Tamron 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

A versatile telephoto zoom for Sony A shooters, the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di USD Lens and Filter Kit from B&H bundles the long-reaching optic with a 95mm UV Haze filter to guard the lens' front element from dust and scratches and also reduce unwanted haze and bluish casts from ultraviolet light.

The SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di USD is a 4x telephoto zoom well-suited for a variety of outdoor, wildlife, and sports shooting applications. The optical design incorporates a trio of low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and individual elements also feature both eBAND and BBAR coatings to suppress flare and ghosting. Additionally, an Ultrasonic Silent Drive benefits fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance and also permits full-time manual focus override for fine-tuning your focus position at any time.

  • Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di USD Lens for Sony

The Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di USD Lens for Sony is an expansive telephoto-zoom lens designed for both full-frame and APS-C-sized image sensors. Its 4x zoom design covers standard telephoto to super telephoto perspectives, making it ideally suited to working with a wide variety of subject matter. A USM (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) autofocus motor provides quick and precise focusing performance, with high torque, low response times, and quiet operation to benefit both still and video applications. Additionally, a full-time manual focus mechanism enables manual fine-tuning of focus at any point, even when the AF system is engaged.

The optical design integrates three low dispersion (LD) elements within its construction to minimize optical aberrations throughout the zoom range, particularly at the longer focal length positions. Individual elements also feature an eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular Dependency) coating, as well as a conventional BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating, in order to reduce lens flare and ghosting to produce more contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery.

Expansive telephoto-zoom lens is well-suited to nature, wildlife, and sports photography and can be used on both full-frame and APS-C DSLR cameras.
Three low dispersion elements are integrated into the front group of the lens construction (two in the first group, one in the third) to effectively compensate for on-axis optical aberrations throughout the zoom range, notably with longer focal length positions.
eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting in order to maintain high contrast, clarity, and color fidelity.
A USM autofocus system provides quick, quiet, responsive and accurate focusing performance that is suited to both still image and movie shooting.
A full-time manual focus mechanism allows for manual focusing at any time; even when working in AF shooting modes.
The optimized optical design reduces the movement of lens groups during focusing and zooming in order to maintain a relatively compact and lightweight form-factor.
A redeveloped external finish, with linear patterned zoom and focus rings, enhance the overall handling of the lens as well as its cosmetic appearance.
A nine-blade circular diaphragm produces an aesthetic out-of-focus quality that is especially beneficial when working with selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
A removable tripod mount is included for use of the lens when working from a tripod.

  • B+W 95mm UV Haze SC 010 Filter

The B+W 95mm UV Haze SC 010 Filter is a general use, clear filter designed to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. Aside from the reduction of unwanted blue casts, no additional coloration or contrast is created, and adjustments to exposure are not required while using this filter. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing over 98% light transmission, each glass surface includes one layer of anti-reflection coating.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features an F-Pro brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

This UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Such filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your front lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

