This leaf-colored Mapcase from Able Archer is modeled after mid-20th century, European map-and-document military satchels. Reconfigured for modern use while retaining the functional form factor of the original incarnations, this bag is suitable for daily travel and offers three user-selectable carry options. Whether configured as a hand-carry briefcase, a shoulder bag, or a backpack, this Mapcase provides easy, on-the-go access to a laptop as well as books, binders, files, and small electronics. A padded laptop compartment within this bag's main compartment is able to accommodate most 15" laptops and can be conveniently accessed through multiple quick-access zippers.
To help maximize the versatility of this Mapcase's main compartment, this bag features an expandable design that is achieved through side and bottom walls that can be compressed or widened by a wrap-around zipper. When fully expanded, the main compartment can be used to accommodate objects that are thicker than document-related items; including photo gear such as either a mirrorless camera or a small DSLR, each with a compact lens. Releasing the outer sides reveal MOLLE-compatible loops from top to bottom that complement the MOLLE-compatible loops throughout this Mapcase's front and rear, all of which allow for the attachment of MOLLE accessory pouches to any point along the front, back, or sides of this bag. The MOLLE-compatible loops that cover this Mapcase's front and rear also allow the two included top-carry handles to be detached and reconfigured as backpack straps that offer three fit sizes in order to help best accommodate the wearer. Two removable, length-adjustable straps that utilize the MOLLE-compatible loops are included as well. When installed toward the bottom front of this bag along with its removable front flap, their snap-button closures allow that flap to be secured before the straps themselves can be used to pull the flap snug against this Mapcase.
The front flap is attached to the bag itself by two snap-button closures along the top of the rear side. This allows the flap to cover the top of this Mapcase; however, the bag's own top zipper and its contents, should that top zipper be left open, are easily accessible by opening the flap's conveniently positioned, waterproof, quick-access zipper, which is intended to be directly positioned above the Mapcase's main compartment.
Inside the main compartment and opposite the laptop compartment is a zippered, neoprene accessory pocket that includes two organizer pockets. The organizer pockets can be used to hold hard drives, portable batteries, or small electronics; and between them are two pen slots. Above each accessory pocket and the laptop pocket is a memory card panel that includes three SD-type card holders and two CompactFlash card holders. Together, those two panels provide dedicated space for six SD-type cards and four CompactFlash cards. To secure miscellaneous items within this bag, its inner walls are also lined with MOLLE-compatible loops. Unlike the loops along the outside of this Mapcase, these inner loops are overlaid with elastic bands that are one, two, or three inches wide, allowing for a variety of items other than MOLLE accessory pouches to also be directly secured and prevented from shifting during transport while inside this bag.
Like its accessory pocket, this Mapcase's laptop pocket includes its own dedicated zipper that can keep its contents sealed from other items placed within this bag. That zipper may also be closed to prevent a laptop from slipping out in the event this Mapcase's main compartment is completely opened and the entire bag is suddenly turned upside down. For easier retrieval of a stored laptop, particularly when the main compartment zipper is sealed and when the front flap is in use, a water-resistant, quick-access zipper along the rear of this bag allows the laptop pocket to be directly accessed at any time. When traveling to an international destination, the front flap can be peeled back to reveal a discreet passport pocket that faces the front of this Mapcase and is closed with a magnetic seal.
