Sekonic L-478DR-PX overview

  • 1Description

Equipped with a large and intuitive 2.7" color touchscreen LCD and now featuring built-in radio triggering for the 2.4 GHz Phottix Strato II wireless system, the LiteMaster Pro L-478DR-U-PX Series Light Meter from Sekonic will make incident metering for ambient and flash light super simple. The 4-channel system also has separate selection between 4 groups with measured values maintained for ratio determination.

Notable for the L-478 light meter series is the large color touchscreen, which allows for fast control over settings for both ambient and flash metering. The meter is quite capable as well, able to function within a range of -2 to 22.9 EV at ISO 100. And, for the current crop of hybrid shooters this model expands on its standard stills functions with two distinct video modes: Cine and HD Cine. These settings give access to frame rate selection from 1-1,000 fps as well as shutter angle settings from 1-358° as well as ISO 850 for Canon cinema cameras.

Guaranteeing the best possible performance is a suite of functions and features that will ensure users have the best tools available to them. Among these is a flash analyzing function that uses ambient and flash simultaneously to allow for shooters to dial in their preferred mix. Also, using the included Data Transfer Software users will be able to do Exposure Profiling for their camera by using the optional 5° viewfinder, showing dynamic range limits and knowing that you will have an accurate exposure. Alongside this is a Filtration Compensation Mode that allows for the meter to account for filter factor, which can now be done at up to 12 EV for landscape shooters using high-density ND filters. Other features include a contrast function for comparing brightness, a memory mode for 9 readings, and illuminance or luminance measurement.

Lumisphere receptor head rotates 90° right and 180° left and retracts for conversion to a flat diffuser
Optional 5° viewfinder for spot metering
Ambient light measuring modes include aperture priority, shutter speed priority, TF priority, CINE, HD Cine, illuminance, and luminance
Flash can be measured with PC sync terminal connection, cordless, or radio triggering
Measuring range at ISO 100 of -2 to 22.9 EV with incident light or 3 to 22.9 EV with reflected light
ISO range of 3 to 409,600 in 1/3 steps, including 850 for Canon cinema cameras
Other functions: exposure profile, mid tone function, exposure compensation, filter compensation, multiple cumulative function, memory/clear/recall function, average function, contrast function, auto power off, touch panel lock
Runs on 2 AAA batteries
Firmware upgradeable via mini-USB port

    Sekonic L-478DR-PX reviews

LiteMaster Pro L-478DR-U-PX Series Light Meter for Phottix Strato II System is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from For Strato II and Below Phottix Strato II Multi Will trigger Phottix Strato II Multi and Phottix Strato Receivers, and Phottix Atlas II triggers in receiver mode Phottix Strato II Multi transmitters will not trigger Phottix Odin receivers

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Strato II isn't its name... ... it's the phottix system it works with. Does NOT work with the Odin system?!?!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Misleading Adverstisement Here are the takeaways: It works with the Indra 500s, but you lose the ability to dial in your lights, you are all manual. It DOES NOT work with the Odin IIs at all. I bought this because I saw a video by Sekonic. It looked awesome, it worked with everything I have, my Odin IIs and my Indra 500s. Well . . it does not, at least not the way the video shows. It can work with the Indra 500's if you set them to Strato II mode. But, you loose all ability to mange them remotely. At that point, the Sekonic triggers the lights, but you have to adjustment manually. It does not work AT ALL with the Oddin II system. What a waste of time! This is going back and I am getting just a regular light meter. The manual is also very incomplete and hard to follow. Very disappointed with this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It DOES NOT WORK with Phottix Strato II TTL remotes B&H has been fantastic as usual but we are extremely unhappy with this Sekonics product. Despite what it seems to say in the product literature, it does not have ability to trigger our Phottix Strato II TTL remotes flash triggers. I have seen other people on web say they have same issue. This is why we purchased the item - to meter those Speedlights with Statto II TTL receivers. Unfortunately, we dont have all the packing so cant return the meter. We are using it as a paperweight and as an inside joke Yeh.. Remember when we bought that piece of junk from Sekonics that says it works with our flash trigger/receivers? LOL - we threw that money out the window.. It could well be it does work with our trigger receivers but no way to know as we cant get anyone to talk to us about it. This is not B&H's problem it is Sekonics. I have tried calling Sekonix US distributor to try to get to the bottom of this but only get voice mail that doesnt respond. I buy tens of thousands of dollars of video and photo gear per year for my firm from a wide range of suppliers but will never buy another Sekonics product after this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Capable Light Meter This version of the L-478 is for Phottix owners using Strato II remotes. All control of remote light settings aremanual. If you prefer and enjoy full manual control, this setup is for you. I use both Odin II and Strato II remotes and they are completely different animals. Odin supportsTTL and wireless adjustment of remote flash controls, Strato II does not. That said, when using Strato II remotes the Phottix version of this meter will remotely trigger and measure, using a single screen, theoutput ofall of your remote flashes. It works very well. Additionally, Sekonic allows you to create a number of camera-specific profiles using a calibration card and the supplied DTS software. Create/load the profiles and then selectthe one on the light meter according to the specificcamera you are using. Measuring reflected light requires addition of the 5deg Viewfinder.Swapping between the twois easy; however, having to do so makes the L-758/858 look more attractive. I like too, that these meters support light reading for video. Super helpful to have that when usingvideo capture viaDSLR.
