  • 1Description

Comprising everything needed to enter the world of digital medium format photography, the 645Z Comprehensive Starter Kit from Pentax pairs the high-resolution camera body with a trio of lenses, an Advantage Gold Program extended warranty, a pair of 32GB SDHC memory cards, an extra D-LI90 lithium-ion battery, and a wheeled hard case with custom-cut foam interior for protecting and traveling with the kit.

  • 645Z Medium Format DSLR Camera (Body Only)

The 645Z Medium Format DSLR Camera (Body Only) from Pentax features a 43.8 x 32.8 mm CMOS sensor with 51.4 effective megapixels. The sensor is designed without an anti-aliasing filter to maximize sharpness and details. RAW files can be recorded at 14-bit and saved using either the proprietary PEF format or Adobe's DNG format.

An ISO range from 100-204,800 and high S/N ratio provides low noise, low light capability, and the Prime III image processor lends itself to fast image capture with a maximum of 3 fps continuous shooting. The SAFOX II autofocus module utilizes 27 autofocus points including 25 cross-type sensors and 3 AF sensors dedicated for low light focusing. The new Real Time Scene Analysis System features an 86,000 pixel RGB light-metering sensor for enhanced accuracy of exposure, white balance, and auto-focusing.

Full HD 1080 60i/30p/24p video capture is supported in the H.264 format with a dedicated button for instant switchover from stills to video. An external microphone jack enables high quality audio recording with manual sound level control and monitoring. An HDMI port outputs HD images to HDTVs and a USB 3.0 jack enables fast image transfer to your computer. Interval recording for time-lapse videos is supported with an output of UHD 4K resolution.

A 3.2", 1037k-dot, tilting, air-gapless, LCD monitor enables live view composition and playback viewing from a various angles and a trapezoid-shaped glass prism viewfinder with Kepler telescope-type eyepiece unit provides traditional eye-level composition. The design of the viewfinder also helps to achieve the relatively compact size of this medium format camera. The 645Z is extremely durable with an aluminum alloy chassis, magnesium alloy shell, and 76 specific weather seals to keep out moisture and dust. It is a camera designed for field as well as studio and can operate in temperatures from 14-104°F.

The camera body also features a deep set ergonomic grip, ideal for hand-held shooting, easy-to-access buttons, and a top-plate, sub-LCD screen that is angled up for easier visibility of camera information. A hot shoe mount is supported, and in addition to the tripod socket on the camera's base, a second tripod socket is located on the side of the camera for convenient and stable tripod shooting in the vertical position. Two SD slots are provided for versatile image storage and both Flucards and Eye-Fi cards are compatible for wireless image transfer. A free plug-in is available for seamless tethered shooting support in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, along with the USB 3.0 output for fast performance.

The 645Z is compatible with the new FA autofocus lenses as well as older 645 lenses and with Pentax 67 medium format lenses when used with an adapter.

    Full HD 1080 Video Capture
The 645Z supports full HD movie capture in the H.264 format at 60i, 30p and 24p, including the ability to switch from still image to video recording with the flip of a dedicated switch. Equipped with a built-in stereo microphone and a terminal for external microphone connection, the user can also adjust the audio recording level manually and visually monitor sound levels during recording.
    Interval Shooting with 4K Output
In-camera time lapse sequences can also be recorded using the built-in intervalometer, allowing up to 2000 shots to be recorded with 2 second to 24 hour delays, and output as 4K (3840 x 2160) files.
    3.2" 1,037k-dot Tilting Air-Gapless LCD
A 3.2", 1,037k-dot, air-gapless, LCD monitor is available and features a tilting design (-35° down and +125° upward) to benefit use from high or low viewing positions. An electronic level gauge can be utilized with either the viewfinder or LCD monitor during shooting, and when working in live view, a variety of grid overlays and manual focus peaking can be used for greater focusing accuracy.
    Pentaprism Viewfinder
A large, trapezoidal-shaped, glass pentaprism with Kepler telescope-type eyepiece enables bright and clear eye-level finding with 98% frame coverage.
    SAFOX II Autofocus Module
The SAFOX II autofocus module maximizes 27 AF sensors and a vast light sensitivity range of -3EV to +18EV. The new focus module includes 25 cross sensors and three AF sensors dedicated to low light focusing.

  • Pentax-D FA 645 55mm f/2.8 AL[IF] SDM AW Lens

New camera, new lens: this Pentax-D FA 645 55mm f/2.8 AL[IF] SDM AW Lens is the first model of the Pentax-D FA 645 lens series created for the Pentax 645D digital medium-format camera. With a focal length that's equivalent to a 43.5mm standard lens (in 35mm), it features optics optimized for digital photography to assure exceptional performance, and also provides an image circle covering the image area of existing 645-format film SLR cameras. It has dependable, dust-proof, weather-resistant construction for active outdoor photography.

This lens features a Supersonic Direct-drive Motor (SDM) autofocus drive and Quick-Shift for instant autofocus/manual focus switching,  Aero Bright coating to help prevent flare and ghost images, and it's Pentax's first 645 system lens to incorporate a rounded diaphragm for improved bokeh (the aesthetic quality of the blur in the out-of-focus areas of an image).

