FiiO K5 overview

  • 1Description

The K5 from Fiio is a high quality headphone amplifier and DAC with an integrated dock for Fiio audio players, such as the X1, X3II, X5II, X7, and E17K. The headphone amplifier utilizes a Texas Instruments TPA6120A2 chipset, which provides an extra current amplification stage resulting in high current output suitable for highly dynamic program material. The headphone output offers three gain settings which accommodates for a variety of headphone sensitivities.

For connections, the K5 offers stereo RCA inputs and outputs, as well as a balanced output via two TRS 1/8" / 3.5 mm. The rear dock port is a secondary input for docking Fiio players, should you wish to bypass the top loaded dock. A USB port is offered as a pass through for USB functions such as USB storage read/write and USB DAC functions. The K5 ships with a power supply.

Docking Solutions
  • Fiio X series music players X1, X3II, X5II, X7, and the DAC/Amp E17K utilize a 11-pin micro SUB port and may realize exclusion docking expansion functions such as amplification and charging
High Output Headphone Amplifier
  • Utilizing TI's TPA6120A2 current feedback headphone driver, the K5 utilizes exclusive technology to lower its output impedance to a transparent <1 ohm and increase its maximum output power to up to 1.5W@ 32 ohms. Utilizing an extra current amplification stage and comprising an internal high efficiency, low noise power supply, the K5 has high current output, satisfying highly dynamic program material, and has three gain settings suitable for headphones of different sensitivities
Finely Crafted Design
  • Compared to the last-generation E-series products, the K5 has made a breakthrough strides in exterior designs and craft, with lower tolerances for all joints and seams, more high-quality sanded surface finish and an indented front bezel assembly for a further upgrade in appearance
Synchronized Power On/Off
  • When the K5 powers on/off, the docked X1, X3II, X5II, X7, or E17K will power on/off in sync, a great convenience for users and a sign of complete integration of the docked devices
Expanded USB DAC Functions
  • The K5 realizes further amplification of X3II, X5II, X7, E17K's DAC signal by directly connecting them to USB source through USB In port and receiving the decoded line signal through the dock for amplification. (USB DAC driver installations for X3II, X5II, X7, and E17K required where applicable)

    FiiO K5 reviews

K5 Docking Headphone Amplifier / DAC is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from nice Works well.Quality great.Expected more weight in keeping with size but fine. Please don't add weight for it's on sake Fiio.Another rca pre-out would have been preferred over the balanced outputs.Sound:It makes it louder and better. An amp is worth it.Wall wart functions fine, but I have myriad options to supply 15v..This was one reason I went with K5 over the Magni .Another was cool docking capability.I use with a modded Phillips shp9500it needs it.Also Sennheiser hd580needs it and uses ALL of it.More that don't require it but it doesn't hurt.ATH ad900xANYthing powers this,Grado 225,misc portables and iems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Add convienience to Audiophile music enjoyment I dock my FiiO x3 gen2 audio player into the X5 and it adds a hole new level of convenience to my entire music listening experience. I hook my audio output of my computer to the line in so I still have audio if the player is out. I use the dac input for sound when the player is in. I use Sennheiser HD 650 with the Amp and get awesome sound , the front volume control again adding to the convenience of operation. I have my pioneer sx 750 hooked to to my line out when you just need to have speakers. Its great have all this capability available in a great looking package and my X3 is being charged. If you have compatible FiiO players this is a great way go. I just wish the volume control controlled the line out level instead of just to the headphone jack

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Addition for Fiio's X1 Completely satisfied with the amplifier. Paired it with Fiio X1 and use this combination with Sennheiser 598SE. Bass improved, soundstage in these cans was wide and became even wider. Lots of details. Perfect match as a dock station for the Fiio Xs as well. I really love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Amp BUT......... It will not work with the new X7 MarkII. The X7 case is too wide for the bay and it won't allow it to sit down on the USB connector. Its a nice amp and I am keeping it for my X5. It is not a DAC. You have to use the internal DAC in the FIIO.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent with Fiio X5ii I discovered a while ago that my X5ii needed more power to drive my headphones. The additional amplification provides more dynamic range. i have been using the FiiO E12 amp for some time, but I wanted an AC powered unit that would also charge the X5ii. The output of the K5 is about twice that of the E12 and my listening tests with hi-res flac files confirm that the sound is uncolored, but with greater dynamic range. I use 80 ohm Beyerdynamic DT1350 phones and also the Shure SRH1840. Both require some external amplification. Dynamic range should not be confused with loudness. Dynamic range is the ability to reproduce peak levels with low distortion. This is particularly true with bass response because more power is needed to reproduce low frequencies due to the greater excursion needed by headphone and speaker drivers. This is why external amplifiers are so valuable with portable music players. This device is described as a headphone amplifier/DAC. This is not correct - it is not a DAC. It is an amplifier only, with the DAC provided by a compatible FiiO device. Thus, by putting the FiiO device in the DAC mode it can function as an external DAC with a computer. A USB cable is provided. Mac's don't require a driver, PC's do. Drivers are available from FiiO. When docked with the K5 the X5ii is relatively secure and all of the buttons and the display are easily accessible. The K5 is heavy enough and has non-skid feet to keep it in place. The large volume control is easy to operate. The taper of the control is gentle making increases or decreases smooth. I'm using gain switch in the mid position. The knob is at eleven o'clock for a comfortable level. I have not used the line in or out jacks yet. I do not think I will use the balanced outputs, but it's nice to have them. For some reason FiiO chose to use a 1/4 inch headphone jack on the front panel. They do include an adapter with the K5. They also include spacers for their smaller DAC's. Not needed with the X5ii. In summary, this is a reasonable priced device that will enhance your listening experience with FiiO DAP's. Highly recommended.
