Leica Summilux-TL 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Overview

A classic focal length and a bright maximum aperture, the black anodized Summilux-TL 35mm f/1.4 ASPH Lens is positioned as the reference lens for APS-C-format Leica mirrorless digital cameras. It is compatible with L mount mirrorless cameras, including all T-series models as well as SL-series cameras in APS-C crop mode, where it provides a normal-length 52.5mm equivalent focal length. The fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also avails extensive control over depth of field for selective focus applications. Additionally, the 12 elements in eight groups optical design incorporates four aspherical elements to control chromatic and spherical aberrations, and distortions, for increased clarity and sharpness. The autofocus system permits full-time manual focus override for fine-tuning your point of focus, as close as 1.3', and an inner focusing mechanism maintains the overall length of the lens during use.

Normal-length prime lens is designed for APS-C-format L mount mirrorless cameras, where it will provide a 52.5mm equivalent focal length. It is compatible with all Leica T cameras, as well as SL cameras when working in APS-C crop mode.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits shooting in low-light conditions and also offers greater control over focus position for using shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Four aspherical elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy.
Autofocus system can be manually overridden at any time for fine-tuned control. Additionally an inner focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens length during operation and also does not rotate the front 60mm filter mount, benefitting the use of polarizers or graduated filters.

Leica Summilux-TL 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Reviews

Terrific Prime Lens

This is the second time I have owned this lens. Originally I had this lens and used it on an SL601. Image quality was terrific. Almost equal to a 50 Summilux on an M10. I sold my SL601 and sold this lens. I now own an SL2 and was searching for a light weight 50 to use with the SL2. The 50 SL Summilux is way too heavy for. I tried the Panasonic 50 and it was OK but I knew I could do better. That's when I decided to reacquire this particular lens. I know that on the SL2 TL lenses record images at only 20MP. However that's a compromise I am happy to make shooting this lightweight optical wonder. Lovely soft smooth Bokeh, crips detail at the point of focus and stunning contrast. I highly recommend this lens for any SL2 shooter.

This is a beautiful lens. It produces great contrast and beautiful bokeh. Yes it’s expensive, but anything Leica is. It really does justice to the capabilities of the CL.

Beautiful lens.

I think some reviewers’ complaints reflect shortcomings of the original TL camera, rather than this lens. On the TL2 and CL, it is outstanding. The image quality is absolutely worthy of the Summilux name, and the autofocus is quick and precise. Loving it.

Lens is solid.  Hood fell apart immediately.

This lens is as others have written. I (so far, just purchased) would give it four or even five stars. The hood is a faulty design. It has an inner ring that fits inside that is the bayonet mount to the lens. On the fourth or fifth use the ring fell out. I can put it back in (it seems to hold when attached for use, but falls out every time if the hood is reversed for storage). B&H suggested I return the hood to them, but I will then be without a hood while they return it to Leica. Leica's typical repair pattern is to keep anything for at least six weeks before looking at it. And because the only fix would be to glue the ring into the hood . . . well I could do that myself. The REAL fix would be to redesign the bad design. But Leica never admits design mistakes, so . . . This is SO frustrating. Just as a P.S. - the size of the hood makes the lens in use ridiculously long. This is in effect a 50+ mm equivalent lens. The hood does not need to be this long.

I got this lens for my Leica SL Typ 601 and CL. It works good for both system and actually better ergonomics when you combine with SL system. When you have enough light situation, this lens provide better resolution than any other full frame 50ish prime. I also have Sony A7R II with Sony Zeiss 50mm F1.4 ZA and compared both lens at the same shooting situations side by side. Except soft bokeh at maximum aperture, Leica TL Summilux is out performe all situation, so I eventually understood why people praise Leica Summilux lens. It is a lot smaller but better in terms of resolution. I know everyone pursue certain characteristics from main prime lens around 50, so resolution is not the main answer. For the character, you usually need to sacrifice resolution a little bit (Zeiss planar 50mm f1.4 is a good example). I think this lens is just the conclusion unless you choose Leica M 50s in terms of quality and size and this lens provide auto focus. This lens is true full frame killer and best from crop sensor prime.

My go-to lens

Picked up this lens for my CL. The 50mm-equivalent focal length is perfect for portraiture, street, documentary work, even landscapes. Lots of folks seem to have this notion that the APS-C sensor of the CL is somehow inferior to the full frame Leicas. It isn’t. Paired with the CL’s 24mp sensor, this lens delivers images that are sharp edge-to-edge, offer beautiful bokeh and excellent color rendition, and are nearly impossible to differentiate from the images I get on my 24mp SL2-S with a 50mm Summicron SL. This lens is incredibly well made, if a tad heavy on the CL at times. I highly recommend getting the CL handgrip in order to carry it around comfortably for all day shooting. This lens is fantastic for low-light and night shoots, and has performed perfectly in every scenario I’ve needed it for. A workhorse lens and a ton of fun for personal work as well. My only, ONLY critique of this lens is that the autofocus could be a tad quicker, but since I’m not a sports or wildlife photographer, this has hardly been an issue. I know folks are attracted to the 47mp sensor of the Q2, but if you’re drawn to 50mm shooting, I would recommend this lens on the CL in a heartbeat. Terrific combination that I look forward to shooting with for years to come.

question

When mounted on Leica SL what focal length will it provide? Will it give 35 mm at full 24 mp resolution on SL?
Asked by: Jaweed W.
T lenses have electronics and are recognized my the SL as being APS-C only. So the resolution will decrease to 10MP, providing the same FOV as a 50mm full frame lens.
