Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 Super Wide Heliar III ... Overview

Affording an expansive field of view, the Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical III Lens from Voigtlander is dedicated to full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, and features an updated Heliar design to limit distortion and maintain consistent illumination to suit mirrorless camera designs. One aspherical element is also used in the 11 elements, 9 groups design, and helps to reduce spherical aberrations throughout the aperture range. The manual focus design affords fine-tuned control over focus placement, along with a minimum focusing distance of 11.8", and a Selective Aperture Control System allows you to de-click the manual aperture ring for smooth, silent exposure adjustment to benefit filmmaking applications.

Incredibly wide 15mm focal length lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 110° angle of view. It is also compatible with APS-C models where it will produce a 22.5mm equivalent focal length.
Updated Heliar optical design helps to maintain consistent peripheral illumination, eliminate color fringing, and reduce distortion; making it ideal for use with mirrorless digital cameras.
One aspherical element is featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations and improve clarity, sharpness, and resolution.
Manual focus design permits smooth, refined control along with a minimum focusing distance of 11.8".
Selective Aperture Control System produces a stepless, de-clicked aperture ring, which provides silent and smooth exposure adjustment that is well-suited for video application. The aperture ring can also be configured to utilize traditional 1/3-stop clicks for more intuitive tactile control over exposure settings.
Ten-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth quality of bokeh.
Built-in lens hood guards the front lens element and also helps to control lens flare and ghosting.
Contacts transfer all Exif data between the camera and lens in order to permit full use of camera functions, including focus magnification, image stabilization, and lens corrections.

Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 Super Wide Heliar III ... Reviews

Looks good, with minimal distortion!

Wonderful lens that is simple, sturdy, and has a clean look. Focusing is good, crisp, and the distortion for this 15mm isn't bad. What you get when too close to a building (10-15 ft away) is typical of wide lenses, just the nature of the beast, but is easily corrected in Photoshop. The issue we often deal with regarding wide lenses is their crooked look when too close, which this lens delivers as expected. With a Sony at least, when you adjust your f-stop the lens communicates to the camera monitor the stop number, so you don't even have to look at the lens. So far, it's delivered a great display of what it can do.

Sharp, intuitive, and fun to use

First the compact size makes it an easy, and enjoyable lens to carry around. And, despite the wide angle, distortion is very manageable and easy to correct. So, I found myself using it exclusively for a couple of weeks for a wide variety of pictures, from family and kid portraits to panoramas. It is very sharp, and the aperture, and focus rings are as far from each other as possible given the compact nature of the lens; and best of all, in the right order! That is, the wider, focus ring is closer to the camera body; and that is ideal for me for a good grip, before shooting.

Outstanding!

Do yourself a favor and look past the fact that this is manual focus. Honestly, it is that good. Sharp (right into the corners), Very low distortion, small, takes 58mm filters, very well built (like all Voigtlander's) and a bargain for the price. It is easy to want the latest & greatest with fast AF. But honestly, with a lest this wide the lack of AF is not an issue. There is no doubt in my mind this lens performs better than the f/2.8 zooms that cost three or four times more. Remember, F/8 and be there! and you will never need to worry about focusing.

Love this small, lightweight lens. It is sharp edge to edge. MF is a snap. Great addition to my Sony FE lens lineup.

I wanted a hyper wide angle to have that capability in my bag. I'm pretty impressed so far! Sharp and contrasty. Need to play with it some more.

First a big shout out to B&H for their personal recommendation! I wanted a wide angle lens that can accept widely available screw-on filters. I'm very comfortable setting f-stop manually (I set all exposure settings manually during my 13 years as a full-time wedding photographer). I didn't want to add money to a zoom feature. I wanted 15mm or wider. I wanted every penny to go to image fidelity. So, here we are with a lens that is engineered in Germany and manufactured in Japan. I shouldn't be shocked at how good the images are, but they are fantastic! Also, an unexpected benefit -- it is FUN. It's fun to touch and look at. It's fun setting the f-stop on a ring and focusing with the depth of field scale engraved next to it. Since it's wide angle, the manual focus on my Sony a7 whatever is a non-issue: I set the focus ring to the available depth of field and forget it. It's relatively small. It's not a dust-sucker. It feels very strong and turning the focus ring and f-stop are silent with no sliding sounds. Oh yeah, almost forgot, the sharpness and colors of the images are beautiful, gorgeous. I think this lens is my favorite lens of the last 20 or 30 years? It's like my favorite meal at a restaurant -- I have other great lenses but I always choose this one when I head outside! Whoever is involved with the design and manufacture of this lens must take a lot of pride in their work. Many thanks to them. Cons? If I'm being picky, then there's a bit of gentle vignette on the corners, but easily corrected with photo editing software. People who rely heavily on their camera's P setting might not fully appreciate the intrinsic value of this lens? Well, that's it. Hope this helps.

I just carried this through Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks. It's a great lens and is easy to use. The lack of autofocus is not an issue as you're at infinity for nearly every picture with this focal length (at least I was). It's a bit heavier than I expected but I really have enjoyed having this in my bag. Images are sharp and the focal length was great in the desert.

Anyone know how this compares to the Venus Optics ...

Anyone know how this compares to the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens, aside form the f2 vs f4.5.?
Asked by: Alfred
I don't have a Laowa 15mm. I don't do astro-photography, so an f/2.0 aperture isn't important to me. I shoot architecture so I'm more interested in depth of field. The Voigtlander 15mm and the 12mm lenses at perhaps the best wide angle lenses I have ever owned. Virtually no lens flare, sharp corner to corner, exceptional resolution, set them at f/5.6 or f/8...focus to 2-meters and shoot away... Outstanding results.

question

Does this have a filter thread?
Asked by: Mark C.
Yes; the Voigtlander Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical III Lens for Sony E has 58mm front filter threads. If possible, a thin or slim filter would be recommended of use with the lens due to its wide focal length.
