Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Featuring a favorite lens for wedding, event, and sports photographers, the Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Lens and Filter Kit from B&H pairs the Nikon F mount lens with a 77mm UV Haze filter to guard the lens' front element from dust and scratches and also reduce unwanted haze and bluish casts from ultraviolet light.

The SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD lens is a versatile portrait-length-to-telephoto zoom characterized by its bright, constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. The optical design incorporates four low dispersion elements and one extra-low dispersion element to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for notable clarity and apparent sharpness. Benefitting the optical attributes is an apt Ultrasonic Silent Drive motor that provides fast, near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. This Nikon F mount version sees the inclusion of Vibration Compensation image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld and tracking shooting. Additionally, this lens also sports a moisture-resistant construction to support working in harsh environments.

  • Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Zoom Lens for Nikon

The Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Zoom Lens for Nikon is a high-speed standard to telephoto zoom lens with a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range. Designed for full-size SLR and DSLR cameras, it offers superior image quality accentuated by advanced Vibration Compensation (image stabilization) and an Ultrasonic Silent Drive Motor for quiet, smooth and precise autofocus.

A new optical design for this popular focal length zoom delivers high contrast and high resolution throughout the zoom range and one Extra-low Dispersion element with four Low Dispersion elements minimize chromatic aberrations. A circular diaphragm that retains its round shape even when taken down two stops from f/2.8 offers expressive background blurring.

A compact build with large focus and zoom rings and a moisture resistant construction, this lens comes with a removable tripod collar and a petal-type lens hood.

    Vibration Compensation
VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization mechanism which reduces the effects of camera shake to deliver sharp images in low light and at slower shutter speeds. It is a newly developed three coil system that employs a lighter moving coil mechanism which contributes to its improved performance and overall compact design.
    Ultrasonic Motor
USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) Motor is the power for a fast and quiet autofocus drive that works in harmony with continuous manual focus mechanism.
    XLD and LD Optics
One special XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) and four LD (Low Dispersion) elements minimize chromatic aberrations.
    Multi-layer Coating
Tamron's advanced multi-layer coating technology dramatically improves lens performance by reducing flare and ghosting for crisper, clearer images.
    Moisture Resistant
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens.
    Compact Design
Improvements in the lens' Vibration Compensation system and a new overall design keep this 70-200mm lens slightly smaller than others in its class. Diameter is 3.37"(85.8mm) and length is 7.4" (188 mm).
    Tripod Collar and Lens Hood
A rotatable, removable tripod collar comes with this lens and allows for stable, balanced tripod mounting, and a matched petal-type lens hood is also included.

Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 reviews

SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Zoom Lens for Nikon is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 132.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Amazing Lens!! I don't normally write reviews about things I buy but this lens deserves a mention!! I was at a crossroads with my photography, not sure wether to by a new Body, new Lens or what to improve as a Photographer and after weeks of research I decided to invest in this lens as this would be the most useful for my needs and my budget. I am not going to go into all the technical jargon about this lens but what I will say is that lens is really amazing with really sharp images, really fast focusing, great out of focus backgrounds. An all round, well built versatile lens that will be in my camera bag for a long time!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally I made the choice! For the past three years I have wanted a 70 to 200 Nikon lens. Like many of you are probably doing, I researched and read and talked and asked until I wore myself out! With the $100 rebate and recommendations from a professional photographer who endorses how well made these Tamron lenses are, I made the leap. Now just to be clear, I am an amateur photographer with a small studio in my home who enjoys taking photos of grandchildren. But I love this lens and my best advice is to get over the notion that it has to be a Nikon brand only I certainly wallowed iin that trap. Just buy it you'll be glad you made the choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! This lens is sharp! Just purchased and received this lens from B&H(B&H is awesome BTW).I purchased Tamron's 24-70 VC last year and wanted to get the 70-200 VC to go along with it. I went outside and snapped a couple quick shots of my dog to try it out. I was awestruck at how sharp this bad boy is. You can literally make out some of the individual hairs from her coat. The background was very nice and creamy as well. I've never shot with the Nikon/Canon 70-200 2.8 lenses, but just cannot image how it could be much better, especially for the price difference. If your looking for a 70-200 2.8 lens then I can certainly recommend this Tamron beauty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would recommend this lens to anyone. I am a military photographer and I do photography on the side for a little extra income. I love this lens. I have had it for a couple of weeks and it performs great. At work I use the Nikon 70-200mm lens and I wanted it for my personal use as well but I couldn't spend that kind of money on it. I went with the Tamron instead and I took one photo with it and looked at my wife and said I'm in love. She laughed. After playing with it on our family vacation in Tennessee I can say it is as good as the Nikon 70-200mm I use at work. Great lens. (FYI I shoot with a D800 at work using the Nikon 70-200mm VR AF-S GII and a D7100 at home using the Tamron 70-200mm VC.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens! I purchased the Tamron f/2.8 70-200mm lens for my D600 instead of the Nikon f/2.8 offering to save some money. I couldn't be happier! The initial shots taken with this lens proved to be razer sharp. The auto focus was quick to lock on my subjects, even when going after fast moving R/C aircraft against a clear blue sky. There was slight vignetting at 200mm, especially noticable when shooting against a clear blue sky. However, Photoshop CS6 has this lens correction profile, which of course completely removed the vignetting. I would highly recommend this lens. I had enough money left over to put towards a nice wide angle zoom lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Lens Nice Lens, but heavy. I borrowed a friend's old Nikon 80-200 f2.8 AF (not D). This is sharper. This one is also easier to manual focus than the Nikon. I have a Tamron 1.4x teleconverter. When attached to the 1.4x, the AF of the Tamron doesn't work. The Tamron AF is very good. I have a Tamron 90mm 1:1 macro. The macro doesn't have VC. This lens is macro but not 1:1. The VC on this lens is useful to have when hand holding a macro shot. I took the picture of the dragonfly by hand holding with VC. I tried get closer with the 1.4x and 90mm 1:1 macro but with out the VC, it didn't come out so well because the angle of the shot made it hard to hold the camera steady.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome quality When I purchased this lens, I was upgrading from a Nikon 80-200 2.8 (The old push/pull model). The Tamron is far sharper and much quieter. It focuses faster and has been an all around awesome lens for me. For some reason, I've found the lens hood a tad tricky. Even though I line up the dots, sometimes it doesn't seem to catch the threads right and lock in place. I feel this is simply due to the size of the lens hood and it's something I need to get used to. I found the size and weight of this lens to be equivalent of my 80-200 so it hasn't required any getting used to. I've also found that the Vibration Control is pretty outstanding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really good value I used this lens for a few events. I can't think of anything negative about it. It focuses quickly and accurately, and it's super sharp. It also focuses really well in low light (I can't say if it's quicker or slower than the Nikon version though). I've used both Nikon 70-200mms, (the older version and the newer one), and I really can't tell much of a difference in terms of sharpness and overall quality. They both perform really well. The build quality is also really good, although I don't think it's weather sealed. For $600 less than the Nikon version, I think this lens is a really good value.