    Tamron 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 reviews

SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di USD Lens for Sony is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 53.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens for the money After lot of hesitation i bought this lens as I wanted to travel light for bird photography to costa rica This lens did not disappoint me. First the weight makes it an ideal lens to travel with given the focal length. Autofocus though not very fast is accurate and the images are tack sharp and contrasty. In good light the autofocus speed increases but still for whatever reason it prefers to focus on distant subjects more than nearer ones. I have not tested this for birds in flight except humming birds and for them it worked fine. Image quality at all focal length is acceptable for most of the work including print publication.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first telephoto lens and I'm already blown away I've been a photography hobbyist for a few years now, and this is my first jump to a proper telephoto lens. Plus it was on sale, so that helped me decide to buy it. The lens is nice, and still getting used to the weight. Weighing in just over 4lbs, its taking a lot of practice using it handheld, so I'm on a monopod mostly, especially for longer shots. The auto-focus is pretty fast, but is a bit slower at longer focal lengths. The auto-focus works well, as I get nice, sharp images. There is no vibration control in the lens, as this is built into the body of my Sony A77ii. I'm sure once I use it more I will get even better shots, but so far, its really nice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Infinitely more usable than my Canon 500 mm f/4 Using the Tamron with Sony A7R II for birds and nature. I think this is a great combination. My normal birding rig is Canon 1D Mk IV with Canon 500 mm f/4 along with a 1.4x II extender. This lens is a little slower but with the Canon rig + extender, the aperture is f/5.6. The Tamron at 600 mm is f/6.3, a third stop slower. I'm not getting the +900mm as I do with the Canon rig but at 42 Mb of resolution, I can crop more than what I lose to the Canon set-up. I can also set the crop factor up to 1.5 on the Sony if I want to shoot with 18 Mb JPEG but no need to do that with 42 Mb and RAW. Not as weather proof as the big 500 but so versatile, I take the Tamron and Sony everywhere, even to 49'ers football game. Try that with the big white lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value and great performance. Purchased this lens last December taking advantage of rebates and special offers. While not cheap this lens offers an incredible value for the money. Being my first really long zoom lens, (70-200 longest previously used) a long learning curve was expected to get really good results. To my surprise I was able to get some really good shots on my first outing with this lens on a dark overcast winter day. Like any new lens I performed a fine focus adjustment to insure the lens and focusing system were in sync, this lens required no adjustment and focused accurately as delivered. This is the only lens in my collection to do this. Overall highly recommended. After three months of use Im very confident using this lens and get very consistent results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from INCREDIBLE VALUE As an engineering forensics specialist my main requirement was for a lens that provide high levels of detail in highly variable lighting conditions. In all aspects this lens exceeds all my expectations. It remains sharp throughout the aperture range. Optically it compares well with the likes of a Zeiss 135mm (I know this is not really a fair comparison - but it gives you an idea). As it is a long lens it remains sensitive to vibration and movement. As I shoot mainly at 300mm - 600mm I mount the lens on a Manfrotto MVA513WK Sympla support system. This is essential as I often work in very inclement weather and low or difficult lighting conditions that necessitate long exposures. It performs equally well on A77 as well as A900 bodies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens Birding is my main interest with photography and I tried to get by with my 300mm Sony but I was continually frustrated. I tried the Sony 70-400 telephoto but was disappointed with the results at the far end of the focal length. I looked at the Sigma and this Tamron for a long time then when Tamron went on sale I decided to go for it. I am thoroughly pleased with this lens. It does everything I want a lens like this to do and focus is sharp as a tack on the long end. A big plus is shooting hand held which gives me as good a results as shooting with a tripod. It isn't so heavy either that it can get tiring, but I am 6'0 and 200 pounds and work out regularly. In sum, I recommend without hesitation. FYI, I use it with a Sony A99 and a Sony A65,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loads of fun I've been using an old Minolta 2.8 300mm G with a 2x. The Minolta produces beautiful images, but the auto focus is relatively slow, noisy, tends to hunt a lot, and the lens weighs a ton. The Tamron lens is relatively light and the auto focus motor is silent, fast and tends to find focus in more situations. I also have a Sony (rebranded Minolta) 70-400mm G. The 70-400 is often considered one of the best lenses available and it does produce spectacular images, but it is heavier and doesn't have the reach. While the Tamron doesn't produce quite the same quality image, the images are very good and the combination of weight and reach means that I'll get a lot of shots that I would miss with the other lenses. The Tamron is easily worth the cost and will likely become my regular lens when I'm out to take wildlife pictures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tamron 150-600 + Sony a7rii, Great Combo! I use this lens mainly for wildlife, and I am repeatedly amazed at the results. I seldom use a tripod and I often shoot at fairly low shutter speeds, and the results are still very good to excellent. The Sony version of this lens does not have stabilization, but since my a7rii has stabilization inside that is not an issue for me.
