Synology DS216 Overview

With two storage bays, the DiskStation DS216 NAS Enclosure from Synology is capable of housing two 3.5"/2.5" SATA II/III drives for a total storage capacity of up to 16TB. At the core, this NAS comes with a DiskStation Manager web-based operating system, 1.3 GHz Marvell Armada 385 processor, and 512MB of DDR3 RAM. This combination of performance allows the NAS to run smoothly and manage your drives. Once drives are installed, you may configure them in a RAID 1 array that delivers read and write speeds of up to 111 MB/s.

Synology has equipped this enclosure with a Gigabit Ethernet port for sharing data with connected users on the local network. In addition, a single USB 2.0 port and two USB 3.0 ports enable you to transfer data to and from devices such as thumb drives and external drives. For wireless access, an optional wireless dongle grants Wi-Fi network connectivity.

Once the DS216 is up and running, you can easily manage your files from a broad array of devices using cross-platform synchronization. With apps designed for your iOS and Android mobile devices, it is easy to back up photos and videos, stream multimedia content, and more. Additionally, the DS216 features DLNA support making it easy to stream multimedia content to DLNA compatible devices such as smart TVs, game consoles, and more.

Dual-Core Processor with Floating-Point Unit
The DS216 delivers an average of over 111 MB/s reading and writing speeds under RAID 1 configuration in a Windows environment. The built-in floating-point unit enhances the overall capability of the main CPU, and is particularly advantageous in speeding up thumbnail creation when uploading large amounts of photos or videos.
Hardware Encryption Engine
The hardware encryption engine offloads encryption calculation tasks away from the main CPU, which allows the processor to handle other important tasks. When compared to the DS214, the DS216 has a 50% increase in encryption reading speed and an over 110% increase in encryption writing speed.
Easy Installation
Hot-swappable drive trays and easy installation ensure easy maintenance and continuous service uptime should a hard drive need replacement. In addition, the DS216 introduces a USB copy button for easy data transmission.
USB 3.0 Ports
The DS216 sports two USB 3.0 ports that connect to various kinds of external storage devices and offer fast and efficient file transfer speeds. USB 3.0 technology offers transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbps, which is about 10 times faster than USB 2.0, meaning less time needed to transfer data to external hard drives while consuming less power.
Four-Levels of Brightness for Front LEDs
Equipped with adjustable LED indicators, the front LEDs can provide comfortable light levels by letting you control and schedule the indicators' level of brightness accordingly to environmental needs.
DiskStation Manager Operating System
Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) is a browser-based operating system that makes managing your Synology NAS a breeze. Featuring an intuitive user interface, DSM makes accessing and sharing your data smarter and simpler. Synology's Package Center lets you download and install useful add-on packages designed specifically for individual or business needs, meaning you can enjoy more entertainment in your life or better productivity at work.
All-in-One Server
The DS216 can function as multi-function server. You can set it up as a directory server that provides LDAP service, while DNS and DHCP packages allow you to host a domain name server and automate network IP assignment. With Synology's Proxy Server, you can regulate content access and monitor who can access which website while saving bandwidth. You can host up to 30 websites with Web Station, safeguard the office environments with Surveillance Station, send and receive mails using your own email domain with Mail Station, share printing capability with Printer Server, make DS216 act as a VPN server to access company's resources remotely, and more.
Backup Solution
The Synology DS216 can serve as a centralized backup target. Whether you are a Windows or Mac user, you can back up everything on your computer directly to the Synology NAS using Cloud Station, which syncs files across multiple devices, allowing users at different locations to share the same information in real time. Whenever you modify a file, the changes are backed up to the DS216 automatically. Mac users also experience native Apple Time Machine support. You can also back up data from your DS216 to another DiskStation, rsync servers, external drives, or even online storage websites. "Backup & Replication" allows you to schedule backup tasks and restore the server to any particular point in time, while minimizing storage consumption and processing time by saving only the specific data block that has been changed between versions.
Eco-Friendly NAS Server
The DS216 only consumes 7.2W in HDD Hibernation and 15.48W in access. With a special fan and a smart airflow design, the DS216 keeps the system running cool 24/7, while its noise dampening design makes it quieter than PC counterparts.
