Canon 20mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Offering an impressively wide field of view, the EF 20mm f/2.8 USM from Canon is a well-corrected wide-angle prime also featuring a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture and sophisticated optical design. Four aspherical elements are featured, to limit spherical aberrations and distortion, and two Super UD elements are also used to reduce color fringing for greater clarity. A Super Spectra coating has been applied, too, in order to minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity. Complementing the optical traits is a ring-type USM for quick and quiet autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, and a floating rear focusing group helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.

Ultra-wide 20mm f/2.8 prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 32mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also permits working with shallow depth of field techniques.
Four aspherical elements limit distortion and spherical aberrations in order to realize greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
Two Super Ultra-Low Dispersion elements minimize color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Floating rear focusing system maintains image quality throughout the focusing range.

    Canon 20mm f/2.8 reviews

EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Lens is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 136.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Whats With All The Bad Reviews? I am a photo journalist for a weekly newspaper. I use this lens on a 7D and have had nothing but great shots come out of it.I bought this lens and a Zeiss 21mm at just about the same time. While the Zeisss is a beautiful piece and takes super sharp photos, I just can't justify the money. It was not $1000+ better than the Canon 20mm and the lack of auto focus really limited the amount of situations I could use it in. If i was shooting in a studio or landscapes only. The Zeiiss would win hands down but in real world situations the Canon 20mm does the trick for me and unlike the Zeiss I am not going to cry or kill myself if it, god forbid gets dropped or stolen.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, Underrated lens! There are a lot of bad reviews about this lens. It does have it's flaws, but overall it is great wide angle lens for the price. I was in the market for as wide of a lens as I could find around the $500 price mark. And this what I took a risk after reading multiple bad reviews. It has really harsh vignetting to it. Mainly more wide open aperatures. Although this is fixable in post pretty easily. It also soft on the edges any stop lower than f/3.5. Overall, would definitely recommend as a good wide, stopped down option. I've used it for weddings, landscape and general use when need of a wide and have great images come out of it paired with a 6D and 5Diii.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value This was a great value for what i wanted. I started using it on my rebel XT, because it was 2.8 and a really wide angle. I don't really buy many EF-S lens because I knew I would eventually move to full frame. The images are really nice and sharp with good contrast. I didn't notice any Vignetting until I did move to a full frame 5D mark II. Bringing the aperture up a few stops controls this only draw back. (and of course fixing it in post) This really is a nice lens and I would highly recommend to any one looking for a sharp, fast, wide angle EF lens.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Great, but better than the alternatives. Vignettes badly at f2.8 and f4. Corners not sharp at all at f2.8 and f4. Good central sharpness at f4, f5.6 and f8. Corners ok at f5.6, slightly better at f8. Nice modeling effect and bokeh quality at f5.6 and f8. Looks worse at f11 and smaller stops - diffraction? Distortion is much less than any of the zoom alternatives. Color rendition and contrast are good at f5.6 and f8. Not a good reputation, so very inexpensive second-hand. For extreme-wa shots at f5.6 or f8 it does the job, better to have than have not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EF 20mm f/2.8 great buy! I absolutely love this lense. It is just wide enough that it doesn't distort my image quality, yet is very versatile. I use it for landscape shots around NYC and have already printed multiple images. I saw alot of reviews saying that this lense distorts the corners and creates a silhouette effect on the edges, but hey, I quite like that! It works when you have that mindset in mind, takes away from post work. For the price it is a very good buy, even though there is no IS, use this lense in daylight or on a tripod at darker hours and you will get great results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens It feels very well constructed just like all Canon USM lenses. The auto focus is super quite and fast even while taking follow skateboarding shots. it is also quite consistent in how it's pictures turn out. i have used it a little for video which is mainly what i got this lens for a video im doing in the coming months we will see but i dont expect it to be bad by any means. If you are looking for a wide angle lens dont buy a zoom get a prime! also i didn't realize that it had such a small minimum focusing distance i have gotten some cool shots because of that. but i guess as a low note i wish canon had made this like a 2.2 or a 2.0 since it is kind of mid range expensive but i love it none the less

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Panned by the press, So what? Have had this lens since the mid 1990's when the street price was high. Yes there is corner falloff and vignetting in a 5D MKll, so what shoot around those limitations and you have one fine lens. Stacking filters is not a good idea. I get tack sharp results very fast autofocus, great low light performance and you can stick it in someones face and get a nice shot that isn't so exagerated that it looks comic book. Takes great close ups with great depth of field. I recommend that anyone who has difficulty first try the autofocus lens compensation on the 5DMKll and see if that helps. I have used this on three other APS Canons also several film EOS's(remember film) with equally nice results You also may want to use the 10-22 ES for even better results..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected. Based on the mixed reviews I should have been somewhat dissapointed by this lens. Not at all. I gave up my Canon 17-40L lens to switch to this on and I have not regretted it at all. Although lacks the comfort of a zoom lens, the quality of picture will surpass the ones yielded by lenses twice as expensive as this one. The lens has the feel and quality similar to the 50 mm F1.4 one.
