Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm f/4 IS PRO Overview

By B&H Photo's

A long-reaching super telephoto for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm f/4 IS PRO from Olympus is a 600mm equivalent lens that balances refined optics with a hand-holdable design. Super ED, E-HR, and HR glass elements are combined to control both chromatic and spherical aberrations to provide a high degree of clarity and sharpness, and a Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual elements to suppress lens flare and ghosting for high contrast, color-accurate imaging.

Complementing the optical attributes, this lens is also characterized by its optical image stabilization system, which can be used in conjunction with camera-based sensor-shift IS to realize a six-stop effective reduction in the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system is also employed to realize quick and quiet focusing performance, and a manual focus clutch enables seamless switching between focusing methods for more intuitive use. The lens is also fitted with a removable rotating tripod collar for improved balance and support, and the lens is weather-sealed to guard against dust, moisture, and freezing temperatures to benefit working in harsh climates.

Super telephoto prime is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 600mm equivalent focal length.
Three Super ED (extra-low dispersion) elements are used to control color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three high refractive index elements and one E-HR (extra-high refractive index) element help to minimize spherical aberrations and distortion for greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual elements to significantly reduce lens flare and ghosting to improve contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Lens-based image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to benefit shooting handheld with this lens in difficult lighting conditions. Additionally, this lens supports Synchronized IS, which pairs the optical IS system with select Olympus cameras' 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization to control up to six stops of camera shake.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Manual focus clutch lets you quickly pull the focusing ring into place for direct, intuitive focus control.
Programmable L-Fn (lens function) button for easily accessible settings adjustment.
Dust, splash, and freezeproof construction incorporates 17 separate seals to ensure this lens's performance in inclement conditions and harsh environments.
Removable rotating tripod collar offers a stable platform for working with this lens atop a tripod or monopod. The included DR-79 Decoration Ring can also be used on the lens when shooting handheld to take the place of the removed tripod collar.
Built-in retractable lens hood shields the front lens element to reduce surface reflections and flare.
Compatible with the optional M.Zuiko Digital MC-14 1.4x Teleconverter to further extend the reach to a 840mm equivalent focal length.

Haven't used my Sony A7IV/600mm setup since I got this lens for my OM1! Nothing short of amazing!

This is a jewel!

This lens is simply a jewel. Wide open with the MC-14 extender - this lens is not only tack sharp but it also resolves every minute detail from the sensor. I have the 75-300m f4.8-6.7II lens which is wonderfully small and light - however although it is also sharp - it does not resolve as much detail as the 300mm f4 Pro lens. As I reviewed my first shot with this lens on my OM1- I was shocked at difference in resolution compared to my 75-300mm and my 40-150mm f2.8 with the MC-14 extender (which needs to be stopped down to f5.6 to get critically sharp shots.) I will say it again - not only is this lens sharper wide open than any other lens mentioned but it resolves far more detail. An astonishing jewel of a lens. The build quality is exceptional. The IBIS is very good. Fast to focus. Ergonomics are fantastic because the focus ring is positoned exactly where I naturally place my hand on the lens barrel. I bought this second hand from BHPhoto. It was rated at 9+ but which looks like an open box product. Highly recommended.

with the MC-20, fantastic birding setup

i confess i only shoot this with the 2x teleconverter. i find the keeper rate higher than the olympus 100-400mm, IF i can acquire the subject. despite the difficulty in spotting subjects, i vastly prefer having the 300mm with TC on when birding.

Superb bird & wildlife lens

I purchased this to go with my E-M1X. The Zuiko 300 is an outstanding bird lens -- equivalent to 600mm in FF, and fast enough to allow you to work with the shutter speeds needed for birds in flight. Edge-to-edge sharpness is excellent even at f/4 (let's face it, you'll be using that aperture a lot), and there's little chromatic aberration. The clutch for manual focus is a bit clunky; I occasionally pull on that and then wonder why AF isn't working. AF speed with this lens is fine -- it's rare that the lens is making me wait to grab focus on a BiF (almost always on me instead!). As many note, one important feature is the weight and balance of the lens. One can easily handhold the combo of the 300 and M1X for sustained periods, even with smaller hands. I also use the combo with a monopod. The days of birding with a tripod are just about done! Combining this lens with an M1///, which I've also done, leaves that combination a bit front-heavy; you'll definitely want a hand under the lens hood when hand-holding. The lens works very well with the 1.4x and 2x tele-converters; balance and weight distribution hardly changes, and the image remains bright enough in the viewfinder. I attach one photo done at f/5.6.

5 Star Lens, 3 star Amateur Photographer

After a lot of soul searching I bought the 300mm prime to support my amateur surf photography habit. It's a beauty but will take time and practice to master - I'm so used to the 40-150 pro zoom (+ MC adapters) that a fixed 300 is a very different experience. I've been using focus tracking on my EM1m2, which can wander a bit (apparently the new OM-1 has improved performance?) but when I occasionally lock on target at the right time I really like the results. Note to OM systems - it's great that you're got bird photographers and other sports covered, but it would be a big help for us West Coast dwellers if you could point the AI developers at the beach for a few weeks when the surf is up :-)

This lens is sharp as a tack on the OM-1. I bought this lens and camera in lieu of a RF 600 /f4. Got the cam and the lens for about a third the price of the Canon RF only. So not I shoot two systems.

Superb wildlife / birding telephoto lens

I'm an advanced amateur wildlife/bird photographer. I moved to Olympus from Canon a year ago for many of the same reasons others, particularly us older photographers, do -- the lighter weight! I shoot the ED 300mm f/4 on either an E-M1/// or E-M1x. In either case, what matters most to me is image quality, and this lens is outstanding: it is sharp edge to edge at f/5.6 and very sharp in the center at f/4. Color is true with very little aberration (fixed in post easily). Focus is outstanding and fast, easily as fast as a Canon 500mm f/4. The lens balances well on either camera body. The manual focus clutch is useful; I do find myself engaging it accidentally occasionally (hint Steve: if you can't focus, check the clutch!). I use both the TC-14 and TC-20 with this lens; with either camera I've noted little if any slow-down with the TC-14 and this lens, and the added reach is useful. With the TC-20 you DO see somewhat slower focus with the 300mm; you won't be nailing birds in flight unless you're already close to locked in. The build quality is excellent. I shoot in bad weather frequently without a cover for the lens and camera, though of course a cover is still a good idea. I point out that the ED 300mm on an E-M1 is about half the weight of a Canon 5D and the equivalent 600mm f/4. Very simply -- I shoot hand-held much of the time, and with a monopod the rest. No more tripod and gimbal for me! I include two images: the elk is done on the E-M1x with the 300 + TC-20, early morning light. Nailed. The sandhill crane in flight is done on the E-M1x with the 300, no TC, hand-held. Nailed. So yes, very, very happy with this lens.

I shoot with the EM-1 so don’t have a hands on answer, although it should be fine. Always use the lens tripod mount. You support the lens with one hand and camera with the other when shooting hand held.

Technically it should work on the Pen F. It is a very new lens and there is not that much information on compatibility. But you will need to go to the Olympus site and get the latest firmware update for the Pen F.
