Dracast LED1000 overview

  • 1Description

Taking the standard panel and slimming it down, Dracast has developed the LED1000 Silver Series Foldable Bi-Color LED Light to be a powerful and portable fixture ideal for run-and-gun shooting. This model specifically takes things up a notch with a folding design, making it more compact for storage and travel. In terms of light output, the LED1000 Silver is quite capable with 1000 LEDs rated with a CRI of >95. It also sports a 45° beam angle and has a physical dial on the back permitting dimming from 0-100%.

For maximum durability the panel has an aluminum chassis and it comes with a center mount yoke for control over light placement. The light itself also measures just 9.1 x 7.8 x 1.4" when folded and opens up to 9.1 x 15.7 x 0.7" for a broad, soft light source. It can run on either 100-240 VAC power via the included adapter or a 14.8 VDC battery pack on the V-mount plate. It draws just 58W and comes with a carrying case.

    Dracast LED1000 reviews

LED1000 Silver Series Foldable Bi-Color LED Light is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 65.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from These are okay half off. On sale these are cheap lights to use for fill or specialty situations. The temperature and dimming controls are counter intuitive and they don't dim from 0% - 100%, more like 25% - 100%. The dials should be for temperature and output not the output of each temperature. The lollipop style mount in the back can't go at a 90 degree angle. Annoying if you want to light from overhead (tabletop shoot). The foldable aspect is great for keeping it compact but it doesn't work with the barndoors (which don't even fit in the carrying case). One light had dead LEDs out of the box! If I can exchange it, I'd give it 3/5 stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great light!! Just be aware of a few things before buying. Overall, really nice light; just be aware of a few minor things, depending on your preferences. Pros: Great color/CRI Foldable Highly portable Unique goose-neck mount. Feels quality and gets bright Cons: Light only dimmable from 100% to around 20% or so; goes from 20% to off (unfortunately not 100%-0 like the ad says). Lack of screen to see what daylight/tungsten K you're at; have to manually just keep turning knobs and use a light meter or something else to check it. No softbox (as of July 9, 2016; but that might change soon/in the future, not sure). Head goes ALMOST 360 degrees (see attached pictures on my review)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not ready for professional use! Had high hopes for this LED panel as a small, convenient quick setup production light but it was nothing but a large disappointment. The panel produces a decent light output for its size but the dimmer & color temp controls are not independent of each other so one adjustment effects the other when turning a knob and the output is always changing when adjusting temp. This biggest problem is the mounting ball arm is poorly designed and will not tighten up enough to hold the light in a horizontal position with a 130 or 160W battery. The tightening arm easily stripped and Draco had to overnight me another one but because of the poor design it would easily strip again with little force. Customer service was great & I voiced my concerns to have this LED go back to the drawing board.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Impressed This light is almost as bright as a Kino Flo 4 Bank. That's saying something when it's a Bi-Color. I own Dracasts LED 1000 and I can safely if I have to choose between carrying this and that, I'll probably opt to take this. I use an A7S and this will be plenty of light for my interviews and music videos. The build quality is beautiful for such a small light. It's super small and it's like carrying around a small laptop. The only thing that isn't there is the Kelvin read out, so if you're looking for accuracy you'll have to use a light meter. However, for this price and the additonal features I think it's defintely worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little light These are cool. Pretty bright. They are an odd size though and will require some modification to any gels or diff you might want to use. I did find the dinner knobs to be a little less accurate than I was hoping, as you can turn the knob a couple of percentage points (if you know what i mean, 10%, 20%, 30% etc) without any change in the light level or colour temp. If you were trying to fine tune your level with an assistant and asked them to wind it up 10% they really wouldnt have much reference to that level. It would have been cool to have a clock face style marking on the dials so you can make reference but those references wouldnt be helpful if they dont really change the output accurately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little lights, SUPER portable I have the older LED1000s, and these are basically the same in terms of power output, but they fold up to become SUPER small and portable. I'm blown away at how lightweight these are and how small they fold up, it's crazy. Smaller and lighter than the old LED500 when packed away. The disadvantage is that it's not as easy to use accessories like barn doors or stuff with them, because of the folding design, but for lightweight, high output lights these are fantastic. It's a trade-off, but if light and portable and high quality bi-color light is what you need, don't hesitate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very cool light! I saw this Dracast silver light at a show a few weeks ago and I knew I just had to have this sleek looking light! Having used and owned a couple of Dracast panels in the past, I had high expectations that this would be worth it. This is slimmer than a conventional panel and yet surprisingly sturdy and well made. The light is super bright and the neat thing is you can position it virtually every which way for the perfect shooting angle. Terrific light!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sadly I have to break from the pack here on the Dracast. I have one other Dracast light and it has a few strengths and a couple of significant weaknesses which put it clearly into a prosumer camp of light gear. The silver series is clearly a move into a more considered design for a professional. In short it fails to achieve this which is sad since this is not an inexpensive light. A few of the positives, great output and decent color. I am still not convinced that any LED light compares to tungsten or HMI, but LED's are far superior in heat, weight and power usage. The negatives: The dimming circuit is not much of a dimming circuit. This is particularly a problem because it is a color variable light. Each collection of color LEDs has its own dimming circuit. Which struck me as odd, then I noticed a even bigger issue. If you want to for instance dial in a little warmth into the daylight LEDs the Tungsten LEDS immediately jump on at around 50%. Because of this it makes it difficult to be subtle with this light's color. This Light has a folding design that greatly interested me. The light does fold up small and is quite well protected when its stored this way. The problem is that when you unfold the light your hands need to grab the light over the LEDs putting pressure on them. I can see this easily damaging the LEDs and am quite wary of there being no other way to grab the light and unfold it. Even if you train yourself to be extra careful and delicately unfold the light, it would be difficult to expect those that are in your crew will be as careful. Another design flaw is the bracket to secure the supplied diffusion panel into place. The bracket easy comes out of place and the panel then slips out of the holder. Yet another negative is the ratcheting knob for tying down the light after pointing it is extremely weak and immediately was stripped the first time I used the light. The ball and socket seem very robust, but the knob is not. This and the dimming circuit are the biggest design flaws.
