Kirk QR-AB1QR Overview

The QR-AB1QR from Kirk Enterprises is a universal quick release adapter that converts nearly any non-Arca tripod head into an Arca-type compatible support.

Utilizing a universal mounting block, the adapter can be mounted on top of any existing 1/4"-20 tripod or quick release thread to convert that mount into an Arca-type compatible clamp. The included 2.6" quick release clamp is then attached to the mounting block to provide a twist-resistant connection.

The clamp features Kirk's quick-turn release knob which allows the user to shift the quick release plate's position after just a 1/8 knob turn and fully remove the plate with just a 1/2 knob turn. Constructed for durability, the clamp and adapter feature no exposed internal mechanisms and include an integrated 5/32 hex wrench for convenient assembly.

I use this with a Manfrotto 500 Fluid Head. If you have this head as well, you might notice there is very little clearance between the bottom of your camera's lens and Manfrotto's base plate. Operating a zoom ring can become awkward with lenses that have a larger diameter. Besides opening up Arca Swiss options, the Kirk QR-AB1QR's adapter base will add height to give you a comfortable clearance between your lens and the Manfrotto base plate. The quality of the material is very solid. It is also very secure structurally. It is fastened to your base plate with 2 bolts so it will not tilt out of alignment once installed. The weight of itself contributes to the overall stability. It feels very secure. By adding this quick release system to your Manfrotto 500 fluid tripod head along with a camera bracket, you can easily mount and dismount your camera without having to reposition the Manfrotto long plate if you've set it at a specific position to balance your camera. It's a bit expensive. But I am highly satisfied with the product. It is well crafted with quality material. The quick release knob has a matte silver finish which nicely contrasts against black. A magnetic slot for your 5/32 hex key is aptly positioned under the quick release plate if you need to make adjustments to your setup. This quick release system adds versatility and it makes for a stable setup whether vertically or horizontally oriented.

Use Arca-Swiss plates on your video monopod!

This is a tool I have been on the hunt for for over two years! I wanted to be able to use my Arca Swiss plates that I use for stills when I shoot video. The larger Manfrotto plates are great, but for smaller form factor Sony mirrorless cameras, they're a bit too big. This adaptor gives me clearance to place it on top of my video monopod and my video tripod and thus can use my Arca-Swiss plates for both stills and video! And the price isn't too bad either! A great find and I'm super stoked about it!

Excellent product.

Quality is excellent, and it does the job it is supposed to. Even though it's made in USA, I still don't really understand why the price is so high. But there's nothing else quite like it.

Best clamp you can buy

This clamp is pretty awesome. In about 10 seconds I can switch from my camera L-Bracket to a lens with a tripod collar. It is on the expensive side but is also awesome quality.

This is a superb piece of kit.  It is a little expensive, but it does the job exactly as advertised, so cost for me is not an issue.  I am using it on a Manfrotto MHXPRO-2W pan/tilt head.  For interests sake, I attached the supplied plate to my camera, and was left underwhelmed by the tendency for the plate to twist.  An Arca-Swiss plate designed specifically for the camera used is the way to go IMO, and then all that is required for a secure connection is the Kirk QR-AB1QR.  A subjective, personal observation is that it is a little bigger than I thought it would be, but this is no way a problem.

Works ad advertised

I purchased a Kirk L bracket for my D300/battery grip. I need to add an Arca Swiss Clamp to my Manfrontto 3130 pan/tilt head. This system uses the 200PL plates. During my research, I found Kirk made the QR-AB1QR universal assembly that would mount to the 200PL plate. Worked as advertised. Kirk is made in USA,fit and finish - excellent, integrated hex wrench (enabled me to remove the L bracket when not in use),I wanted a clamp that was built by the same manufacture to guarantee 100% comparability to the L bracket, and the silver clamp knob (easy to see, with the quick turn, adjustment felt smooth/precision feel, locked securely to the bracket and no exposed internal mechanisms). I would like to have seen Kirk add the bubble level that is available on their other QRC mounts. Just be aware the bottom of the QR-AB1QR is different from the Kirk QRC-3.18 clamp (this can be mounted on other Arca Swiss ball mount) vs the square bottom on the QR-AB1QR which mounts on the universal plate (anti rotation).

The adapter relies on 1/4-20 studs (from below on the original mounting plate, and from the top on the arca swiss block) to hold the entire assembly...what are the weight/torque limits on this kind of set up? How much should one trust a single 1/4-20 stud to hold big glass?
Asked by: John
I would say that if you feel that way, you should trust your expensive glass to double 1/4" or single 3/8".

Can you change the Befree Live plate to arca-swiss?
Asked by: Mike L.
Yes, the adaptor block that comes with the Quick Release can be attached to any style of quick-release plate with a 1/4-20 stud. I have used them with Manfrotto RC2, RC4, and RC5 plates (the BeFree uses a RC5 plate), as well as Velbon and Giottos plates. It is a excellent, well-made product.
