Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Offering a natural perspective along with a fast maximum aperture, the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM from Canon is a versatile normal-length prime characterized by its bright f/1.4 aperture to suit working in low-light conditions and for producing shallow depth of field imagery. This lens also features a Gaussian optics design, along with two high refractive index elements, to control spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in difficult lighting conditions. Complementing the optical design is a micro USM, which enables quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control.

Normal prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an 80mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also affords great control over depth of field for isolating subjects and using selective focus techniques.
Gaussian optics design, which includes two high refractive index elements, notably reduces distortion and spherical aberrations for high sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A micro Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

First lens for my Canon 1dx II, the combination in low light is better than I expected. The 1.4 aperture give flexibility but I rarely use it with 1dx auto iso.

I bought the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens as an upgrade from the old Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens I was using. This one has been better, sharper and more crisp. I love it!

Needed a 50mm for my BMPCC6k Pro and I'm happy I chose this lens. There are some beautiful colors and warmth that come from this lens compared to a sigma or other brand. Unfortunately operates as a ~85-100mm because my camera is not full frame, but it's a lovely lens to have in your bag regardless.

Great Lens

We bought a 5D Mark IV used and needed a lens. This was available and we both like 50mm so we picked it up. So far we are both in love with the image quality and versatility. Sometimes the autofocus hunts or misses the target. But in general it's fast and accurate and has helped get great images. It's great in low light and gets sharper if you close it up a bit. So far we have done portraits and people photography as well as a few days wandering around the city. It's lightweight and compact which is nice on such a big camera body. Definitely recommended.

You cannot live without this lens. Hits the sweet spot for build quality and affordability. Do not overlook this one.

Little gem!

This was one od my first lenses bought some 15 years ago and its still in my wedding bag. Its a small gem, weighs nothing and delivers superb quality pics from f2.0-2.2. I had the 50 1.2 but eventually sold it as it was less practical, and my 35 1.4 works better in super low light. I had a chance to compare with the newer 50 1.8 but didn't like the bokeh there, the 50 1.4 delivers dreamy smooth bokeh. If you really need to shoot below f1.8-2.0 then you need to look elsewhere (RF 1.2 or sigma but these are heavy beasts)
