As the flagship model within Nikon's DX-format DSLR line, the D500 is characterized by its robust physical construction, apt imaging capabilities, and of course, a more compact, sleek form factor than its FX brethren. Revolving around a 20.9MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 5 image processor, this camera appeals to both still and video shooters with its fast 10 fps continuous shooting rate and 4K UHD video recording abilities. The sensor and processor also combine to avail a native sensitivity range up to ISO 51200, which can be further expanded to ISO 1640000 for working in dark and difficult lighting conditions. Benefitting the fast shooting performance, the D500 is also characterized by its expansive Multi-CAM 20K 153-point AF system, which features 99 cross-type points for fast performance and accurate subject tracking capabilities. While sleek in stature, the D500 is by no means slim on functionality and versatility.

Besides the imaging assets, this advanced DSLR also features an impressive handling design that incorporates a 3.2", 2.36m-dot, tilting LCD touchscreen, which affords a comfortable means for working from high and low angles. An updated version of SnapBridge is also featured, which provides Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC, as well as Bluetooth Low Energy technology for linking your mobile device for wireless image sharing. In addition to the convenience features, the D500 is housed within a durable magnesium alloy chassis that is both dust- and weather-sealed for working in inclement conditions and harsh environments.

Included with the camera body is the AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR lens, which provides a 24-120mm equivalent focal length range. In addition to the bright maximum aperture range of f/2.8-4, which avails greater control over selective focus and enhanced low-light shooting capabilities, this DX-dedicated zoom also features 4-stop-effective VR with Sports Mode and a Silent Wave Motor for quick AF speeds. The optical design contains three aspherical elements and four extra-low dispersion glass elements for reduced chromatic and spherical aberrations and controlled distortion throughout the zoom range, as well as both Super Integrated and Nano Crystal Coatings to minimize flare and ghosting. Additionally, this zoom also sports fluorine-coated front and rear elements to guard against smudging, moisture, and dirt.

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR Lens

Designed as the DX workhorse, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR from Nikon is a 24-120mm-equivalent zoom, well-suited for a broad range of shooting applications. Its bright f/2.8-4 maximum aperture range benefits working in low-light conditions as well as controlling depth of field for selective focus shooting. Equally impressive, the optical design features four extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements, which help to control both chromatic and spherical aberrations for notable image clarity and sharpness. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are featured, too, and minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when shooting in bright and backlit conditions.

Balancing the optical merits, this 16-80mm is also characterized by its inclusion of a Vibration Reduction image stabilization system that compensates for four stops of camera shake to enable sharper handheld shooting. A Silent Wave Motor also benefits producing sharp imagery, and affords quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens utilizes an electromagnetic diaphragm to ensure consistent exposure stability when shooting at fast continuous speeds.

Standard zoom is designed for DX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs and provides a 24-120mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright f/2.8-4 maximum aperture range suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers greater control over depth of field.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Four extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
Both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to four shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Fluorine coating on the front and rear elements affords protection to the optical system, resists smudging and fingerprints, and is easier to clean.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

I ordered my first Nikon D500 2 years ago & immediately LOVED so many things about it!! I was so excited when it became available again last month & ordered another one. I now shoot weddings with 2 matching systems ~ one with flash for indoor getting ready & reception fun, the other for natural light anywhere I can!

Great for wildlife photography

I upgraded from a NikonD5300 so of course this will seem a lot better. But it is better than expected especially for the price. Using the same lens on my D5300 and this camera, there is a massive improvement for what fits in the frame and clarity. I use it for wildlife photography, mostly birds, and this camera is so quick it catches the birds so well in flight and doing quick movements. The larger range in ISO is also really fun to play with.

Industry standard for sports photography

The Nikon D500 has been a sports photography workhorse for awhile but still beats out newer models for features related to action photography. This is actually my second exact same body so I can shoot with two cameras at various sporting events.

Autofocus is spot on and fast. 10fps is awesome too, I don't think you can beat this camera at the price point.

Best wildlife camera available

The D500 with its 10 fps shutter, optical viewfinder, 100 shot RAW buffer, and great auto focus is a great option for wildlife. I shoot mostly birds and appreciate the "crop factor" even though I know it's mainly an optical "illusion" over full frame. It is ruggedly built and weather resistant.

Continuous lock ups

By Larry
Rated 1 out of 5
Date: 2022-04-13

Within the first 20 photos my camera locked up during use, not responding to any button presses and unable to be turned off unless the battery was removed. I thought maybe it was a fluke so I brushed it off. Well now it occurs every time I use this new body, I have under 200 shots and it locks up every 20-30 shots requiring battery removal... I'm using supported memory cards of both model types and tried multiple cards. I've tried multiple lenses, multiple batteries, and with and without a battery grip and the issues persist. Sometimes I get an ERR message and sometimes not, looks like I got a $1,600 paperweight and will have to continue using my old d7200 for DX and d750 for FX.....

Sqare Trade Protection Plan (STPP) for D500: Square Trade technicians are not trained by Nikon. How do they know how to fix problems with this complex, brand new camera? What are the minimum specifications for the card(s) (both SD and XQD) in order for the camera to support 10 fps for 200 images?
Asked by: Mike
Thank you for the rapid responses … However, these two replies are somewhat contradictory. I do not currently own a D500 but I'm seriously considering acquiring one. (Hence I do not have the manual to peruse!) Both answers seem to make sense, but I do not see how both can be correct simultaneously. As I will probably purchase a D500 (waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday to see if I can get a better deal!) I'm trying to figure out what card(s) to buy with it and how to configure the camera to use them to best advantage. I LIKE the ability to use an SD card as a backup, but "Anonymous" indicates this will impair my ability to take 10 fps for 200 images. The answers are not likely to dissuade me from buying the D500, but is will likely influence my options on card selections and in-camera setup. Thanks

You can find the lens sold separately on the B&H site and find all the specs plus reviews there . I've been quite happy with mine (also bought as part of the D500 kit) and, to me at least, it seems to be quite a cut above the typical "kit lens."
