Angler Port-a-Cube overview

  • 1Description

The 28" Port-a-Cube LED Light Tent is a portable lighting solution for small products, art objects, cataloging, record keeping and ecommerce. Like a miniature studio, the Port-a-Cube folds flat when not in use and assembles quickly via touch-fasteners at its edges. The interior is textured, reflective silver to evenly distribute the light from 150 daylight-balanced LEDs located at the top of the Cube. A diffuser is included for even softer light. Windows at the top and front provide a variety of angles for the camera, while black, white and gray backgrounds are included for the best complement to your subject. There's even a chroma green background for those who want to drop in their own background digitally via chroma key. The Port-a-Cube is ready for worldwide use thanks to its 85-265 VAC, 50/60 Hz multi-voltage power supply.

    Angler Port-a-Cube reviews

Port-a-Cube LED Light Tent (28") is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't quite do the job I was looking for a light tent to provide even lighting for photographing smaller items with glossy or reflective finishes. I researched the various possibilities, then spoke with a B&H sales associate about my short list. He recommended the Angler unit for my needs. The unit itself seems sturdy and folds up into a nicely flat package. It can be assembled fairly quickly, although it is probably a bit slower process than some of the other styles of light tents. It will also likely be heavier than some of those other solutions (talking the tents only) if weight is a consideration. The backgrounds are a vinyl type of material, so the wrinkles that can be experienced with cloth backgrounds are not an issue here. You'll probably have to be careful not to crease these backgrounds, but that shouldn't be too difficult to accomplish. The LED light source built into the top of the tent was one of the attractions of the Angler unit because of its convenience. It ultimately is also it's downfall. My experience with this unit was mixed. It generally provided all around lighting of the subject, but the built-in LEDs created hotspots on them as well. Exactly the issue I was trying to solve by getting a light tent. Angler provides a material diffuser panel, but this did little toresolve the hotspot issue. The LEDs are just too bright a point source of light for the diffuser to be effective, especially since it sits very close to the LEDs. One other concern I had about the LEDs is they seemed to generate a fair amount of heat. I didn't keep them turned on long enough to know whether that would cause a heat issue inside the tent, but it's something to be aware of. I ultimately ended up returning this light tent. That turned into a less than positive experience when the RMA not only did not include the return postage, but it cost $52 to return this product. Certainly it didn't cost B&H anywhere near this much to send the item through the same carrier. So buyer beware if you're not positive this is the unit for you. I'm also disappointed in the advice I received from the B&H sales associate. It's apparent he was not familiar with this product, since the hotspot issue noted above is plainly obvious if you've seen the unit. Had he been able to communicate that issue, I would have gone with a different product and not incurred the huge return expense of the Angler. Whether the replacement light tent I purchase comes from B&H remains to be seen, since this has been a less than positive customer experience. The concept of the Angler is an interesting one and would certainly be convenient if the lighting source were more diffuse. Having the LEDs edge light a panel (much like done for the backlight of LCD displays) rather than light the interior directly would likely reduce or eliminate the hotspot issue. Maybe a future generation of the product will incorporate improvements along those lines.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for Product Photography This is a great light tent for those who want to be able to photograph products without the need to invest in additional lights. The built-in LED lights provide good lighting for items. The included vinyl backgrounds are perfect and very sturdy. Vinyl is much sturdier than paper, won't need to be replaced and can be cleaned very easily. This tent is a good size and also folds to be stored easily when not in use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poor man's studio These light tents are usually advertised as being most useful for product photography- meaning man made objects. I'm going to try it out on natural subjects however, such as flowers. Have only had time for one such picture so far, but it came out pretty nice. Maybe not as good as a true studio lighting setup would be but close enough for me- and at a much more reasonable price than studio lighting equipment would be. The box sets up quickly and easily and comes with a diffuser to soften the effect and four different background sheets. The real reason for buying it was to simply give me one more way to have fun taking pictures. For this reason alone it was worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT - EXCELLENT This Port-A-Cube LED Light Tenet is outstanding. Extremely easy to use. Portable, light weight and comes with 4 different color backdrops. I also purchase the 17 unit as well. Excellent piece of equipment for photographing products for display purposes or even green screen application.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from sort of a cheap solution, ok for the money for the money, it does light up, however, you can't adust brightness other than clipping in vellum. and the system they have to velcro in the seamless is awful. you will want to get clips to hold that, or any background in, more securely. but if you need a cheap way to shoot tabletop and get lights all in for 100, you can't complain. for the money it's a reasonable solution.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great item but... I loved the compact size and the light is so bright. Only the background does not fit in the slot flat, and creates a wave that projects a shadow. I am still trying to figure this out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple, easy to use. Some limitations, but still quite good I like the design in terms of how it sets up and breaks down. The LED array on top provides fairly even top lighting on non-reflective surfaces and textures. For shiny plastic and metal there are hot spots that can't be eliminated, even with the use of the supplied diffusion material. It would be great if the tent had openings or the ability to remove the side panels and somehow insert alternative lighting for a wider variety of product photography. Of the supplied background inserts, I found the white to be most usable with the best results. Without the ability to control the light, the darker backgrounds just show too much gradation, hot spots and show a line across the background sweep. Having said all that, I think that this tent is great for pumping out shots for eBay or shooting volume where the idea is to have a well lit representation of a product on white and not the ultimate or most creative lighting. It does that very well. There's an opening on top which I like for shooting magazines, comics, trading cards, and other 2D items. Shooting from above makes that easy and fast with the camera mounted on a tripod, refocusing and using a remote shutter release.
