question

Which lens is better sigma 2.8 50mm macro or this canon one?
Asked by: Anonymous
The canon 50mm is not 1:1 like the Sigma lens. It is 1:2 so it does not have as much magnification.

question

I read this lens has a Floating Optical System. Is this the same as the IS, if not what is the difference. I am having problems keeping the camera steady due to a shoulder injury and other than using a tripod, with out IS or flash I have problems. Thank you or your time and information!
Asked by: Anonymous
The floating optical system is an optical element that moves separately from the rest of the focusing lens group. This does not help stabilize the lens which is what the IS would help you with. For a Canon Macro lens with stabilization please click the following link: http://bhpho.to/1gDAZ7U.

question

I photograph 2-D art (oil paintings) and just purchased the Canon 5D Mark III, but need assistance in choosing a lens. After a great deal of research, many art photographers recommend using a Macro lens. My goal is to achieve crisp images throughout the entire frame, low chromatic aberration and low distortion. Would the EF 50mm f/2.5 compact macro lens deliver on these expectations, or should I consider the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Canon 50mm f2.5 would be an excellent for reproducing artwork. It's a very sharp lens with very little distortion at all. I think it would be the right choice for photographing 2D paintings.

question

I already have the 50mm 1.8 and use it all the time but I'm needing a little extra for details. Thinking this lens with the macro would be good since its just a hobby and I'll sell my other 50mm any thoughts?
Asked by: Anonymous
That is one way to go, or you could keep your 50mm f1.8 lens and use it as a normal lens, and the opt for what are called extension tubes which essentially will turn the lens into a macro lens. Extension tube have no optics, but they work by increasing the distance of the lens to the sensor, which decreases your minimum focus distance and increases the magnification (just like a macro lens would). Kenko brand makes a set of 3 tubes which can be mixed and matched to find the best option for your shot. This set up would be less expensive and more versatile than going with the Canon 50mm f2.5 macro. See the link below for details on the extension tube set:http://bhpho.to/9lC7iV
