Hawke Sport Optics 35201 overview

  • 1Description

Built to be highly portable and powerful, Hawke Sports Optics' green 15x50 Nature-Trek Monocular features phase-corrected BAK4 roof prisms and anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics to produce bright and clear high-contrast images with true color rendition. Coupled with the optical features is a large 50mm diameter objective, which gives the binocular exceptional low-light performance versus smaller-objective optics. The combination of optics, objectives, and high magnification make the Nature-Trek ideally suited for most outdoor activities from hunting, to birding, to sporting events.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that make the binocular durable and comfortable to use. Its durability starts with a lightweight, and impact and corrosion-resistant polycarbonate chassis that is protected by green rubberized armor. The armoring is textured to give it a non-slip grip in cold and wet conditions. The optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be water and fogproof - especially in extreme weather conditions. A diopter adjustment on the eyepiece allows the monocular to be customized to most people's needs, and twist-up eyecups means it can be comfortably used with or without eyewear. The Nature-Trek weighs in at 14.6 oz with a length of just 6.4 inches, making this powerful optic exceedingly portable. For steady viewing it comes with a simple tabletop tripod, or it can be mounted on most photo or video tripods using the 1/4"-20 socket.

    Hawke Sport Optics 35201 reviews

    15x50 Nature-Trek Monocular (Green) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from top notch I have been into optics most of my long life. Monoculars (and pocket loupes) are my favorites for simplicity of use and lightweight ease of carry. You can't use what you didn't bring with you because it was too heavy and clunky. This Hawke model may be a tough choice. First the pros. Optics are top notch. This is the absolute best monocular at a reasonable price I have ever had, and I've had many and looked thru most everything available on the market including some of the very high priced ones. I did initially hesitate to buy this model due to the size. I realized the 50mm lens kinda defeats the ease of portability reason for buying a monocular. But I also know the light gathering advantages of a 50mm objective lens, so was tempted, and bought it from another site I was looking at for a slightly lower price. After using it, I was not disappointed, in fact, was very surprised at how nice this unit is. Very high quality throughout. Hawke is not a common name in optics, but I later found they are very well regarded in the rifle scope world. I wanted a monocular that would be great in the day, and fairly good for night sky viewing. I do not expect anything handheld to rival a proper telescope. I also know a small monocular will never be any good gathering the light needed for satisfactory night sky views. To do that requires bigger light gathering optics, which adds weight and defeats the ease of carry purpose of having a monocular. An impossible set of contradictory specs for any designer to meet. Still, the 15x50 piqued my interest, as it just might stretch to satisfy both my day and night viewing specs. Yes, it would be bigger than I wanted, but something has to give to meet both day and night specs. After having used this unit for over a year, I would have to buy another if anything ever happened to this one. Clear and sharp across nearly the entire field of view. My personal night sky test of clearly seeing the moons of Jupiter was easily passed by this Hawke. It has been a pleasure to view the night sky with this monocular. My favorite for night sky are the Vixen 10x50 binoculars, but these are not pocket sized. Neither is the Hawke, unless you have a bit bigger pocket. Still, I would not hesitate to recommend this Hawke 15x50 to a good friend, as long as they understood it's not a tiny pocket monocular. There are 2 cons, but these are minor. First, the previously mentioned weight and size issues are unavoidable. You'd have to change the laws of physics to lighten the weight and reduce the size and still get the same performance. I'm just reinforcing that a potential purchaser should be aware it's bigger and heavier than most monoculars. The second issue, which Hawke CAN do something about, is to add a loop or eyelet to attach a lanyard. The current design only has a 1/4-20 threaded hole for a tripod is so one can use it as a small spotting scope, a class it is more in than a monocular, though it bridges both worlds. I made a neck strap using a ring terminal for wiring ends which I flattened down onto a length of nylon cord, then attached to the tripod hole with a short 1/4-20 bolt. Not pretty, but it worked, and lets me carry it around my neck and quickly bring to my eye. If Hawke were to add an eyelet for a lanyard, this unit would be much easier to carry, and would fall more into the monocular category. I often wondered why someone would take the time to write a long review for no pay. Well, I am finally doing it myself with this review. I'm doing it for the benefit of anyone with specs similar to mine and hesitating on buying this. If you want a superior monocular for daytime viewing, and want it to be satisfactory for night sky viewing as well, you will enjoy this model by Hawke. I hope this review is helpful to souls like myself that want both. Just realize the size and weight issues. I personally think the trade-off is well worth it for this excellent monocular.
