Tamron 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

A versatile telephoto zoom for Canon EF shooters, the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens and Filter Kit from B&H bundles the long-reaching optic with a 95mm UV Haze filter to guard the lens' front element from dust and scratches and also reduce unwanted haze and bluish casts from ultraviolet light.

The SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD is a 4x telephoto zoom well-suited for a variety of outdoor, wildlife, and sports shooting applications. The optical design incorporates a trio of low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and individual elements also feature both eBAND and BBAR coatings to suppress flare and ghosting. This Canon EF mount version sees the inclusion of Vibration Compensation image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld and tracking shooting. Additionally, an Ultrasonic Silent Drive benefits fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance and also permits full-time manual focus override for fine-tuning your focus position at any time.

  • Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens for Canon

The Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens for Canon is an expansive telephoto-zoom lens designed for both full-frame and APS-C-sized image sensors. Its 4x zoom design covers standard telephoto to super telephoto perspectives, making it ideally suited to working with a wide variety of subject matter. Benefitting this range is VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization, which helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to enable the use of longer shutter speeds or smaller apertures when hand-holding in low-light conditions. A USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) autofocus motor provides quick and precise focusing performance, with high torque, low response times, and quiet operation to benefit both still and video applications. Additionally, a full-time manual focus mechanism enables manual fine-tuning of focus at any point, even when the AF system is engaged.

The optical design integrates three low dispersion (LD) elements within its construction to minimize optical aberrations throughout the zoom range, particularly at the longer focal length positions. Individual elements also feature an eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular Dependency) coating, as well as a conventional BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating, in order to reduce lens flare and ghosting to produce more contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery.

Expansive telephoto-zoom lens is well-suited to nature, wildlife, and sports photography and can be used on both full-frame and APS-C DSLR cameras.
Three low dispersion elements are integrated into the front group of the lens construction (two in the first group, one in the third) to effectively compensate for on-axis optical aberrations throughout the zoom range, notably with longer focal length positions.
eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting in order to maintain high contrast, clarity and color fidelity.
VC image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake to enable greater hand-held shooting capabilities in low-light conditions.
A USD autofocus system provides quick, quiet, responsive and accurate focusing performance that is suited to both still image and movie shooting.
A full-time manual focus mechanism allows for manual focusing at any time; even when working in AF shooting modes.
The optimized optical design reduces the movement of lens groups during focusing and zooming in order to maintain a relatively compact and lightweight form-factor.
A redeveloped external finish, with linear patterned zoom and focus rings, enhance the overall handling of the lens as well as its cosmetic appearance.
A nine-blade circular diaphragm produces an aesthetic out-of-focus quality that is especially beneficial when working with selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
A removable tripod mount is included for use of the lens when working from a tripod.

    Tamron 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 reviews

SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens for Canon is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 269.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from not satisfied I had the lens for 1 week and took around 400 images with it.When the focus and VC worked the images in good light were outstanding, with good useable images at 600mm, 100% crop, hand held. Problem was withVC which rarely worked. Image in viewfinder moved about with seldom locking in . Issue confirmed at dealer and also found on a second lens in the store. Highly disappointed but not willing to try a third copy. It took me quite awhile to find this issue in what looked like a competent review on line. Issue was described exactly as I experienced it. QC appears to be an issue here. This is no reflection on BHPhoto and their quality service and reputation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Aviation Photography One of the biggest challenges for a military photographer can be getting good images of aircraft. The Tamron is excellent at getting you closer to the subject while having a quick autofocus to ensure you get the shots you want. The lens is large and heavy, but I find I can shoot with it for extended periods without a tripod without too much fatigue. The shots included were ones that I never could have hoped to capture with our 200mm lens. Out of over 400 images taken during the event these are from, I only deleted a handful for focus issues, and that is impressive considering how much motion was involved.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beyond my highest expectations I was in the market to extend the range of my Nikon D4 and happened on this lens, at first with disbelief because of the reasonable price. Then I read a couple of reviews praising the lens, so put my name on the order list. Four months later it arrived and the results blew me away. Sure it's heavy, but isn't anything in the 600 mm range heavy? Especially with a D4!. It is sharp as a tack, focuses quickly and silently; taking birds in flight is a breeze. I agree in low light it has its challenge, but modern sensors can cope with higher ISO that makes it all work. I have cropped frames down to 1/4 the size and the sharpness is still there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mixed feelings At the price of this lens, I didn't expect that it would compete against the high end primes,. This lens is a little maddening as it could have been a true game changer. I bought it mostly for bird watching / wild life. Stationary birds / objects, I don't think there is a smarter option. Handheld, images are aharp and fantastic. Honestly the best combination or price, size and results. For this use I would recommend it for anyone where this is the primary use. BIF and subjects requiring adaptive auto focus is where this lens suffers. If the autofocus system was better, this would have been a 5 star game changer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent value for the telephoto range!! Was able to finally to get this lens out for a trip in Yosemite and was impressed. It took some high quality images of some wildlife and the setting moon. Ergonomically it is easy to use although the size and weight are substantial (especially for someone who does most of my photography out of a backpack). A am a Canon guy and generally like to use L lenses on my body, but I cant afford Canon products at the 400-600mm range, so went with Tamron. There may be a sacrifice in some quality, but when you consider the sharpness of the images and the subject matter that can be captured at a distance it is totally worth it - really good value

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really good lens! I use this lens for birding. I am a 16 year old aspiring wildlife biologist. Photography is a hobby. I have done photography with Nikon 500mm f4 (Dad's). It was certainly better but this lens is only 5-6% less sharper. It's sweet spot is f8. I have no focusing problems. I always handhold it. It's not really that heavy. The VR function is only useful under 1/800 ,over that it should be switched off. Some tips : 1) Always shoot in good light for details. 2) Keep focus on AF-C. 3) Use tripod collar as support. 4) In low-light use panning. 5) Keep the shutter speed over 1/1000, aperture at 8 and ISO under 400 for best results. 6) While handholding keep your elbow supported on the body. 7) ENJOY!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens Make no mistake, this is a big lens. However, it is very capable of being hand held. The extra reach it has given me is significant. A lot of shots that I couldn't have made before are now within my reach. It is a well built and sturdy lens. The price for what it offers is extremely low compared to its competitors. I did have to do some serious rearranging in my backpack to make room for this lens. It doesn't come with a case and you will need to provide some kind of protection for it. I have found the auto focus to be sufficient for wildlife (both static and in flight). Its not an extremely fast lens so you will need a decent amount of light to get the most out of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what the doctor ordered! I purchased this lens to get closer to my subjects at the local wildlife refuge. It has been a tremendous acquisition. It has given me the reach that I need and the zoom capability to accommodate the wildlife that venture closer to my position. The lens is the heaviest that I have but lighter than any other 600mm option that exists for me. It's not too heavy to handhold, in bright sun, when photographing birds in flight. Having taken a few hundred pictures with this lens, I have to say that I am extremely happy with it's performance and look forward to perfecting my utilization of this very versatile lens.
