Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM Overview

Well-suited to portraiture and isolating subject matter, the Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM is a short-telephoto prime characterized by its slightly compressed perspective for achieving flattering results. Its bright f/2 maximum aperture also benefits using shallow depth of field techniques as well as working in low-light conditions. Short-telephoto, portrait-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 160mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM Reviews

Very good image quality

This lens is very well built and has even better image quality the the 85mm f1.8 version. Focusing is fast and quiet. Only cons are no stabilization (come on, Canon, and catch up to the times by putting stabilization into the bodies!) and is too big and bulky. But it does a great job with image quality so I’ll live with the excess weight for my Canon RP until I can switch to a smaller, lighter lens system with stabilized bodies.

Amazing people/portrait lens

I am a Nikon shooter, but recently bought a Sony Alpha A6500. Nikon is not the ideal run & gun ecosystem (DSLR) for video. Not very satisfied with Sony's lens line up I looked into Canon... All I can say this is a true gem for photographers looking for a portrait (or people in general) lens. The color rendering and out of focus areas are nothing less than amazing. This lens has the qualities I love from my 105 mm f2 DC Nikkor lens. It is also on par with the 135 f2 from Canon. I am not sure this may be a super fast lens, but for non-superfast moving people it is more than ideal. FWIW I am using this on a Sony A6500 + Fotodiox ProFusion adapter, and the focusing accuracy/speed is more than satisfactory. I highly recommend this little gem!

Great for travel

Excellent optics. Light weight. Great portrait lens. I use it for travel because it is light and compact. Beats a heavy telephoto zoom.

Great lens.

This is a follow-up to my 2015 review. This lens still continues to blow me away in full frame format. It has to be one of Canon's most underrated lenses. It excels in all possible ways. My prior review primarily focused on landscape photography at smaller apertures. I'm now also using this lens at large apertures for shallow depth of field photography (plants/flowers). Image quality from f/2.2 to f/2.8 is exceptional. Very sharp deep into the mid-frame with excellent bokeh, minimal light fall-off, and excellent color/contrast. f/2.5 and beyond is edge to edge sharp. This lens is also becoming my go-to environmental wildlife lens for elk in low light. The compact lightweight portability of this lens is just such a no-brainer. I hope that Canon never discontinues this lens. Red ring L quality in an affordable compact lightweight package. The obvious alternative to this lens is its sibling the EF 85mm f/1.8 which is also very good.. I've extensively used that lens over the years. The EF 100mm f/2 is a bit better in all aspects and is my personal preference overall. You just can't go wrong buying this lens. I've said in other reviews that it sometimes comes down to red ring bragging rights or results. This lens falls into that category. Results always win for me. Rugged durability or apertures larger than f/2 are in my opinion the only reasons to consider the similar L offerings. I'll take affordable lightweight portability every time if it delivers the goods.

Take pictures outdoors in the wood and at the beach. Getting some great shoots, just move to full sensor, lens is very sharp in all corners. Ordering was easy, shipped right away, came in two days.

I shoot fashion, weddings, portraits. This lens is so sharp and so light weight. It's perfect for portraits, and head shots as well as weddings and fashion. I just bought into Canon 5d mk III, love the color love my 50mm f/1.2 but I love this lens almost as much. I have the 35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.2, 100mm f/2. Now I want the 135mm f/2 next.

is this one fast enough for indoor sports?
Asked by: Lynnz
Yes, the Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM Lens is certainly fast enough for indoor sports. Other factors, are the model of camera one is using, and what is the best ISO to make it happen, allowing for a high shutter speed to stop the action.

question

Is this lens sharp wide open? I want it for my Sony A7Rii (42MP)
Asked by: Luis
I was extremely impressed with this lens and it has become my go to lens for action shots because of its large aperture. I bought it primarily shooting with a Canon T3i and now have a 5D Mark III. I still use this lens on both cameras because it is a fast lens that focuses quickly and quietly. I would say the lens is sharp...ish, but is on a completely different level than Canon L glass. That said, this is a lens for the budget conscious consumer like myself. You probably won't find a lens that is sharper at this price. I bought it from B&H for $379 so you may want to see if they drop the price before buying it. Last thing, I am not familiar with Sony's cameras or lens mounts, so make sure that the lens will fit your camera. Hope this helps.
