Roland FP-30 overview

  • 1Description

The white FP-30 from Roland provides the opportunity for the budget- and space-constrained student/performer to have access to the sound of a real piano in a light and portable form factor. The 88-key instrument delivers an authentic piano experience, both from the SuperNATURAL Piano engine and the weighted keyboard that inherits the touch, escapement, and Ivory Feel keys found in the company's high-end home pianos.

Aside from the piano sounds, built-in practice and recording functions, and Bluetooth wireless support for working with popular music apps, the keyboard provides non-piano sounds like organs, strings, and voices. A variety of onboard drum patterns allow for enjoying all types of music styles, and USB support enables the performer to play along with favorite tunes and save SMF songs captured with the built-in recorder.

Twin Piano mode is perfect for private lessons, allowing student and teacher to play side by side in the same octave ranges. Dual amplifiers and speakers deliver an authentic tone, while plugging in headphones allows for embarking on musical journeys day or night without disturbing housemates or neighbors.

For a more traditional setup, the optional KSC-70 stand and KPD-70 three-pedal unit provide an integrated look and classic pedal configuration while maintaining a much smaller footprint than a typical upright piano. Another benefit of the KPD-70's foot pedals is the ability to use hands-free turning of onscreen music pages when using mobile apps such as piaScore and Sheet Music Direct.

    Roland FP-30 reviews

FP-30 Digital Piano (White) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a great instument, especially for the price. I really like it. Most important to me was touch sensitivity and it has that. Plus there are a lot of interesting sounds built into it, besides a traditional piano sound. I feels like I am playing an old fashioned acoustic piano. Also, nice simple design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best digital piano in this price range Roland has been 100% invested in digital technology since 1972 when Yahama and Kawai were only stretching piano wire . And it shows. I was all set to get the much hyped [rhymes with Hawaii] ES 110 based on reviews alone. Then I actually tried one at a store. The key action was an immediate turn off - not only were the keys light (designed for weak fingers), the rebound noise was just *awful*. Every key release resulted in a very audible 'thud', and on top bounced a couple of times too ! There is a YouTube video on this. Look it up. The sound was ok but with the smaller speakers and weaker amplifier than the Roland it was difficult to tell. The first thing about the FP 30 that strikes you is the heft and quality feel to the keys. Key action is very pleasing - they have just the right amount of resistance. Not overly heavy, nor too light. Sound quality is second to none in this price range as Roland has invested heavily in DSP technology. The modeling of the dynamics of piano sound is also very realistic. Roland says they generate tones on the fly based on a baseline sample (recorded from a Steinway grand) and applying proprietary digital filters depending on finger action, while others like the Yamaha (in this price range at least) simply play one of various recorded samples. Regardless, the sound is very very authentic. A common misconception about the FP-30 is that it's too "bright" and not suited for Classical pieces. The first part is half true and the second part is completely false. It is true that the default piano tone upon power-on is Grand Piano 1 which is ever so slightly on the bright side. But there are three piano tones available. The second, Grand Piano 2 is a little mellower, but not only that, there is a parameter called 'brilliance' (brightness) which can be adjusted. The reviewers who claim the Roland is "too bright" don't tell you this. When I am playing Classical (Debussy, Chopin, Beethoven..) I select GP 2 and set Brilliance to -2 (minus 2 ) and the sweet richness of a concert Steinway Grand fills my ears. All in all it's a lovely digital piano and has grown on my in the three months I have had it. If I had to nitpick I would say Roland should have added an AUX out (line out) to the unit but the once or twice I played through an external amp, the headphone out seemed to work just fine. Otherwise a fantastic piano. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.
