Leica X-U (Typ 113) Overview

Pairing a robust physical design with refined image quality, the X-U (Typ 113) Digital Camera is Leica's entrance into the world of tough, durable camera designs. Still adhering to Leica's preference for classic and intuitive operation, this camera features a prime Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens that offers an equivalent focal length of 35mm, along with a bright f/1.7 maximum aperture for working in difficult lighting conditions. This sophisticated lens pairs with a large 16.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, which affords a broad sensitivity range to ISO 12500, along with up to 5 fps continuous shooting and Full HD 1080p video recording. Enabling use of these imaging components in less than ideal conditions, the X-U (Typ 113) distinguishes itself from other Leica compatriots by its anti-slip rubber exterior and waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof design for working in harsh and underwater environments.

Rugged Design
The X-U (Typ 113) features a tough, rugged construction that is designed to withstand harsh climates and underwater shooting:
  • Waterproof to depths of 49' / 15m for up to 60 minutes of shooting (IP68-compliant)
  • Shockproof to falls from 4' / 1.2m high (MIL-STD 810G, method 516.52-compliant)
  • Dustproof to protect the internal components of the camera
  • Anti-slip rubber exterior for improved grip in wet conditions
  • Integrated UW protective glass filter guards the front element.
16.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
While robust in its physical design, the X-U is equally apt with its imaging capabilities due to the inclusion of a large 16.2MP APS-C CMOS image sensor. This sensor avails a sensitivity range from ISO 100-12500 to suit working in a wide array of lighting conditions, and also supports up to 5 fps continuous shooting for up to 7 frames in DNG + JPEG mode and Full HD 1080p video recording at 30 fps. Additionally, a dedicated Underwater shooting mode can be used to compensate for unwanted color shifts when photographing in water.
Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens
Offering a 35mm equivalent focal length, the built-in Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens features a sophisticated optical design comprised of 10 elements in eight groups, including two aspherical elements. This design strives to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions for greater sharpness and clarity, and also reduces the overall size and weight of the lens. The bright f/1.7 maximum aperture also contributes to enhanced performance in low-light conditions and, when combined with a dedicated manual focus ring, allows for greater control over depth of field when using selective focus techniques.
Other Camera Features
  • The durable body design incorporates a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD screen for live view shooting and bright image playback.
  • Manual shutter speed and aperture control dials are accessible on the top plate of the camera for intuitive exposure adjustment.
  • A built-in flash is placed above the lens on the front of the camera body to provide additional illumination when working in difficult lighting conditions.
  • An 11-point autofocus system can make use of spot and face detection focusing modes for precision when photographing moving subjects.
  • In-camera film modes simulate a traditional filmic aesthetic, and include Standard, Dynamic, Natural, B&W Natural, and B&W High Contrast settings.

How does this camera sensor do in low light? I have a Leica digital that is terrible quality in low light.
Asked by: Barbara
Unfortunately this camera does not perform very well at higher iso's. Above 3200, it's pretty noisy. The lower iso images are excellent.

question

I was wondering about the style of photography that you can take with the Leica X-U camera as compared to the Leica Q camera as far as taking photos of street photography or landscapes or micro photography. I kinda like the Leica X-U camera for its design and it's ruggedness and being able to use it in any kind of weather. What I'm asking is will I for the most part be able to take similar photos with the Leica X-U camera as compared to the Leica Q camera. I know that the Leica Q camera is $1,000 more than the Leica X-U camera and I'm trying to make up my mind on which camera to buy. I hope that somebody's got answer for me. Thank You!
Asked by: peter cologgi
The decision comes down to selecting the best camera for the job. What is the job then? Are you wanting a superb, stripped down camera for everyday candid, landscape or macro photography? Then the Q would be a very good choice. Or will you be doing all the above but will be in more physical environments such as hiking, camping, kayaking, sail boating, swimming, snorkeling, or being out with children? Then the X-U will give you great images yet will survive knocks, drops, and the water.

question

I was wondering and this may seem like a crazy question but I wanted to know if the Leica Q camera in Snow (white) is that model camera designed for women. the reason that I asked is because in the pictures for that Leica Q camera there's a picture of a woman and I was just wondering about if that camera is for women or not. I kinda like that camera and I just had to ask about it. I hope that somebody's got answer for me. Thank You!

The Leica Q (Typ 116) Digital Camera (Snow) was created in a limited edition of 300 units to commemorates the 2018 international winter sporting events. It was designed by the 2014 male snowboarding gold medalist, Iouri Podladtchikov. So if anyone can find this camera, they will enjoy this special souvenir.

question

Where is it manufactured?
Asked by: edward w.
Possibly where panasonic electrical goods and cameras are made I,don't think they are all put together in Germany .the saddest thing about new leicas is you can't get a certain answer if the camera is made in Germany and if it's actually a Leica and not a panasonic ,research the camera before buying it because Fujifilm has a much better option.just friendly advice ,I love Leica but not when it's a red sticker that's only Leica .film leicas are the only certain leicas and Leica lenses ,I'm not to sure about plastic leicas that aren't really leicas.sad but true.

The lens on the Leica X-U does not have filter threads. Unfortunately, at this time there is no ETA as this is still a pre-order item, however, you may choose to be notified by email when we receive this camera in stock by selecting the Notify when in stock option on the product page.
