Great for beginners, this Tascam TM-80 Studio Condenser Kits from B&H gives you everything you need to record, mix, and edit your own audio productions on your Mac/Windows computer—using the software of your choice.

The kit comes with the Tascam TM-80 studio condenser microphone, a Polsen XLR-USB-48 USB audio interface, a USB cable to connect the interface to your computer, and a desktop microphone stand.

Also included is a pair of studio headphones to monitor your recordings in comfort.

Tascam TM-80 Large-Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone

For singers, rappers, and musicians who need a large-diaphragm studio condenser mic and don't have the funds to go big, the Tascam TM-80 presents a simple solution. Since it shares design characteristics with pricier mics and has no switches to configure, it offers a blend of quality and ease of use that makes it appealing for home recording. Also included with the mic are a shockmount, tabletop tripod stand, and mic cable, making the TM-80 a complete mic package.

The heart of the mic is its 0.7" aluminum-diaphragm condenser capsule, which produces a hotter output level and wider frequency range than most dynamic mics. Use it on vocals, acoustic instruments, or even guitar/bass speaker cabinets. By utilizing a cardioid polar pattern, the TM-80 is able to capture less room sound and background noise than the omnidirectional mics found in computers and mobile devices. For proper functionality of the TM-80, it should be plugged into to the XLR input of a device that can supply phantom power.

For Vocal and Instrument Recording

The TM-80 offers strong output signal and full-spectrum tone that enables it to clearly reproduce vocals (sung or spoken) as well as instruments, thanks to its high sensitivity and 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response. Compared to a typical handheld dynamic mic, the TM-80 needs less gain and produces a wider frequency response. Considering its maximum SPL handling of 136 dB, it can also be used on guitar cabinets and some drum miking applications.

Friendly for Home Setups

Whereas most mics built into computers and smartphones pick up sound from all directions, the TM-80's cardioid condenser element captures minimal sound behind it. This behavior allows it to lessen the presence of room reflections in recordings, a significant benefit when working in places that lack acoustic treatment.

Phantom Power Required

Since the TM-80 needs phantom power to operate, it must be connected to a device that can send phantom power rated between 9 and 48 VDC, which most audio interfaces, mixers, and mic preamps can do. Rather than plugging the mic into a computer soundcard or a mobile device, the TM-80 is designed to be connected to an XLR mic input.

Shock-Absorbing Mount

By placing the TM-80 in the included shockmount, it is decoupled from the stand and separated from vibrations and rumble that would otherwise travel through the stand to the mic. Use the supplied mini tripod for convenient tabletop positioning, or attach the shockmount on a larger mic stand when you need to use it while standing or recording instruments from above.

The HPC-A30-MK2 Closed-Back Studio Monitor Headphones from Polsen offer a solution for experiencing rich and natural sound when listening to music through a mobile device or monitoring a podcast on your computer. These headphones can also be used for DJ work, thanks to the swiveling earcups that let you monitor audio while keeping one ear free.

The HPC-A30-MK2's over-ear design isolates the sound and prevents leakage for optimum listening conditions in loud environments, such as a club or on the go. The 10' cable also gives you the freedom to move around while working and terminates in a 1/8" TRS stereo plug, which is compatible with most mobile devices and computers. In addition, a stereo 1/4" adapter is included to plug into a stereo or mixing board.

Over-Ear Design

The over-ear design isolates sound in loud environments and prevents leakage for optimum listening conditions. This design is good for listening to music on a busy street, and for DJs who need to monitor their audio in a noisy club.

DJ Applications

The headphones are suitable for DJ applications and include a tuned bass response for low-end clarity. The pivoting earcups are ideal for one-ear or on-the-shoulder monitoring. A padded headband offers to keep you comfortable during a lengthy session.

Broadcast and Podcast

The headphones allow for monitoring audio on a laptop or in a home studio as well as recording a vlog on a smartphone.

Swiveling and Rotating Earcups

If you're a DJ who likes to keep one ear free, you can swivel one of the earcups for on-the-shoulder monitoring. The earcups also rotate 90° so you can turn one of the earcup outward for one-ear handheld monitoring.

10' Cable

A headphone cable that's too short is almost like sitting on the sidelines—you can't be part of the action. If you need to move around while you work, the 10' cable will allow you to move about freely.

Can this work with any audio interface and headphones?
Asked by: Tien
Yes, you can use the Tascam TM-80 with any audio interface, but it is best to use an interface that supplies phantom power or you will need to use a separate phantom power supply for the mic.

question

What is your best vocals and voice settings in Logic X for this Mic? Can't really find any settings I like? EQ, plugins, others?
Asked by: Fredrik J.
The answer to that question is to just learn yourself. There's no definitive knowledge base out there for questions like that, you just have to experiment. Practice makes perfect, and the work you have to put in to figure out stuff like this is the reason professional audio engineers get paid in the first place.
