Leica Elmarit-M Overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its sleek, unobtrusive profile, the Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH. Lens is a compact optic that is particularly well-suited for street photography applications. Beyond its svelte stature, this wide-angle prime also features an eight-element, six-group optical design that contains one aspherical element to minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for clean, sharp image quality throughout the aperture and focusing ranges. Additionally, for intuitive handling and use, the manual focus design lends precise control while shooting, and its short, just over 1" in length, profile barely protrudes into the viewfinder field of M cameras for a clearer, uncluttered perspective while composing images.

One aspherical element is featured in the optical design to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and clarity. This aspherical element also contributes to a compact design that extends just slightly into the viewfinder of M cameras.
Manual focus design provides a minimum focusing distance of 2.3' with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:22.
The front of the lens has 39mm-diameter threads to accept optional filters and the lens is male threaded to accept the included lens hood.

    Leica Elmarit-M Reviews

    Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH. Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite Leica-M wide angle This lens's superb optical performance and build quality are well-documented. I additionally love it for its compact size: It's the smallest Leica-M lens, practically a pancake, which makes it perfect for travel. It also blocks far less of the viewfinder than the faster 28s. Note that this lens has a focusing tab, and no knurled focusing ring. I prefer the tab for fast handheld work (which is the Leica M's forte), but if you don't like tabs, you should check out other offerings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and Compact I love the small size and superb sharpness of this lens. I usually carry it with the lens hood removed, with just a filter and the metal lens cap that comes with it. Great for street shooting, it is very discreet and the depth of field makes it easy to get accurate focus. With the excellent noise suppression in the M240, M246 and M10, you don't miss the smaller f2.8 f stop compared to the much more expensive Summicron or Summilux.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and Small This lens is very sharp and it is small. I tend to leave it on the camera because even if I need a longer lens, I can simply crop to get it if I am making medium sized prints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clear and nuanced I am using this lens with film--I cant comment on how it goes with digital cameras. Very sharp, consistent lens at all apertures and across the field of view. Quite smooth continuum between in-focus and OOF areas--if youre obsessed with bokeh this might not be the lens you want, though its there on a relatively subtle level. I dont generally splurge on Leica lenses but I do think this one is significantly better than any cheaper options at this focal length. The attached was taken on TMax 100 on a gloomy day with the aperture wide open.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New lens The lens itself is very nice and appears to work well. I am having some photos taken with it developed tomorrow. One complaint: the zipper on the case is defective; it does not zip completely.
