Z CAM E1 overview

  • 1Description

Miniature in size yet big on performance, the Z CAM E1 is an interchangeable camera system that packs the feature-set of a mirrorless camera into a body more akin to an action camera. The E1 features an active Micro Four Thirds lens mount and a 16MP MFT Panasonic CMOS sensor that supports DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) video at 24 fps, UHD (3840 x 2160) at 30 fps, and 1080p video up to 60 fps. The camera can also shoot 16 megapixel stills in JPEG or uncompressed DNG raw formats, with full resolution burst mode shooting up to 15 fps.

In addition to physical buttons and a rear LCD screen, the camera can be remotely controlled over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth 4.0 using an iOS or Android mobile device. This lets you take advantage of the small form factor by mounting the E1 in hard-to-reach places, while still able to remotely monitor, trigger, manage content, and even power the camera from its standby mode. The E1 is constructed from a die-cast magnesium alloy body that weighs only 8.9 oz, including the 2000mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. Its low weight and small footprint make it a compact 4K camera you can carry with you at all times, as well as being well-suited to capturing action-camera-type POV footage and mounting on UAVs for aerial photography.

16 Megapixel CMOS Sensor
A 16MP MFT Panasonic CMOS sensor pairs with an Ambarella chipset to deliver the image quality and image processing required to support 4K video and 16MP raw images in a variety of lighting conditions. The camera uses advanced 3D noise filters (three selectable levels) for cleaner images in low-light environments, and offers a maximum sensitivity of ISO 25,600 in auto mode.
4K Video Recording
The E1 supports 4K (4096 x 2160) and UHD (3840 x 2160) video recording at 60 Mbps in the MOV format using H.264 compression. 4K video is recorded at 24 fps and UHD video can be recorded at 24 or 30 fps. Full HD 1080p video up to 60 fps is also supported, as well as 720p up to 240 fps for slow-motion playback. 4K video mode uses a slight crop of the sensor to provide full pixel readout for higher quality imagery with reduced moiré and aliasing. The 1080p video modes also use this crop, delivering downscaled images rather than using line skipping or pixel binning.
16 Megapixel Still Photos
More than just a 4K video camera, the E1 takes up to 16 megapixel still images in JPEG or raw DNG formats. Burst shooting modes also allow you to pair high continuous shooting rates with continuous AF. Full resolution 16 megapixel JPEG photos can be taken in bursts up to 15 fps. Additionally, interval recording is available for creating time-lapse videos.
Active MFT Lens Mount
Equipped with an active MFT lens mount, the E1 is able to take advantage of autofocus and image stabilization supported by select Olympus and Panasonic lenses. The mount also supports a growing range of manual focus MFT lenses, as well as being adaptable to virtually any modern or vintage lens using optional third-party adapters.
Continuous Autofocus
The E1's advanced focusing technology allows for continuous autofocus in both photos and video. Different sensitivity settings are available to adapt to different scenes and help you keep track of your subjects while filming. When focusing manually, the camera features an automatic, on-screen zoom preview to help you achieve optimum focus on your subject.
Built-In Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Utilizing built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, the E1 can be paired with iOS and Android mobile devices running the E1 App. Using the app, users can control, monitor, remotely trigger, and manage content. The E1 can also be powered on from the app when the camera is in Bluetooth standby mode, meaning you can fully operate the camera without needing to make physical contact with it. This is great when the camera is mounted in hard-to-reach locations. The camera can remain in standby mode for up to two weeks.
Body Design
The E1 is a versatile, compact, interchangeable lens 4K camera. Weighing just under 8.9 ounces (without a lens) and measuring only 3 x 2.2" and 2" in depth, the camera can literally fit into your pocket and can even be mounted and worn in similar ways as an action camera. The durable die-cast magnesium body is specifically designed to dissipate the heat the image processor produces when recording 4K video.

