Leica Summicron-M overview

  • 1Description

A bright wide-angle prime with consistent performance throughout the aperture range, the Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH. Lens is well-suited to reportage and environmental photography in a variety of working conditions. Aside from the wide perspective, this 28mm f/2 is also characterized by a sophisticated nine elements in six groups design, which incorporates a single aspherical element to control distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the focusing and aperture ranges. The optical design further contributes to refined handling of lens flare and ghosting, and maintains a high degree of sharpness even when working at f/2. An indispensable prime for highlighting your environment, the compact stature, smooth manual focus control, and bright maximum aperture make this a truly versatile option for M shooters.

One aspherical element is featured in the optical design to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and clarity. This design also contributes to a marked reduction of astigmatism and promotes edge-to-edge sharpness throughout the aperture range.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
Manual focus design provides a minimum focusing distance of 2.3' with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:21.9.
The front of the lens has 46mm-diameter threads to accept optional filters, and the lens is male threaded to accept the included lens hood.

    Leica Summicron-M reviews

    Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH. Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp with good DOF I am pretty new to Leica and the M system. This was the second lens I purchased after the 50 Summilux. This is a very sharp lens with extremely minimal distortion. Color is accurate. I find this to be perfect for street photography and tight spaces. Out of focus is smooth wide open. Stopping down to 5.6 and above will provide wide depth of focus. allowing for quick photography using the lens scale only. This makes it easy to get out among people and shoot away. The lens is very compact, and the screw in metal hood is very nice. This focal length is about as wide as you get go while getting good framing with the M type 262 rangefinder. Anything wider will require an accessory finder or a camera with live view.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Upgrade Than I Anticipated I had the prior version of this lens. I sold the lens when this newer model was announced. I did this with a leap of faith that this newer model would be better (and worth the substantial upgrade cost). I have not been disappointed. I just came back from two days at the Grand Canyon, shooting with this new lens on my M Monochrom. I can tell the difference. The images, particularly when stopped down, are a bit more crisp in the corners and on the edges. Also, while wide angle distortion is evident, it seemed a bit more easy to adjust the distortion when processing the images. Overall, I would say that I am very satisfied with this upgraded 28mm Summicron Lens. If you are a serious Leica M shooter, then I highly recommend this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best 28mm I have ever used Originally wanted the 28mm Elmarit, but My Leica dealer didn't have it, but did have the Summicron. Bought it 10yrs ago for around $3000. At the time it was the fastest 28mm Leica made. That was very important to me because at the time I loved shooting wide. This lens is very sharp. Due to it being a 28mm wide, I can easily hold this lens steady under 1/30 shutter speed with excellent results. Of course this is really an advantage of all wide angle focal lengths. I really love this lens and how sharp it is, and it very much has that Leica look. Do note that this lens with the hood blocks the corner of the viewfinder. This does not bother me, but I typically shot this lens without the hood. I have the older version with the plastic hood. In some ways I prefer Leica plastic hoods over the new metal one. But the new ones are much nicer to look at and feel much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Lens Very light. Extremely high quality. The perfect wide angle lens for any camera. I use it on M3 and M240 and get great results. It is expensive for a Summicron, but it is extremely sharp . High quality and light weight make it a good choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding I used to own the previous version and now own the revised version 2. Optically this is the best wide-angle lens I've ever used. Sharp from corner to corner, outstanding color rendition and beautiful bokeh when focused on nearby objects at wide apertures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You will love this lens Superb optics. My only complaint, which I have for all my metal hood Leica glass, is filter mounting and use. Manipulation of filters is harder with metal hood. I've learned to live with it. Just a pet peeve. This is the widest lens using the rangefinder's view lines. Wider requires using live view or an optional viewfinder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I have an order for a Leica M10 and got the Summicron 28mm f/2 to use with my Sony a6300 with the Novaflex adapter (also from B & H). The photo are extremely sharp and has the pop you see with Leica lenses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple things matter Optically the lens is superb and exceeds the previous version, which I also own. Little things matter to me so I will run them down. + Lens cap covers the lens shade cut out + Lens cap is flexible rubber that is molded and does a great job + Lens shade is metal - Lens shade interferes with polarizing filters
