Sony HDR-AS50 overview

  • 1Description

Whether you adventure takes you above or below the water line, the HDR-AS50 Full HD Action Cam from Sony has you covered. Able to record 1080p60 video in the low-compression XAVC S codec, it is no slouch when it comes to photos either - snapping 11.9MP stills with multiple shooting modes available. The camera is Bluetooth-equipped for app-based monitoring and control. It can also be operated remotely using the separately available watch-style Live-View Remote. Where a Wi-Fi Internet connection is available, you can even stream the action live via Ustream. An ultra wide ZEISS Tessar lens provides an immersive POV feel when in Wide mode and can be set to Narrow to put the emphasis more on the subject. A 197' underwater housing comes standard.

Redesigned User Interface
A new, graphical user interface has been introduced with the HDR-AS50. This simplifies menu navigation, helping you get to the setting you need faster and with less fuss. You can also operate the camera via the PlayMemories mobile app for iOS and Android - even turn the camera on or off
SteadyShot Image Stabilization
Capture steady images even when the going gets rough. The HDR-AS50 features electronic image stabilization to help compensate for camera shake. This means less motion blur in your action
1/2.3" Exmor R CMOS Sensor
The Exmor R image sensor features back-side illumination for reduced noise levels and enhanced low-light performance. A Bionz X processor backs up the sensor by providing the horsepower needed to capture Full HD 60 fps images in the 50 Mbps XAVC S codec
Angle of View Adjustment
Get a different perspective on the world. The HDR-AS50 offers two angle of view settings. A Wide mode for an immersive fisheye effect and a Narrow mode for a tighter framing. In addition, seamlessly adjustable zoom mode enables you to change zooming while shooting.

Time-lapse Capture lets you produce time-lapse movies by using 4K still images shot at designated intervals. Then the Action Cam Movie Creator or Action Cam App simply transform these images into an impressive time-lapse movie

Sony HDR-AS50 reviews

HDR-AS50 Full HD Action Cam is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! Having previously owned the AS10 and AS100 action cams from Sony, I was very happy to see that this model fixed all of the little issues I had with them. The physical size is similar to the AS100 and the video quality is also comparable (ie very good). I love that the flat lens cover is now standard with this model as is a flat bottom to allow me to stand the unit up on its own. I added a bit of rain X for plastic to the front of the lens cover and water literally flies off of this thing. I don't think there will be any more issues with water droplets in my videos anymore. :-) The new menu system is also much more user friendly and easy to learn. So far I am super happy with this purchase and will be giving it a full workout in Hawaii soon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works well under water Wanted to try it out in a local lake before I went on vacation but did not have time. That old camera had a flash and a lcd screen on back, the Sony does not I am hopping it will better low light cape abilities. Did 5 dive total 5 hours under water on one charge of the battery took over 900 photos. As expected photo need color correction and the deeper depth the photo was taken at the poorer it was. Very pleased with photos considering it was less than $200.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent entry level updated Sony action cam I have had this action cam now for about 1 month, here's the summary: PROS - decent video quality compared to GoPro's at 1080p - adjustable angle (field) of view, wide or narrow - SteadyShot stabilization is good for straight forward movement to reduce small vibrations - good quality 4K photos - included waterproof case/flat lens for better underwater videos - better in-camera menus - better button placement than older action cam models -1/4 screw mount easier to use various accessories - nice supported software, works perfectly with my iphone by wifi to see camera preview screen CONS - SteadyShot stabilization causes significant distortions at the lens edges, also some image sharpness loss, and more narrow field of view - no audio with waterproof case - no splashproof protection like the older white colored models - minimum focus distance 11.8in (can't do my close up bird videos) TIPS - get a good quality micro SDXC card that supports write speeds close to 50MBps, in order to save video to better quality XAVC S format. Do your research as some card speeds advertised aren't close to actual speeds. - you can likely increase battery life by turning it to airplane mode (no wifi, bluetooth) - get the free Sony Action Cam Movie Creator to make some neat movies (or Davinci Resolve for Mac)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice little camera with not-so-great optional software Several factors led to my choice of purchasing three of this model of camera, primarily the small size, included weatherproof housing, and most importantly, the ability to control multiple cameras simultaneously through Sony's separate software app. Each camera has now been used for about 20 hours of use, in a variety of locations, for capturing a dog sport called K9 Nose Work. So, a few thoughts about usage so far.... Video quality - it's about what you'd expect from a camera in this price range. Decent, but not great - good color in brightly lit scenes, and performed surprisingly well as the clouds turned to overcast. Noticeable fisheye distortion, even in the narrow mode, which was a tad disappointing, as narrow mode was a top 5 factor for choosing this cam. Controls - not hard to sort out for a four button camera. Lots of beeping as you change settings, but I think there's a way to turn that off. Camera - well, it's just such a cute little thing! Nice touch that the camera and housing both have 1/4-20 thread mountings built in for tripod use. Lots of doors - one each for charging/USB, battery, and memory card - and they honestly don't feel like they'll stay attached very long. Battery life is good, at 2+ hours of continuous 1080P/30 with wifi off. Software - This is the downfall of this little guy. If you plan to use only one camera remotely controlled, it's great! Set-up, live-view, control options, all are easy. But abandon all hope, ye who want multi-camera control. Sony, it would be nice if you noted in your verified mobile devices list that wifi-only iPads cannot do multi-camera control, as it requires a wifi-hotspot to be set up on the controlling device. After losing a couple of hours to that issue, I moved on to using my Moto G (also on the list). A few more hours of trying to follow Sony's horribly written instructions, I accidentally figured out how to get two of the cameras to simultaneously connect to the phone, but never the third.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for diving The housing that comes with the camera (HDR-AS50) enables taking videos up to 60 meters, enough for any sport diver, the wide angle lens allows capture of the underwater world, in particular big fish without the need to worry about getting closer. Good investment for diving as a starting video camera with good optical quality.