    Z CAM E1 reviews

E1 Mini 4K Interchangeable Lens Camera is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 68.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from E1 Review This mini camera had so much promise. Its small form factor and large sensor size made it a game changer for actions cameras and not to mention its 4k resolution. However, the customer service and lack of product development forced me to remove some stars. When the item was introduced, it was buggy to say the least. After a few firmware updates, the camera performed a little bit better. The company also promised a gimbal stabilizer and underwater housing as well as other accessories. These accessories were the main reason I purchased the camera. Any accessories availaible? NOPE. I would hold out on the camera until they produce what was promised.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This camera is so freaking awesome ! I am really impressed with the e1 camera! I used to shoot with my friends downtown and on the beach, and it looked amazing in 4k. Being able to interchange lenses on such a small camera is so great. I can take it anywhere I go and really capture moments like I never could before. All of my friends wanted to play with it and we had so much fun taking pictures all together and trying it! The E1 is so easy to use, and the app is just awesome. I was able to also control the camera from my phone; this was great. Controlling the camera from my phone made it even more easy to use. I am so glad I made this purchase and really recommend it to people. Z team did a great job.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No there yet I just received this camera with hopes it can replace a go pro for lower light situations. Sadly it cant. The higher ISO is very noisy and the ghosting is terrible. The camera also has no meter display. I have other 4k 4/3 cams that produce much better video and photos. I hope they can update the firmware an add a higher video bit rate. 60Mbit isn't cutting it. The Lumix LX100 has a 100Mbit 4k video and its easily 10 times better than the Z cam. A 4/3 sensor at F2.5 should get much better video. I hope a firmware update can make up for the money I just apparently wasted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little game changer Maybe user error is the issue with the camera not connecting to an iOS device, but I have no issues connecting it with my iPhone 7. Anyways, the camera is really handy for jobs where you want to remain incognito. Sometimes I’ll get looks from a passerby because I have this camera attached to a gimbal, which you will definitely need for handheld moving shots. The camera’s image is a little jittery if holding it handheld without any stabilizing tools. Regardless, once on a tripod or gimbal the image out of this camera is comparable to some cinema cameras! Definitely worth a purchase even if used for B or C cams! Oh yea and the capability to switch lenses is awesome!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great camera with lots of potential I am learning videography, and as I have a large set of m43 lenses, this was a good starting point - cheaper than a GH4 and the Black Magic alternatives. 1. It takes a lot of getting used to. 2. You must use an external video recorder such as Video Assist (Black Magic) as the LCD Screen just sucks. 3. Has most options you'll want with an intuitive menu. 4. Hindered by weaker photo quality and poor white balance set up 5. Great option to install at harder to place locations.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good tool to have My first thoughts with firmware.21 were not good. I have been using the.25 firmware and its much better all around. 2 separate ways for time-lapse is nice. One as stills and one as .MOV. The newer high ISO have expected noise but image still looks good. This is a beta firmware so I expect even better things to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice camera for use with MFT lenses I use the camera as a way to collect unattended 4K non-main video track during an event (last one was a choir concert in a church). The limits: one battery lasts me for about 1h 20m of video, one 64GB microSDHC card lasts me for about 2h 21m of video. I haven't been using WiFi feature when recording - I assume battery would last less. There are two batteries enclosed so one could record up to 2h 40m of video which would require slightly more than 64GB. The camera generates nice video which I can use in my multi-camera editing. I have used it with 14mm F2.5 lens and I was pleasantly surprised during the video editing that I saw no fish-eye distortion. I will buy more lenses because I'm now convinced that this little camera is a keeper. I am running it with the 0.26 version of the firmware (it originally came with 0.21 and I updated it using an Android phone app). Note that there's no stabilizer in the system therefore you either need to make sure that you capture the video in a stable setting (e.g., tripod on a stable footing) or deal with the shakes in video editing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stunned I purchased mine through the Kickstarter campaign. I'm still learning the camera. I've upgraded the firmware to 2.1. So far, I'm stunned at the quality of what this camera can produce: both images and video. I'm using the MetaBones convertor for Canon EF lenses and post processing with Adobe Premier and Photoshop. I give it just four stars for now as my evaluation is in the preliminary stages. Two batteries come with the camera. Don't leave one in the camera when transporting in a bag as the 'On' button is somewhat easy to actuate and you'll discover your battery run down and your camera, hot. The LCD screen is hard to see with any accuracy during shoots, unless you're looking straight at it, and the resolution won't give you any idea as to the extreme quality of the images being produced, until Post.
