooth and natural sound with several modes of operation, each with a unique sound and energy. The filter offers multiple responses simultaneously including low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and variable, which shifts between low-pass, notch, and high-pass.

    The variable topology was chosen as it offers something new and musically engaging at any turn of a knob or flip of a switch. The filter provides a warm, organic sweep through the full frequency range. The low-pass is gummy and relaxed, while the high-pass is clean and defined. Switching to oscillator mode (OSC) results in a howling beast of chunky distortion. The Filter module is 12hp wide, 1.4" / 35.0mm deep, and requires 31mA of power. The module ships with a ribbon cable.

    The Envelope from Pittsburgh Modular is a complex multi-stage envelope generator with a voltage-controllable attack and decay/release. Toggling the sustain switch allows the Envelope to function as either a 2-stage attack-decay envelope or a 3-stage attack-sustain-release envelope. The response for attack and decay/release is continually adjustable between logarithmic, linear, and exponential allowing for precision envelope shaping.

    This versatile module can perform as a voltage-controlled envelope generator, voltage-controlled slewing (portamento/glide), envelope follower, VCO and VC-LFO, VC pulse delay, and VC wave shaper. The Envelope module is 8hp wide, 1.4" / 35.0mm deep, and requires 35mA of power. The module ships with a ribbon cable.

    Envelope Controls
    • Linear Attack/ Non-Linear Attack Switch: Determines the response type of the attack portion of the envelope. Set to linear, the response is always linear. Set to non-linear, the response is assigned using the attack NON-LINEARITY/CV IN attenuator. Full left offers a logarithmic response, setting the knob to 12 o'clock provides a linear response, and turning the knob full right results in an exponential response.
    • Attack control Knob: Adjusts the attack time of the envelope.
    • Attack Non-Linearity / CV In Attenuverter: Multi-function attenuverter used to attenuvert incoming attack CV. Turning the knob left of 12 o'clock results in attenuated inverted CV. At 12 o'clock, the CV response is off. Turning the knob to the right of 12 o'clock results in attenuated CV.
    • Sustain On/Off Switch: Changes the envelope response. Set to off (left), the envelopes functions as an attack-decay envelope generator. Set to on (right), the envelope functions as an attack-sustain-release envelope generator.
    •  Linear Decay/Release / Non-Linear Decay/Release Switch: Determines the response type of the decay/release portion of the envelope. Set to linear, the response is always linear. Set to non-linear, the response is assigned using the decay/release NON-LINEARITY/CV IN attenuator. Full left offers a logarithmic response, setting the knob to 12 o'clock provides a linear response, and turning the knob full right results in an exponential response.
    • Decay/Release Control Knob: Adjusts the decay/release time of the envelope.

    The Outs from Pittsburgh Modular is a stereo headphone amplifier and line-output module offering dual independent level controls. The module offers stereo 1/8" / 3.5 mm inputs for left and right. The left input works with a mono input and will send the same signal to both left and right headphone- and line-level outputs. The stereo TRS 1/4" headphone output features a level control, while the dual mono 1/4" outputs have their own independent level control. The Outs module is 6hp wide, 1.5" / 39.0mm deep, and requires 30mA of power. The module ships with a ribbon cable.

    The black Move [208] from Pittsburgh Modular is a mobile Eurorack modular synthesizer case designed to transport and protect up to 26 Eurorack modules. The case is hand-built from Ukrainian birch plywood and stained to emphasize its unique beauty. The case features four rails, each with 20 sliding square nuts and 80x 4-40-sized screws for mounting modules. The detachable lid allows for enough clearance to leave the modular fully patched during transport. A set of 8 nickel-plated steel corners and mounting screws is included, but not installed, allowing the owner to easily install the extra hardware if desired.

    The included DC power supply provides +12V @ 1400mA, -12v @ 1400mA, +5V @ 750mA of power. A single power rail delivers a full complement of power to the Eurorack bus system for up to 26 modules using standard 16-pin keyed power headers. The power board uses an external 15V 4A DC power adapter.
