Tokina AT-X 14-20mm f/2 PRO DX Reviews

A hidden gems

This lens isn't famous on reviews or the internet, but this is an amazing lens, super-fast with a fast 2.0 aperture. Love the rendering from this lens. Only drawback is the lens a but big and heavy for APS-C size cameras

Sharper than the 11-20mm

Not sure why everybody prefers the 11-20 that I also own. This 14-20 is faster and sharper. Obviously not quite as wide. Doesn't vignette on a MFT speedBooster like the 11-20 though.

Wife likes it.

Using it for astrophotography, F2 is a good speed. So far so good. Will update review after some landscape sessions

I bought this lens from B & H a few years ago and I was blown away by how sharp this lens is, it's as sharp as some of my Canon L-series lenses are! I suggest you buy it, you'll love it, if you don't then just send it back but I don't think you will.

Tokina 14-20 f2 goodness

I bought this lens mainly for astrophotography on my D7200. 14mm on the crop sensor is not super wide but f2 makes up for it, at least for me. I have found that this lens is also an excellent landscape lens. The small focal range is not as big of a deal as I though it might. The focus ring is kinda quirky, as per a lot of reviews, but I have been using manual focus exclusively and see no issue. Infinity mark is right on the money and accurate focus confirm in viewfinder. For the money, it is an excellent lens that is very sharp, even at f2.

Astro Imaging

I bought this lens for Milky Way imaging and so far doing good. There's very minimal chromatic aberration and minimal coma in the corners but almost gone by 2.8 F. However thus much better than more expensive lenses I have tried before. Would highly recommend for astro imaging over Rokinon though this is more expensive and 14mm vs 12mm for other I used.

Great wide angle

This lens is fast and sharp. I will say the corners you do get some dark shadows. However its clarity and crispness in videos is amazing

Is this lens a good choice for the BMPCC 6K Pro? I am considering this lens or the Tokina 11 - 20mm. The extra 3mm seem to make big difference, but the f2 vs. f2.8 is very compelling as well. From what I've read, the 14 - 20mm is noticeably sharper.
Asked by: Grant
Both lenses are great. The f2 aperture on the 14-20mm can be very helpful however you should also consider the fact that the 11-20mm is a slightly newer lens (2020) that benefits from improved light transmission and better lens coatings that are less likely to flare than the older 14-20mm F2 (2016). Ultimately these lenses are going to be very similar in performance but I recommend the 11-20mm because if you are in a small space and the lens is not wide enough there isn't much you can do about that however if you film something that should have been exposed at F2 but instead exposed for 2.8 you can compensate for that in color grading/editing especially if you plan to film in BRAW or ProRes (of course its always best to get it right in camera if possible).

It can mount on the Canon 5D Mark IV, but this is an APS-C format lens thus it'll crop on that camera.

how is the coma and chroma aberration when used ...

how is the coma and chroma aberration when used wide open at f/2.0 at 14mm for astrophoto ? Is it as good for astro / nightsky /milkyway as the Rokinon/Samyang 16mm f/2.0 ? or is it as bad as the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 ? In other words, if you take a photo of the nightsky at 14mm and f/2.0 , are the stars in the corners sharp dots or do they show lots of flare-looking or lens-shaped coma ?
Asked by: Olivier
Going from reports by others and testing the Tokina AT-X 14-20mm f/2 PRO DX Lens for Canon EF out of those seems to have the least Chr. aberration and the least vignette.

Has anyone used this on a Full-Frame sensor? If so, does vignette disappear around 17mm like it does on the other Tokina 11-20mm?

Using this lens on a full frame Canon sensor would result in vignetting and a reduction in the resolution.

Is this lens for crop sensors only or does it work on full frame? I have an 80D right now and I might get the EOS R so I want to make sure this lens will work with it.
Asked by: NIck
This is a crop sensor lens only (aps-c). It may fit and operate on the EOS R with a lens adapter but you will only use half the sensor on the EOS R giving you about half the resolution.
