Allen & Heath ZEDI-10 Overview

Designed to bring the signature Allen & Heath sensibility to a compact and portable frame, the ZEDi-10 is a ten-channel compact mixer that doubles as a USB interface. On the mixer side, you get four XLR inputs, four line inputs, two instrument ports, and two pairs of stereo line inputs. Utilize this unit's digital capabilities and you'll find yourself with four channels of conversion—analog-to-digital or vice-versa. Thus, you'll find the ZEDi-10 equally suited for live-mixing in small venues and for tracking instruments on the fly.

Should you choose use the unit as an interface, you'll find that it comes with Cubase LE, a digital audio workstation which enables you to record, sequence, and edit music, be it audio or MIDI.

In the analog realm, the ZEDi-10 is crafted with preamps modeled on the Allen & Heath GS2-R24. These channel strips aim to provide warmth, low noise, and a vast expanse of headroom. On-board EQs also come standard with the unit. Two channels feature a button that converts line-level signal into high-impedance jacks, meaning guitar players need not lug an extra DI box around should they wish to go direct into the board.

Turning your attention back to the digital side of things, you'll notice that a USB switch controls the routing of your USB output, enabling you to select how you route and separate the incoming analog signals into your DAW.

Allen & Heath ZEDI-10 Reviews

Waste of space - unusable EQ/Hi pass

I bought this unit because I'm tired of having to switch mic cables, and only be able to use 2 at a time. For that, it works. I can record 4 separate mics, assigned to separate channels. Build quality is fine. The preamps sound OK ... certainly not as good as the RME Babyface (one of the first things I checked out of curiosity). The warmth some have reported is a.k.a. dullness or lacking air. It is however, pretty slight (listening on my Sennheiser HD800 open-back headphones). It is not offensive and sure, I could say warmth if I was being nice. There is noise, and it's a little gurgly. Not overt, but certainly more than the RME, which is a smooth sheen of noise when cranked. Compared to the RME, the amount of gain is paltry. The RME at 60% is louder and fuller than the Allen and Heath at 90%. So the noise is higher in actual use. NOT horrible, but definitely noticeable. However the reason I'm returning this is that the EQ and yes, even the hi-pass filter switch is unusable. That is to say, as I have it situated, on channels 1 & 2 (or specifically USB out 1,2), there is no way to activate EQ/hi pass to the outputs 1,2. So two channels of useless knobs (for my purposes). On channels 3/4 (or 1 and 2, if you prefer) one can send to USB output 3/4 with EQ and lo cut (high pass) if you route them one to FX and one to Aux. However, in doing this the one to Aux can also be heard in the mix, which messed it up for overdubbing. There are no mutes or solos. No inserts. I know, I know .. get what you pay for, etc. No, I wasn't buying it specifically for the EQ, but it would have been nice to have from time to time, and certainly the high pass! Then the space they take up would have made some sense. Well, in this case I would be paying for it for longer, as its form and footprint does not present any usefulness to me, thereby preventing me from using the space it is occupying in a more comfortable/useful manner. I wish I had known this beforehand. Living in AK I don't get free shipping. So this mistake will cost me over $50. What a waste.

Can i record 4 tracks simultaneously by usb?
Asked by: Marcelo
With both USB Out Source Select buttons in the up position, channels 1 through 4 will output via USB. This is from the ZEDi-10 manual, describing how the USB interface section works: A built-in 4 in, 4 out, 24-bit/96kHz USB Audio Interface allows for studio-quality recording direct from your mixer to your PC without the need of any additional equipment. This is class-compliant (plug-and-play) for Mac and iOS devices. (iOS devices require a camera connection kit). Simply connect a USB cable between the USB port on the mixer and the USB port on your computer or device. For Windows systems, driver software must be installed in order for it to work. The latest drivers and documentation can be found at www.allen-heath.com/downloads 1. MONITOR OUT is an unbalanced stereo line level output using standard RCA phono sockets. This could be used for connecting to external equipment such as monitor speakers or a phones/ in-ear monitoring system. 2. USB connector is a Type-B USB connector for multi-channel bi-directional audio streaming between the mixer and a computer and follows the high speed USB 2.0 standard. 3. USB OUT SOURCE SELECT buttons allow you to chose where the signal to the outputs of the USB interface output is taken from. M1 - M2 - AUX - FX selects the USB OUT source from channels M1, M2 and the AUX and FX buss outputs and has priority over the default M1 - M2 - M3 - M4 source select. M1 - M2 - L - R selects the USB OUT source from channels M1, M2 & MAIN MIX and has priority over the M1 - M2 - AUX - FX source select switch. If neither of these buttons are selected the default channel USB OUT source is taken directly from channels M1 - M2 - M3 - M4. 4. ST2 and ST3 to AUX send control the level of signal sent to the AUX OUT. This is useful for routing USB IN 1-2 and USB IN 3-4 to the PHONES or MONITOR OUT 5. ST2 & ST3 MIX rotary faders control the volume of the USB IN 1-2 or USB IN 3-4 signals into the MAIN MIX respectively.
