With simultaneous tri-band functionality the AC5300 Nighthawk X8 Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router from Netgear offers total bandwidth of up to 5.3 Gbps. With the ability to simultaneously support a single 2.4 GHz frequency and two 5 GHz frequencies users benefit from enhanced data transfer rates making is easy to stream multimedia content, transfer large files, game online, and more all at the same time with little to no lag.

The Nighthawk X8 features MU-MIMO (multiple user-multiple input multiple output) and beamforming technologies offering multiple data streams beamed directly to connected devices. As a result, each user has their own direct link to the router for a more stable and reliable connection. When numerous devices are connected to the Nighthawk X8 at the same time it becomes necessary to prioritize data streams to ensure things like online gaming and streaming multimedia content have the bandwidth needed to function smoothly. In order to accomplish this Netgear has implemented dynamic QoS (quality of service) functionality which automatically allocates bandwidth resources to latency sensitive applications.

On the outside of the Nighthawk X8 you will find 7 Gigabit Ethernet ports offering a fast reliable network connection to Ethernet enabled devices such as smart TVs, computers, game consoles, and more. In addition to Ethernet connectivity, you can plug in USB storage devices to either of the two USB ports and take advantage of Netgear's own ReadyCLOUD software to easily create your own personalized cloud storage service.

Fast Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router
The Nighthawk X8 AC5300 Smart Wi-Fi Router with Tri-Band Wi-Fi technology delivers a combined wireless speed of up to 5.3 Gbps. The X8 uses Smart Connect to optimize Wi-Fi performance by intelligently assigning every device to the fastest Wi-Fi band possible and doing so allows devices to connect at their maximum speed. Load Balancing distributes Wi-Fi devices ensuring usage of both the 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands.
Dynamic Quality of Service
Dynamic QoS resolves Internet traffic congestion when you have competing Internet demands at home. Dynamic QoS identifies your online activities by application and device, and then utilizes bandwidth allocation, and traffic prioritization techniques, to automatically allocate more bandwidth to latency sensitive applications like online gaming and video streaming, while ensuring that lower priority applications continue to work.
Active Antennas
Each generation of routers grows more powerful than the last, delivering stronger Wi-Fi signals with greater range. At the same time, the Wi-Fi signals on mobile devices are not getting more powerful. This difference in Wi-Fi performance reduces overall Wi-Fi range and speed.

To meet this challenge, NETGEAR developed Active Antennas technology. NETGEAR moved the Wi-Fi amplifiers from their usual location, on the router's motherboard, to the top of the antennas. These Active Antennas help improve Wi-Fi performance by amplifying signal in the antenna itself. This allows the router to receive cleaner and stronger signals from your mobile devices, avoiding signal degradation between the antennas and motherboard.

Using a single core processor would cause severe performance issues as various processes compete for CPU power. That's why the X8 utilizes a powerful 1.4GHz dual-core processor to separate processes and prioritize high performance Wi-Fi connections to get maximum combined Wi-Fi speeds of up to 5.3 Gbps.

    Rated 1 out of 5 by from Quit working after first day This router worked the first day I configured it, but then quit working by the beginning of the second day. The power light stayed lit a solid amber color (indicating that the router was starting up) and I had no internet or WIFI connection. I rebooted the router and cable modem several times with no change. I pressed the reset button on the router for 10 seconds and it wouldnt reset the router (the power light stayed lit solid amber). I called Netgear support and talked to a tech for 40 minutes and he wasnt able to get the router working either. He said the router was defective. I returned it for a refund and purchased an ASUS AC88U router which has been working great!

    Rated 3 out of 5 by from Effective wireless router, but... Use in home setting with 3 TVs, 1 iPad, 1 iPhone, 2 Apple TVs and 3 computers. Works fine. Do not use QOS, have no need as not all devices in use simultaneously. Found Smart Connect to be of no benefit. One star off for poor (compared to ASUS router it replaced) web interface poor network performance information (no real time rate graphs). One star off for Net Genie iPad app, sometimes displays different values from what displayed on computer. Liked abundance of Ethernet ports. Did not try link aggregation with NAS. To restore ability to monitor network in real-time and restore Trend Micro protection, will put old ASUS back in service as internet interface and use R8500 as network wireless access point.

I am also familiar with netgear routers, as I was upgrading, so sure that helped. It has been much more consistent and NOT dropping devices. I may not be using it to its potential, but stream a lot and so far has been great. It's footprint/ physical size is double the size of my previous device, but that is the only drawback i can think of
