Canon 400mm f/5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Mixing long reach with a relatively compact and lightweight design, the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM from Canon is a super telephoto L-series prime well-suited for sports and wildlife photography. Its advanced optical design incorporates a pair of low dispersion glass elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve a high degree of clarity, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to maintain contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions. Complementing the imaging attributes, this 400mm f/5.6 also features a ring-type USM to deliver quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control. Additionally, a removable rotating tripod collar is included for stable use of the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Telephoto prime 400mm f/5.6 lens is compatible with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs as well as APS-C models where it will provide a 640mm equivalent focal length.
One Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element and one ultra-low dispersion element greatly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with a rear focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Built-in lens hood prevents stray light from causing ghosting or flare and also protects the front element from accidental impacts or scratching.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

    Canon 400mm f/5.6 reviews

EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 372.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from sleeper telephoto This lens has to be one of the best values at or above 300mm. My first long telephoto and I still use it. No IS and no big aperture, but in daylight you can get some great images. I've captured a number of dragonfly with this lens and honestly I wouldn't use anything else. If I asked canon to change anything about this lens it would be to have a little closer focus. I've thought about having IS on it but honestly one of the reasons it is so sharp is that it does not have too many elements. With modern high ISO/low noise bodies, I think I can live without IS on this lens - it's not too heavy and the most hand-holdable of the super telephotos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Totally Awesome Lens! I have owned and used this lens for about 5 years now and it is almost always on my camera! Sure, it is a bit heavy, but I have no problem walking around all day with it on my camera around my neck. I do a lot of Eagle and wildlife photography, so this lens is a fantastic tool! This lens produces Razor sharp images at every setting from f5.6 to f/32 if you have enough light and a steady hand of tripod. Even indoors at wide open aperture and slow shutter speeds I have been able to take amazing portraits from a distance during Orchestra Concerts using stage lighting. I would and do Highly Recommend this lens to everyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens I do mostly bird photography and used the 100-400 zoom for years, but was never satisfied with the IQ. I was shooting wide-open at 400 most of the time - when that lens is at its weakest. I bought the 500 mm f4 and love it dearly, but it is just to heavy for walk-around birding. After reading a number of reviews I bought the 400 5.6 and couldn't be happier. The IQ IMHO is amazing and rivals the 500. Don't use the extenders (would lose autofocus on the xxD bodies), so it's not for real distance subjects, but I have taken many razor sharp images with this lens and my % keepers is much higher than with the 100-400.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bird lens This is one fine lens. For those wishing to photograph birds this is the lens to start with and keep on using for a long time. With the smaller crop factor sensors on the Rebel series just put the camera on the lens and never take it off. This lens becomes the equivalent of a 640 mm lens on these smaller sensor cameras. For the price and quality, the 400 mm/5.6 is unparalleled. Auto-focus capture is quick and accurate. The only drawback to this lens is that it doesn't have image stabilization, but you really don't need it. The images are tack sharp. This is the best bird lens for the money on the market today.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Real Deal One of the most understated, overachieving performers out there. No IS, no bells and whistles. but absolutely superb image quality. Super sharp, zero discernible CA or flare, beautiful color, excellent bokeh, blazing fast AF. It's always reliable and consistent in terms of IQ, and it blows the 100-400 out of the water wide open at 400mm. Best lens in the world for flying birds. Biggest flaw is the hood. I've had three copies of this lens over 12 years, and the hood got jammed on all, to the point were it caused major problems. Build quality is also a bit dodgy. On two of the three I had the main barrel get loose and wobbly after a couple years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME!!!!!!! I have been taking pictures of sports and wildlife (mainly birds), tack sharp pictures! I have hiked a few miles and taken thousands of pictures within my first month of ownership and have not once been disappointed! The weight is not bad, I am shooting with the 7D and absolutely love this lens! No problems tracking eagles or fast moving objects. I have taken pictures of flowers with incredible bokeh. The built in lens hood is nice and easy to use. The only thing that is not so great is that I didn't buy this lens sooner and that it will not fit in my bag attached to the camera body. Love this lens!!!!! definitely recommend! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens I've owned this lens for over a year now and it's always with me. I live in California and photograph a lot of humming birds, surfers and sunsets, always handheld on my cropped sensor Canon 70d, thus turning this lens into a 640 mm f 5.6 (Usually 1250 sec.1250 Iso) with very little noise. Yes it's light enough to carry and well balanced with attached battery grip. This superb prime lens quietly focuses immediately on whatever you point it at and is tack sharp with beautiful color. I've shopped thru BnH photo since the mid 70's and consider this an exceptional buy for such an unbelievable piece of glass.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for birders! I bought this lens used from B&H and could not be more pleased. I chose it over the Sigma & Tamron 150-600mm zooms because of better image quality and highly positive reviews. Add mine to the list. I'm new to bird photography and have had two outings with the 400. Its autofocus is fast and accurate. Shots are tack sharp. Surprisingly hand-holdable, but for best images, use a tripod. I also got the EF 1.4X extender, which really brings the birds in close. At only f/5.6 max aperture, you'll need bright light and/or a high ISO setting. Nikon doesn't have a 400mm in this price range! For the money, as good a lens as any I've owned. I can't wait 'til my next outing.