    State-of-the-Art Optics
Incorporating high-performance, hybrid aspherical optical element in its optics, this new standard lens (focal length equivalent to 43.5mm in the 35mm format) offers exceptional image-resolving power with outstanding brightness levels even at the edges, while compensating various aberrations to a minimum. All lens characteristics are optimized for digital photography: for instance, flare and ghost images are minimized by applying exclusive lens coatings to optical elements and employing anti-reflection materials for the interior of the lens barrel.
    Versatile Standard Lens
When mounted on the PENTAX 645D camera body, this standard lens offers a focal length which produces an angle of view close to that of the human eye. As the result, it can be used for many different kinds of subjects and applications, including landscapes and portraits.
    Dustproof, Weather-Resistant Construction
Seven special seals make this lens dustproof and weather-resistant. This lens coupled with the Pentax 645D camera body provides a durable, reliable digital SLR camera that performs superbly, even in rain, mist, or locations prone to water splashes and spray. The "AW" (All Weather) designation in the lens name testifies to the weather-resistant construction and it is rated to operate in temperatures from 14-104ºF (-10 to 40ºC).
Aero Bright Coating Dramatically Improves Image Description in Backlight
The Pentax original Aero Bright coating on this lens delivers brilliant, high-quality images by preventing flare and ghost images more effectively. This exclusive coating effectively reduces lens reflectance and greatly increases light transmittance by forming a silica aerogel layer with uniform pores on the surface of optical element.
Rounded Diaphragm to Produce a Beautiful Bokeh
The first Pentax medium-format interchangeable lens to feature a completely rounded diaphragm, it creates a natural, beautiful "bokeh" (out-of-focus rendition), while minimizing the streaking effect of point light sources.
    Smooth, Quiet SDM Autofocus
The SDM (Supersonic Direct-drive Motor) autofocus mechanism operates smoothly and quietly using the supersonic motor installed inside the lens barrel.
SP Coating Blocks Dust and Dirt
The front surface of the lens is treated with Pentax's SP (Special Protect) coating, which applies a fluorine compound to the lens surface through a vapor deposition process. This SP coating effectively repels dust, water and grease, and also makes it easy to wipe off fingerprints and cosmetics.
    Advanced Focus Options
Quick-Shift Focus system instantly switches to manual focus operation, after the subject is captured in focus by the AF system.

Pentax 645Z reviews

645Z Medium Format DSLR Comprehensive Starter Kit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the price I won't waste too much time reviewing the 645Z as the reviews for the camera specifically are pretty much right on but I will add that the action on the 645Z is surprisingly smooth. The kit is pricey but you're getting a great starter set up. You are ready to shoot right out of the case. The lenses are the best value. I was surprised how nice these lenses are given I have been mainly shooting Nikon and Nikkor for the past 25 years. I have always been wanting to jump into the medium format world but could not afford the price tags. For the price of a top end digital medium format you can get a camera that carries the same CMOS sensor as the other more expensive medium format systems and get three additional lenses. The case is the weakest part but only to a minor extent. Its nota Pelican but its sturdy and durable. If you are a world adventurer, you may want to trade up to a Pelican, but for more tame shoots, this case is quite satisfactory. I wish I could write more but I am still exploring this camera and am having a great time with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW! OK, I've only had this kit for about 2 weeks, but I am blown away by its quality and ease of use. I was considering a H5, but the cost of this kit with the lenses made it a very attractive offer, a kit w/ 3 lenses for the same price as just a body. The camera itself is quite intuitive, you pick it up, it's like using any dslr. The lenses are somewhat bulky, but no more than the Hassy lenses and these have shake control. The 24-45 lens is a beast in size and weight, but most of my work is on a tripod, so no big deal there. The lenses are tack sharp and the results from the 50mp sensor look as good as my 8x10 Velvia chromes. I do wish there was a wider lens available, but for the money, the results this kit gives me, it was a bargain. A tip of the hat to the B&H salesman, Nathan, who was patient, and knowledgeable and answered all questions and freely let me play with the demo camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Kit Added up individually, the savings with this kit is hard to beat. The case is the perfect size for carry-on and the three lenses are the first I'd pick for this camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A review of Kit not camera This is a review of the kit package and not the camera itself. First of all when you order the kit you only receive what you see in the picture. You will not be receiving any original boxing or packaging. You will receive warranty cards and instruction manuals. The travel case itself is not great, I wouldn't trust this case traveling internationally. Mostly due to the locks and clasps used. I have a large backpack that I fit my kit into and that way it is on me and not under the plane when traveling. There is a slight value to the kit as it saves a couple hundred dollars vs buying all the gear separately. It also includes membership to their pro services. My camera has issues out of the box and when I called Pentax they said their pro services was just an idea and not up and running. This really frightened me, but after tweeting Ricoh, (yes that was the only way i got a corporate response) they assured me the program was a real thing and they exchanged my faulty camera with a new 645z.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Kit This is a well-thought-out kit that includes all the newer 645 lenses you'd want.
