Not good aspect on Laserdisc

As is often a problem with composite video, the image gets stretched on widescreen as if it's displaying on a 4:3 television. My tv won't allow adjustment for this even though it's running through HDMI and the upscaler has no aspect ratio capabilities. Thus, a film that is already widescreen but gets stretched even further. Not a bad product, but not good for old movies from what I can tell. I wouldn't recommend it.

I tried going cheap at first, that didn't work out...

You usually get what you pay for, and the KanexPro works quite well. The original $15 piece of garbage I bought went straight back to the ebay seller, but this converter works great. The only improvement might be a slide switch for the composite/s-video selector as it seems to default back to composite mode after each cold boot.

Needed a replacement for my 10 year old Stellar Labs scaler

I bought this to replace my failed stellar labs hdmi scaler. It's tiny compared to the 17 inch wide box that I used to use. I only used the s-video port on it , so this works perfectly.

Once again, I'm more than pleased with my B&H experience. John was incredibly helpful in figuring out what I needed to do to connect my VCR to my home theater system. This converter was easy to install, and it works perfectly. I am so thrilled to be able to watch my videos!

Very useful little box for old media devices!

Even though this box does not utilize 4k resolution it does make older devices work with Brand New 4k devices. I am very impressed how this box works right straight from the factory. I know there are others complaining about the quality, but quite frankly It's very good for getting older devices working on a newer 4k monitor. Best of all is using this box with S-Video output from an older DVD player! IF your not super picky about Ultra High definition then you may like it? For me this is a perfect fit and for the money I am very pleased with the results!

Im looking to convert vhs and supervhs old tapes to digital HD. Would you recommend this unit combined with what HDMI Capture device?
Asked by: Curt
yes the combination will work, but please note it will not improve the resolution of your original media (VHS/s-VHS) it will only convert the analog signal to digital

question

I just got an apple tv but my tv is old and only takes svideo cables. the apple tv uses an hdmi cable and i was wondering if this product would allow me to connect the two for it to work?
Asked by: Anonymous
I'm afraid not, this converter actually goes in the opposite direction then what you need. You would need a converter that can turn an HDMI signal in to an S-Video signal, that converter must also be HDCP compliant. The Avenview HDMI Down Converter to Composite and S-Video, B&H #AVCPROHDMCVI, is the adapter you will need. It even has an Apple Mode switch that gives you the HDCP compliance required to use an Apple TV or other Apple devices.

What video capture software does this work best with? I'm on a Mac. Thanks.
Asked by: Adrian
I really don't know. Call the manufacturer they should know. I used it on my Old Plasma TV which had a resolution 750(not 1080 or 4K).

question

Does it do scanline doubling? My input to the device would be 240p s-video that needs scanline doubling to produce the full image when output at higher resolution.
Asked by: Anonymous
This product does offers an S-Video Input and will allow that signal to be up-scaled for viewing on a 4K TV through HDMI.

question

If a 4:3 aspect ratio composite video signal is input, will the 4:3 aspect ratio be preserved when the hdmi output is displayed on a modern monitor, or is the image stretched to 16:9 aspect ratio?
Asked by: Ian F.
Sorry i did not tested this setup. I do think it will keep 16:9 ratio. (I think...)

question

New mac book pro, USB 3, and hdmi inputs, will this unit read the file so I can save the videos to a back up drive?
Asked by: jim
This is an converter, not a capture device. It will not allow you to capture S-Video footage to save on a computer with a USB 3.0 port. For that you would need a capture device like the Elgato Systems USB Analog Video Capture Device, which works with Mac computers. https://bhpho.to/2D52zMs
