Zacuto Z-FIND-FS5 Reviews

Essential Accessory for Sony FS5

This Zacuto Z-Finder attached to the LCD screen of a Sony FS5, converting it to a magnified viewfinder like those found on ENG cameras. The magnification is 2.5x, and the eyepiece focuses to accommodate your vision, with or without glasses, over a wide range. The resolution is higher than the EVF, and can be used with the camera on your shoulder or on a tripod. It makes manual focusing easy and accurate, as well as the status information and menus. The finder slips into a bracket, which is snapped securely closed. The body is plastic, but the brackets and hard points are machined aluminum. The original camera to finder mount is plastic, and relatively weak. B&H sells Smallrig replacements, which are machined from aluminum. The FS5 handle has 3 hard points for this mount, or you can use an articulated arm attached to a 15mm rod.

I love it

It makes the bracket fragile.

I purchased this Zacuto viewfinder couple months ago, and the first shoot I had with it, I was pretty amazed by the quality of the material and also how great it was to have a good magnifier for that small LCD screen. It reminds me of the cool FS7's viewfinder, which I personally thought was a lack on the FS5 model. Although the quality of that piece of equipment, the FS5 cheap plastic arm bracket that connects the screen to the camera seems to be too fragile for that heavy bulky viewfinder. It happened twice that the bracket colapse with such a tiny impact and I had to ship it back to Sony to get a replacement one. I wish either the Zacuto viewfinder could be lighter or the FS5 bracket stronger. Plus, it feels like the incredible versatility allowing, in no time, to place your FS5 lcd monitor in different ways or flip it is now obstruct by the viewfinder. In conclusion, I would say: Cool piece of equipment with some nice features, but not properly think for this camera model yet.

Good but heavy

This is my first Zacuto product and I am happy with the build quality except for the snapping in of the z-finder to the LCD clasp. To take it off feels like you have to force it and things tend to snap when you have to force it (you won't have to take it off unless you need to put the extenders or the fog lenses in). The other I found a down side is it takes a few seconds to turn the knob to loosen the screen to tilt it and then another few seconds to tighten it. Not a big deal but the weight of the z-finder makes it to where you have to tighten it into place where ever you tilt it. All that said, it is an important addition because the camera doesn't come with a sunshade or loupe on the LCD. The magnification also helps a lot. I would highly suggest getting the support plate because the camera's rod is plastic and will not last long with the z-finder. But the weight does un-balance the camera and with it on, it is left side heavy. A mic would counter this a little. All in all, its great with a few downs but I would recommend it.

Sharp at last!

With ageing eyes unless ones very strong spectacles (+3.0 dioptre) at a close distance the Sony PXW-FS5 LCD viewfinder a lack of perfect focus might be missed. I'm a very happy purchaser of this excellently-built Z-finder

Does the rubber eye cup prevent seeing the LCD ...

Does the rubber eye cup prevent seeing the LCD well while wearing glasses? Round eyepieces work fine for me; the curved type can be a problem.
Asked by: Mitch
Yes it does. However you can use the diopter to adjust if you take your glasses off.

question

Will this FS5 Z finder also fit on my FS7?
Asked by: Wolf
The FS5 Z finder is a hinged loupe which fits the monitor of the Sony FS5 exclusively I've read on the Zacuto site so the answer is no. What is wrong with your FS7's monitor arrangement?
