Glyph Technologies SRF12000 overview

  • 1Description

Designed with the ability to edit and playback multiple HD video streams, the StudioRAID4 12TB 4-Bay RAID Array (4 x 3TB) from Glyph Technologies is a production-grade external RAID array that is hardware controlled and connects to your Windows or Mac system using its one USB 3.0 port, two FireWire 800 ports, or one eSATA port at speeds up to 280 MB/s. The StudioRAID4 is equipped with four 3.5" drive bays and a total capacity of 12TB, which is configured with 4 x 3TB 7200 rpm hard drives.

To help facilitate its functionality within a production environment, the StudioRAID4 comes pre-configured as a RAID 0, which helps enhance performance by spreading data across all four drives. It is also compatible with RAID 1, 3, 5, and 10, each of which offers speed, redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require RAID support, there is also the option for JBOD. This RAID array is powered by a 100-240V auto-switching power supply that runs at 50/60 Hz, is cooled with an intelligent quiet fan, uses disk health monitoring, and is constructed from an all-metal enclosure. While the StudioRAID4 comes pre-formatted for HFS+ for Mac, it may also be used with Windows after a simple reformat. Included is a USB 3.0 cable, a FireWire 800 cable, and a power cable. This RAID array is protected by hardware, data recovery, and advance replacement warranties.

    Glyph Technologies SRF12000 reviews

    StudioRAID4 12TB 4-Bay RAID Array (4 x 3TB | USB 3.0, FireWire 800, eSATA) is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid storage solution Using as RAID 10, therefore have 6TB storage available. Set-up was smooth as could be using the instruction card from Glyph to reset the RAID to my specification. The unit has an eSATA connection to a Mac Pro running OS X 10.11.4. So far, over 1TB of photo files have been placed with nary a hiccup. Only one minor surprise: my Mac sees the unit as a SCSI device although this hasn't caused any difficulties. this is my second device from Glyph - the first, a four-bay 4TB drive operated 7X24 for over five years. One of the four 1TB drives failed but was replaced without any loss of data, overall an impressive track record.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I Really Wanted This to Work I needed something with speed and a large amount of storage space with which to edit my movies. I was really hoping the Glyph StudioRaid 4 would do the job sadly, it just couldn't handle it. To begin with, the fan is extraordinarily loud. Loud does not work in a studio environment. However, it wasn't a normal loud, not just a constant fan humming along. No, it sounded like it was constantly revving up then down, up then down, up, down, etc. It continuously did that non stop. That's not the worst of it. After the second time the Glyph just unexpectedly unmounted itself from my desktop, I stopped using it. Two times this thing just decided it didn't want to be connected anymore, so I had to transfer my movie project to a small external HD just so I could work in peace. I don't understand why the drive behaves this way. The Glyph was sitting on an open desk, so there's no way it was overheating. Plenty of airflow, plenty of space. It upsets me immensely as it's a really great looking drive, it feels substantial, and appears to have great build quality. It's just a terrible drive to have in a studio or, anywhere.
