You shouldn't have any issues with using this camera for catching birds in flight....the only problem I have had is that it is a heavy lens....so build up those muscles!

This is my primary camera for professional work and I love it, I also love doing bird photography for myself so with that in mind, I would say that this is not the best choice for birding. You should get something that is faster and not full-frame.

There are a lot of comments regarding that this camera should be used with a tripod to insure sharpness... But weight wise it's pretty comparable to the mk III. What is the cause of lack of sharpness when handheld?

I always use a tripod except in very direct sunlight with high shutter speeds for the reasons noted above. Love this camera so this isn't a critical remark.
