Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 Super Wide Heliar III ... Overview

Affording an expansive field of view, the Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical III Lens from Voigtlander is dedicated to full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, and features an updated Heliar design to limit distortion and maintain consistent illumination to suit mirrorless camera designs. One aspherical element is also used in the 11 elements, 9 groups design, and helps to reduce spherical aberrations throughout the aperture range. The manual focus design affords fine-tuned control over focus placement, along with a minimum focusing distance of 11.8", and a Selective Aperture Control System allows you to de-click the manual aperture ring for smooth, silent exposure adjustment to benefit filmmaking applications.

Incredibly wide 15mm focal length lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 110° angle of view. It is also compatible with APS-C models where it will produce a 22.5mm equivalent focal length.
Updated Heliar optical design helps to maintain consistent peripheral illumination, eliminate color fringing, and reduce distortion; making it ideal for use with mirrorless digital cameras.
One aspherical element is featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations and improve clarity, sharpness, and resolution.
Manual focus design permits smooth, refined control along with a minimum focusing distance of 11.8".
Selective Aperture Control System produces a stepless, de-clicked aperture ring, which provides silent and smooth exposure adjustment that is well-suited for video application. The aperture ring can also be configured to utilize traditional 1/3-stop clicks for more intuitive tactile control over exposure settings.
Ten-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth quality of bokeh.
Built-in lens hood guards the front lens element and also helps to control lens flare and ghosting.
Contacts transfer all Exif data between the camera and lens in order to permit full use of camera functions, including focus magnification, image stabilization, and lens corrections.

Anyone know how this compares to the Venus Optics ...

Anyone know how this compares to the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens, aside form the f2 vs f4.5.?
Asked by: Alfred
I don't have a Laowa 15mm. I don't do astro-photography, so an f/2.0 aperture isn't important to me. I shoot architecture so I'm more interested in depth of field. The Voigtlander 15mm and the 12mm lenses at perhaps the best wide angle lenses I have ever owned. Virtually no lens flare, sharp corner to corner, exceptional resolution, set them at f/5.6 or f/8...focus to 2-meters and shoot away... Outstanding results.

question

Did anybody use it for astrophotography? How are the edges? Comma?
Asked by: amr e.
a good choice, I have been using this lens for astrophotography on my Sony a6000 (APS-C) and I have been very pleased with Milkyway shots at ISO12,800, f/4.5, and 20 seconds. I did consider the Rokinon 14 mm as it is cheaper and faster - but it is also longer and heavier. You also get a nice 10-point flair when a bright light is shining towards the lens

question

Has anyone tried this lens on the Leica CL or Leica T with an adapter? I know certain lenses cannot be used on this camera because they protrude internally and touch the sensor
Asked by: Sergio
Unfortunately, you cannot attach a Sony E mount lens to a Leica L mount camera. However you can get this lens and adapter and that will do the trick. Voigtlander Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical III Lens B&H # VO1545V3. Leica M-Adapter L (Black) B&H # LEMATB.

question

will this lens work with a larger filter and a step up? It looks like the lens hood prevents any filters other than a 58mm.
Asked by: James M.
NiSi has the filter holder you need. It holds 150mm (6) square filters. It may be the only solution, and it is the one I use. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1332363-REG/nisi_nip_fh150_vl10_150mm_filter_holder_for.html?ap=y&gclid=CjwKCAjwmufZBRBJEiwAPJ3LpgL4CMGY-gU5umUEntuFZGyX69AiEMxD6MmZMqNkg1Qt-ZXBe6-OpRoCX7AQAvD_BwE&smp=y

question

Does the lens on the Sony A7rii have auto (stop down) aperture?
Asked by: Michael
No, it's a manual aperture and focus. It does communicate with the camera so you see what your aperture setting is in the viewfinder.
